$1 MILLION HASKELL STAKES AT MONMOUTH

The Lead:
The first of the summer "majors" for the Triple Crown alumni comes up with the Grade 1 Haskell. That will be followed by the Travers in August and the Pennsylvania Derby in September among the Grade 1 dirt routes. Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner Golden Tempo awaits a date at the Spa, while several of the prime Preakness players are back to match up in the Haskell.

The 1-1/8 miles race will be part of the $5,000 Hit & Split promotion for Saturday's card at Monmouth. Bet the late pick 4 or pick 5 with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet and earn your share of bonus cash.

Field Depth:
Grade 1 winners include NAPOLEON SOLO and FURTHER ADO. Both THE PUMA and IRON HONORS are Grade 3 winners and Grade 1-placed. OCELLI also is Grade 1-placed. Those 5 all match up pretty evenly in terms of strength of schedule, perhaps FURTHER ADO was an edge, albeit not wide.

Pace:
NAPOLEON SOLO under Paco Lopez likely will be the aggressor and set the tempo. Horses like FURTHER ADO could line up next along with longshots BABY VINO and STAR SWEEPER. The tempo does not look to overcook on paper. Closers could need some help on a historically fast strip.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

1-STAR SWEEPER: Longshot looks to be in a no-lead, no-pass situation and overmatched against superior talent. He’s 0-7 in stakes and both wins in 9 starts came at 6-1/2 furlongs.

2-FURTHER ADO: Decent bounce-back win in the Matt Winn Stakes for the Kentucky Derby beaten favorite. But it was a far cry from his impressive Keeneland performances. Trainer Brad Cox continued sharpening the knife with fast works in early July at home at Churchill. Monmouth surface may benefit him the faster and tighter they make it, which can often be the case on Haskell Day. Hard to argue with 5: 4-1-0 record when Irad Ortiz Jr. rides. Obvious contender, but likely an underlay price at below 2-1, which are my fair odds.

3-BABY VINO: Progressive sort has improved in every start and exits a career-best victory in the Pegasus over this track. Wildcard needs another big leap forward against this level of competition and not sure the damside pedigree gives him enough punch to win over 1-1/8 miles against this bunch.

4-THE PUMA: The field’s best finisher hasn’t raced since the Florida Derby in late March, but was in training through the Kentucky Derby when an eleventh-hour scratch. Missed a month on workout tab thereafter but has 6, perfectly spaced drills with this target in mind all summer. Gustavo Delgado trainee got stronger deeper into his form cycle this winter/spring and loses regular rider Javier Castellano to injury. Replacement pilot Luis Saez may not be the perfect style fit for a finisher like this. Still, probably the one to fear late and wouldn’t surprise me to win.

5-IRON HONOR: Preakness runner-up already has seen the middle jewel’s third-place finisher Chip Honcho return to win the Ohio Derby. That he remained at Belmont and didn’t go with the A-team to the Spa in recent months indicates that’ve had their eye on this Jersey Shore prize for some time. Some concern over 9F that if he stays closer to the pace – like he did in the Wood vs. the Preakness – that he won’t have enough late firepower. Monmouth isn’t the kind of track on Haskell Day where patience is rewarded. Mixed vibes.

6-NAPOLEON SOLO: The horse to beat exits a Preakness score that re-wrote his future forecast. He wiped away tiring losses in the Fountain of Youth and Wood Memorial and carried his winning stamina around 2 turns for the first time. The Haskell long has looked at his best chance at a major in the sophomore ranks – and he, frankly, got there sooner at Laurel. Jockey Paco Lopez for all his glaring flaws has been winning at an unfathomable 46% rate this meeting and he’s a speed jockey on a clear speed horse – vs. a field largely made up of horses who’d rather chase from second or third. Catch him to win.

7-OCELLI: Deep closer remains a maiden through 9 starts and does enough most times to tease you along for another chance. The Haskell typically doesn’t fall apart to a horse from the clouds like this amd the quality runners in this field all have a major tactical edge on him. This surface might play closer to Colonial from his Viriginia Derby effort, which was not one of his best. Not for me today.

Most Likely Exotics Contender:
Lopez is nearly 75% in the money at the meet and his style and pace situation fit NAPOLEON SOLO quite well, despite the horse's up-and-down campaign in 2026.

Best Longshot Contender:
None projected. Top-4 wagering choices look dialed into the exacta, and likely trifecta.

Over the next 9 weeks, horseplayers at Xpressbet can test their skills on the summer’s 2 hottest meets – Saratoga and Del Mar. The annual Fun in the Sun handicapping contest runs 8 Saturdays from July 18-September 5 and concludes with the $10,000-added Final Table on Labor Day Monday, September 7.

Entry is just $25 each qualifying round week and players utilize a $100 live bankroll on the final 5 races from Saratoga and first 5 races from Del Mar ($10 parimutuel win bets in each of the contest races). Scott Shapiro: Saratoga Spot Plays

A big day of racing throughout the land not only includes the first Saturday of the Del Mar summer meeting, as well as Haskell Day at Monmouth Park, but of course another big weekend afternoon at Saratoga Race Course. The 12-race card in Saratoga Springs, NY kicks off at 12:35 PM eastern with a strong MSW event for 2YOS and is headlined by the Diana (G1) for older fillies and mares. Here are a few horses I like most on the Saturday afternoon Saratoga slate.

Race 1:
The opener marks the debut of highly regarded juvenile #4 Powerline. The son of Flightline commanded $1.8M at the FTS August ’25 sale and comes in off a strong series of drills in Kentucky before a pair of breezes over the Saratoga main track. The Steve Asmussen barn is off to a strong start to the summer at the Spa and this guy looks like the real deal. That said, I will take the experience edge with #7 Greenwell. The fellow Flightline colt was well-meant on debut going off at even-money against a live field of MSW foes at Churchill Downs in mid-June. He was beaten out of the gate that day and in a bit tight on the backstretch before holding on barely to earn second. The winner won in gate-to-wire fashion for trainer Jimmy DiVito that day in Louisville with third place finisher Midnight Still coming back to win going away earlier this meet at the Spa. The experience edge and added furlong make the $500k Keeneland September ’25 purchase by top choice in the opener.

Play: #7 Greenwell (2-1 ML)

Race 5: Diana (G1)
The featured event for the day is for fillies and mares at 1 1/8-miles over the Inner Turf and if you are just waking up from a long nap you might not know that trainer Chad Brown has dominated this race over the years. Brown has won the last four, including last year with Excellent Truth and has captured the Grade 1 event a record ten times. Brown has a huge chance to defend his title since he has four entered this year, including the three ML favorites. I landed on 2-1-ML favorite #3 Kathynmarissa. The American Pharoah mare was caught four-wide into the first turn and was never able to save ground in her third-place finish in the New York (G3) last month. The inside draw and slight cutback should benefit her, as well as the fact she retains her elite regular rider, while the other Brown trainees will be using replacements for those riding the Haskell Day card at Monmouth Park. The stage is set for the former Richard Dutrow trainee to earn her first Grade 1 win later today.

Play: #3 Kathynmarissa (2-1 ML)

Race 9:
My final play of the day in New York comes in this MSW event for 3YOs+ at 7-furlongs over the main track where I like second-time starter #9 Gadget Play quite a bit. The son of Into Mischief debuted at Churchill Downs in late May for trainer Al Stall, Jr. in an 11-horse MSW race that was dominated by those prominently placed in the early stages. The track appeared to favor speed that day and eventual winner McCann used it to his advantage with a narrow victory over Bob Baffert conditioned Campobasso. Gadget Play was never a factor on the win end, but was the only off-the-pace runner to put in a late run. Stall has always been trustworthy when shipping runners into Saratoga and that has continued over time evidenced by his $2.15 ROI over the last five years with his horses competing at the Spa. I expect a big move forward from the Spendthrift Farm homebred in career start #2.

Al Cimaglia: Scioto Downs Spot Plays

Scioto Downs has a big 17-race program with Ohio Bred action throughout the card. The headliners are four $100,000 Stakes carded in Race 11-Race 14. The Spot Plays are in Race 12, Race 13, and Race 14. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 12 (10:00 PM EDT)

1-Godusa (5-1)-Does break stride at times and that is the risk. Did go the back half in 55.3 but the slow .58 opening half hurt and came a neck short. David Miller is at the controls and the last time he drove was on 5-2. Took command then after landing in the 2-hole and drew off versus this kind. Should be racing near the top of the stack again and is main threat if minds its manners.

1-Playing #1 Godusa in a Win Bet

1-4-2

Race 13 (10:20 PM EDT)

1-Always B Naughty (8-1)-Going to swing for a price as the Todd Luther pupil ships back from M1 and never got rolling in the 2 races there. Does very good work on the ScD oval (18-6-3-3) and can benefit from the inside draw. Usual pilot Austin Hanners is in the bike, and this mare could benefit from a pair of familiar hands. Should be no worse than in the pocket around the opening turn. At the morning line price this feels like a live long shot and will look for a top effort.

Race 14 (10:45 PM EDT)

4-Lou Hill (9/2)-Comes off a sharp win in the Haughton Final and was helped by a quick pace plus a perfect steer by Yannick Gingras. The versatile Per Engblom trainee does good work on this oval (8-4-1-2). Hasn't faced this heavy of a field at ScD but will start from the 2nd best post. Gingras will be aggressive and there is other early speed in this affair. Lou is sharp and doesn't have to lead every step of the way to take a picture. Not sure the morning line price holds up but should offer a nice return and could double up with another big try.

Del Mar has more than $80,000 in the pick 6 carryover today. We'll look to build off a $28.20 top-pick return on $20 in plays from opening day, where favorites went just 1-for-10. Saturday’s card co-features the San Diego Handicap in Race 8 and the San Clemente in Race 9. The former includes Journalism in his likely prep to the Pacific Classic, a race in which he finished second a year ago during his sophomore campaign.

The Day 2 program has a first post is 5 pm ET / 2 pm PT. Each day this summer at Del Mar, I’ll be handicapping the action with my top plays on the card – including full-card selections for a featured program each week.

Del Mar: Race 1 | 5:00 pm ET
#2 Gypsy Tears (6-1 morning line odds) has won 2 of his last 4 local starts and her return try in June at Los Alamitos can be forgiven as he has nearly never raced off a layoff in his busy, 31-race career. Veteran pairs beautifully with Tyler Baze (3 wins, 1 second in last 7 team efforts) and reunites with his favorite pilot. Sire Gem Heist has a fantastic $2.47 ROI for every $1 bet with his Del Mar dirt starters the last 5 years. Giving away some class here, so demand the morning line price or higher. Picks 2-3-5.

Del Mar: Race 2 | 5:32 pm ET
#7 Princess Luna (10-1 morning line odds) was heavily backed in her Los Alamitos debut third and catches a field lacking power barns in this Cal-bred maiden. Los Al form and poor speed figure might be questionable, but she’s by Cairo Prince, whose offspring have a $1.11 ROI for every $1 bet with 19% winners at Del Mar on dirt the past 5 years. Picks 7-6-2.

Del Mar: Race 9 | 9:10 pm ET | San Clemente Stakes
#5 Peanutbutterbombe (8-1 morning line odds) has been given plenty of time between starts and shows up in her first graded stakes for a potent team of Phil D’Amato and Antonio Fresu. Her Santa Anita form has been good in all 4 starts, but note sire Collected’s offspring win a ridiculous 29% on the Del Mar lawn in recent years with a $1.30% ROI for every $1 bet - and added another in Friday's finale. Expect a move up on this course. Should be in the mix throughout in a race without a huge finisher in the lineup #6 Light Won Up (10-1 ML) may also move up on this course and worth price inclusion. Picks 5-6-4

Del Mar: Race 11 | 10:10 pm ET
#3 Conquer We Must (4-1 morning line odds) put it together late in his turf sprint debut at Santa Anita and should be primed to mile here for a Simon Callaghan barn that annually aims for early Del Mar success. His $5.15 ROI for every $1 bet is off the charts at Del Mar during July the past several seasons with 7-18 in the exacta, coming into the weekend. Plus, this colt’s sire Starspangledbanner is a very strong 21% winner and nearly break-even ROI with all his Del Mar turf performers. Picks 3-8-5.

Del Mar - Race #8

#6 Full Serrano	Think he's the most reasonable alternative to the chalk, but you've got to hope he finds a way back to some of that form from last year or earlier, as the two starts this year haven't been anything to write home about.
#5 Journalism	He might roll these as he finally gets away from some of the toughest customers in the entire game, but I think the top choice a somewhat comparable ceiling and can get the jump on him.
#3 Shea Brennan	Obviously a tougher test here today in graded company for the Cal-bred, but the comeback run was pretty sharp and might set him up for something better in the second start off the bench. Think he can share.
Race Summary	Journalism is probably going to be tough in here after running into the best in the country over the last year, but I wonder if Full Serrano can rediscover some of his better form -- a couple of super-snappy recent works say maybe.

Del Mar - Race #9

#3 Ground Support	Kind of a mild comeback run, but I'm willing to give her another chance to show she moved forward off the sharp 2-year-old form, as something like her Breeders' Cup effort over this course last fall would probably leave the rest running for second.
#1 Raiding Party	She gets her class test, but she does so with some pretty solid Kentucky form through three starts and the talent to be competitive in this spot. Wouldn't argue that hard with you if you landed here.
#9 Lookin At Diamond	Finisher looked good graduating back in May and turned in an OK finishing effort in the first stakes try, and she may still have some upside with just the three starts under her belt.
Race Summary	Ground Support is obviously capable of something better than she showed in the layoff run last out, but that was a decent enough group overall, and it should set her up for better with that race under her belt.

Del Mar - Race #11

#6 Koekkoek	Pretty tame run last out at 9/5, but the price might be a touch more appealing today as he looks to bounce back with a couple of prior efforts on his page that would make him a handful here.
#4 Yep	His form has been pretty reliable so far, and he brings what feels like a pretty steady series of works with him to this first American start. Dangerous.
#3 Conquer We Must	He kicked home well in the debut run going short, and that is a logical way to set him up for this first run around two turns. Reasonable upside keeps him in the picture.
Race Summary	Koekkoek didn't really pick up last time out, but he's the one to beat today if he gets back to either of the races before that one. Lots to like today.

#2 VERRAZANO FIRST (9-2)	Lightly-raced 9-year-old has tactical speed and loves to win.
Race Summary	VIA DEL CORSO ranged up while off the rail on a muddy track, then took over in the lane for his first win at 6F. He carries high weight of 126 pounds again, looking to build on a 5-for-14 record. Bet to win and place and play 3-2 and 3-7 exactas.

Fairmount Park - Race #4

#1 RED SPEEDO (5-2)	Seeks return to early-season form, had excuses in last two starts, get in light.
#8 RECAUSE (9-5)	Rallied for 1-2-3 finishes recently, also entered in $10k route race Tuesday.
#4 HEAVENS HOUND (15-1)	In good form cycle, takes class hike off the claim, price attached.
Race Summary	RED SPEEDO can be excused for a bobbled start against better last out and a late rally into a slow pace two starts ago when he finished behind the two favorites. He won back-to-back sprints on a ‘good’ strip here in the Spring and can do it again today. Bet to win and place and play 1-4, 1-8 and 8-1 exactas.

Fairmount Park - Race #8

#2 OUR JUJU (4-1)	Troubled debut, drops out of faster follow-up, today’s Best Bet.
#8 BELLEINTHETEMPLE (6-1)	Hit board behind pair of next-out winners and 3-1 pace setter in latest.
#7 ELSIE’S LEGACY (3-1)	Seeks duplicate of race two starts ago, gets new pilot.
Race Summary	OUR JUJU earned the top recent speed figure in the field when she finished a troubled third in MSW company two starts ago. She took money but was no factor in a follow-up try but the 6F sprint stacked up comparably at all points of call with a $20,000 optional claiming race on the same card. Bet to win and place and play a 2/7, 8/ALL trifecta.

The average class figure alone makes this one a solid contender. RYLNNSLOOKINGLUCKY - This filly is a solid choice based on her earnings per start in turf route races. Looks like a formidable contender for the exotics. ROBERTA - Has been running quite well in races of this distance, going 1 out of 4 under similar conditions.

MARCO IN THE SKY - Looks to beat this group if you believe at all in pedigree - big sire progeny edge having Jimmy Creed as this colt's father. Fits in well here based on Reavis's strong results with 2 year olds recently. GAIL'S GLORY - Has to be given a shot as Reavis has been among the most respectable trainers with two-year olds.

HELLO FRANKIE - When Birzer and Hicklin combine forces on animals the return on investment has been wonderful at +27. I am keen on that most recent effort on June 20th at Prairie Meadows where he ended up first. CACTUS LEAGUE - Last time out, finished fifth on an off track at Prairie Meadows. Have to give a better effort in today's race. The recent bullet 100.4 work should put this gelding on track for today's contest. After a nice race two starts ago, this horse bounced. Now today, I expect another good performance. KEARNEY STREET - This colt is in top physical condition right now. Ended up second last out and comes back rapidly. Carrying 6 pounds less this race. Trainer has him in a good spot.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 TUFF BIZ (ML=5/2), #3 CROOKED AS CAN BE (ML=9/2), #6 TOUGH TOMMY (ML=6/1),

TUFF BIZ - 5/2 is just too low of a price to take on this entrant. CROOKED AS CAN BE - While Equibase's speed ratings are solid, I would disregard the high one from the June 13th on an off track. Some horses just run well on the off going. TOUGH TOMMY - The lack of drills has to make one concerned despite the good effort in the last race.
