    Scott Shapiro: Saratoga Spot Plays

    July 19, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

The racing week at Saratoga Race Course concludes on Sunday afternoon with a ten-race card that commences at 1:10 PM eastern. The slate is headlined by the $225k Quick Call, a 5.5-furlong turf sprint for 3YOs, which goes as Race 9. Here are a few horses I like most on the final card of the third week of racing this summer in New York.

    Race 5:
This state-bred MSW event at two-turns over the grass kicks off the Pick 6. #3 Amazing Gracer has had five chances already, but is likely to be sitting on a career best in her third start off the long layoff. The Yezzi Thoroughbreds homebred made her 4YO debut on May 8 at Aqueduct where she was beaten out of the gate, which led later to a wide middle move before tiring in the final furlong. In her most recent start last month, the trip was even worse. Jockey Jaime Rodriguez opted to make a four-wide move before she reached the far turn making it nearly impossible to sustain her energy to the wire. The Tapwrit filly thankfully gets an inside draw and a rider upgrade to Manny Franco. Both should aid her in putting forth a career best performance, which should be good enough to earn her first lifetime win.

Play: #3 Amazing Gracer (4-1 ML)
    Picks: 3-6-1

    Race 7:
There is unlikely to be an honest pace in this second-level allowance at 1 3/8-miles over the Inner Turf, which should benefit those along the inside with some semblance of early zip. #1 Silvology is far from a speed ball, but at the same time jockey Dylan Davis should be able to find a comfortable mid-pack spot along the rail. The Blame mare shook off the rust last month at Aqueduct in a 1 1/16-mile affair after being on the sidelines for 13 months. She has shown the ability to finish at this distance and should be set for a big run after being in a race far too sharp for her at Aqueduct. Hopefully, she brings Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey his first win of the summer in Saratoga.

    Play: #1 Silvology (5-1 ML)
    Picks: 1-3-7

    Race 9: Quick Call
The final stakes race of the week in New York is this 5.5-furlong turf dash for 3YOs where 9-5-ML favorite Cy Fair will be scratched after dominating a field of her own gender yesterday. This opens this race up for trainer George Weaver’s other entrant #10 Johnny’s Red Storm. The son of Twirling Candy won in dominant fashion over this course on August 3 before banking a huge payday with his win in the Juvenile Sprint at Kentucky Downs. He has not raced since, but comes in off a steady series of drills with several on the grass and attracts Flavien Prat. He will not be his 5-1-ML price unless he is dead on the board, but is in a good spot to make it a perfect 3 for 3 to begin his career.

    Play: #10 Johnny’s Red Storm (5-1 ML)
    Picks: 10-3-4

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Spot Plays

      July 19, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

Northfield Park has a 15-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool starts in Race 11. The Spot Plays are in Race 3, Race 11, and Race 12. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 3 (6:44 PM EDT)

4-Fiftyfour K (9/2)-Needs to prove itself at this level but so does everyone in this field. The program chalk starts from the rail, and this veteran has good gate speed and could get the jump. Cashed a 4th place check at this level in last. Didn't get a smooth trip from post 9 and will look for another aggressive steer from Tyler Smith. Could be on the point after the wings fold, if not a pocket trip could work well too. Should offer a square price and may have met a beatable field.

      4-1-3

Using #4 Fiftyfour K to Win

      Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)

7-Stoke The Fire (8-1)-Went off at 1/9 and got an absolutely awful trip. Chris Lems wanted him on the point, and a well-meant long shot winner said no. That started the trouble, then landed 3rd on the rail but quickly came out of the hole as Dan Noble was grinding up. Its fate was then sealed as it was hung the rest of the mile and was game but faded to finish 4th. The post draw helps the price and will look for a different plan. Lems could improve position off the gate and then come off cover. Faces all 3-year-old this time and should offer a solid price. Has a solid Nfld record (10-4-0-1) and #4 Odds On Mace, the program chalk hasn't hit the board in 3 starts on this oval.

      7-6-4

Playing #7 Stoke The Fire to Win

      Race 12 (10:02 PM EDT)

3-Johnny Up (7-1)-Looking for a price and Johnny has enough gate speed to get the jump on others and end up on the engine. Bumps up here like others and if Kurt Sugg fires out and lands at the top of the stack good things could happen at a price. Was used hard from the 8-hole in last and was hung the mile after missing a start. Now, come backs in sequence and should get a much smoother journey.

      3-6-5

Playing #3 Johnny Up to Win

Jeremy Plonk: Del Mar Spot Plays | Sunday, July 19, 2026

        July 18, 2026 | By Jeremy Plonk

A heavy favorite in Journalism in the San Diego and some wild prices along the way made for a mostly fun Saturday at Del Mar. But we had a bout of second-itis in our key plays there as well as the Haskell that left a sour taste. Let's get over the hump today.

Each day this summer at Del Mar, I’ll be handicapping the action with my top plays on the card – including full-card selections for a featured program each week. Sunday’s card features the Wickerr Stakes for turf milers.

The Day 3 program has a first post is 5 pm ET / 2 pm PT.

Del Mar: Race 4 | 6:38 pm ET
#1 Disillusioned (12-1 morning line odds) debuts from the rail with speed jockey Ricky Gonzalez aboard for Michael McCarthy, whose barn won 3 races here opening day and added a stakes win on Saturday with Journalism. Bred to love Del Mar top and bottom, and while it’s not ideal to debut going a maiden claiming route, the favorites here are 0-11 lifetime and losers at 4-5 and 8-5 as chalk in their most recent starts (and have to give 5 pounds). Worth a look if public doesn’t smash McCarthy too low in price after his fast meet start. Picks 1-10-5-7.

Del Mar: Race 5 | 7:10 pm ET
#7 Melismatic (8-1 morning line odds) gets a juicy pace set-up in a race loaded with early speed. Sat patiently and pounced on the mile stretch-out at Santa Anita in May and a similar trip would be beneficial Sunday. Irish export by Space Blues, who won the Breeders’ Cup Mile over this Del Mar course and trip. Picks 7-4-3.

Del Mar: Race 6 | 7:40 pm ET
#2 Desert Kid (8-1 morning line odds) takes a mild class drop that could get him over the top after a series of respectable efforts. Looking for a perk up at Del Mar as sire Gato Del Oro offspring win a razor-sharp 27% with a $1.48 ROI for every $1 bet on this dirt surface in recent years. Sidelined immediately after only local bid last year so we’ll disregard that in hopes of landing a price. On same pedigree angle, don’t be shocked if #11 Audible Silence (20-1 ML) gets a share of the exotics as sire Audible is a wild 31% winner with his offspring here, though don’t prefer this one sprinting. Picks 2-6-1.

Del Mar: Race 9 | 9:10 pm ET
#1 Freedom’s Not Free (5-1 morning line odds) could not fit the conditions of the Wickerr Stakes any better and love the sprint-to-route, second-off-the-layoff form cycle employed here by Mark Glatt. Excellent Del Mar turf form last year and should employ rail speed under Antonio Fresu in a race where only Captain Choochies also looks intent on the front. Picks 1-5-8.

          #5
          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Del Mar - Race #5
#8 Caro Buono Some of the races on his page are a bit better than they look, as he found some trouble in a few of those starts, and he's getting out of stakes company for the first time since showing up from Europe last year. Still a playable price?
#3 Tiz All That He makes sense as the price gets a lot shorter today after the troubled run going short last time out, but he's also going to try two turns for the first time today with a pedigree that might lean a bit shorter.
#1 Sammy Davis He's got a bit of inside pace in a race with a couple other forward/pressing types, but his only two-turn try on the main was pretty solid, and he might stick around for a piece.
Race Summary Caro Buono has been in with better groups since her arrival here last year, and she has found trouble in some of those starts while not getting embarrassed on the wire. Think she'll get her win here.
          Del Mar - Race #7
#3 Mendezlebank The works feel forward enough to wonder if he might be able to land this right out of the box while offering an OK price. Check him out first on the tote and track.
#4 Lucky N Smart The worry is that he'll be along too late, but I think this sharper trip might work in his favor while turning back off the route run last out. Chance to pick them up.
#1 Proof He Goes Don't love the shift inside to the rail with another pace trip likely, but there actually isn't a ton of super-serious early burn on paper in here. Maybe he sneaks away at some point?
Race Summary Mendezlebank goes first time out in a race where I don't have a ton of enthusiasm for most of them who have run. Lucky N Smart is logical but doesn't really excite, while maybe Proof He Goes is the pace add in the multis.
          Del Mar - Race #9
#1 Freedom's Not Free Sharp rally from him to score going short off the bench, and he has run well going long several times in the past, so the move back around two turns isn't an issue with a versatile forward running style that is going to work in his favor in a race with a potentially murky race flow.
#2 Atitlan He's got a pretty reliable baseline run, and that puts him right in the picture again here, but it also sometimes leaves him vulnerable to running into a horse who just brings a better singular effort on any given day. Probably want him on the tickets.
#5 King of Gosford Dropper is probably supposed to hit hard here after a string of graded tries against horses like Formidable Man and Almendares, but I just think there are a couple of other competitive options at more appealing prices. Capable.
Race Summary Freedom's Not Free looked good in the 4-year-old debut last time out, and that run probably still leaves him some room to come forward while stretching out today -- he was second in a Grade II the last time he went long.

QUADRUPLE (GB) is the best bet in this contest especially at 12/1. There is a respectable chance that this entry's late pace will improve with second time Lasix. Has a strong shot in this race if you like back class. VINA ARANA (IRE) - Is tough not to look at based on speed figs which have been competitive - 94 avg - of late. Make a note that this horse runs on Lasix today. EQUITAS - Investors using horses with this jock and conditioner duo have done soundly recently.

                  #9 ZAMBEZI (ML=6/1)
                  #8 DIVE BOMBER (ML=6/1)

ZAMBEZI - Hazlewood should be able to place this gelding right behind the early speed. Ideally, Hazlewood will rate behind the leaders, then surge on the turn. You have to really like that last race fig, 103, which is the top last race fig of this field. DIVE BOMBER - I believe this equine isn't a natural sprinter. Routing is his best game and those last two sprints should have him set for a big run today. The jock and handler combination have a favorable return on investment when they combine forces. This animal didn't run well on a sloppy track in his last race at Churchill Downs. You may want to discount that effort. Coming off a fifth place finish at Churchill Downs, some may pass on this horse. I'm not. He just missed hitting the show spot, and has respectable M/L odds today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 SO SANDY (ML=2/1), #6 VAMOS CARLITOS (ML=9/2), #4 CLASSIC CAR WASH (ML=5/1),

SO SANDY - I usually try to beat these types of favorites off the long layoff. Earned a pedestrian speed rating in the last race in a $125,000 Optional Claiming race on Oct 24th. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that rating. VAMOS CARLITOS - Garnered a most unsatisfactory speed fig last time out in an $80,000 Optional Claiming race on June 27th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that fig. CLASSIC CAR WASH - Mediocre speed rating last out at Churchill Downs at 7 furlongs. Don't think this horse will improve too much in today's race.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - ZAMBEZI - This horse has the top TrackMaster Power Rating and is a longshot to boot. What's not to like?

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #9 ZAMBEZI to win if you can get at least 2/1 odds

                    Hawthorne - Race #3 - Post: 2:20pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,500 Class Rating: 64

                    Rating:

                    #3 R U JOKING (ML=4/1)
                    #4 GOGH (ML=3/1)
#5 DASH TO THE CASH (ML=6/1)

R U JOKING - As the only front-runner in the race, I expect this gelding to be long gone. Quinonez drops him down to this class. You don't need too much more handicapping information to think this animal should be one of the top contenders at this level. This gelding should be in fine condition, this far into his form cycle. You probably should discount that last race at Hawthorne on a muddy track where he finished outside the top 3. Should do well in today's race without the off-track conditions. GOGH - Don't throw this horse out due to his last affair at Fairmount Park where he finished sixth in the slop. I look for an improvement today. I usually like playing sprint horses who are 3-4 races into a come back. This equine collects a lot of money per race. Number one in this event. DASH TO THE CASH - The last time I saw this horse was at Hawthorne in a race with an Equibase class figure of 71. Dropping drastically in Equibase class figure this time out puts him in a solid position in today's race. Have to make this gelding a win candidate; he comes off a solid contest on Jun 21st.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #6 LOWER BROADWAY (ML=2/1), #1 STREET STYLE (ML=5/1), #2 BIG D (ML=6/1),

LOWER BROADWAY - This probable favorite hasn't been to the track in awhile. No workouts since last race. STREET STYLE - The speed ratings are going downward. I'm not betting this steed off of that trend. Tough for this closer horse to get up today. Without a hot pace to stir things up, the lone front speed is going to make it awfully hard to get the job done. BIG D - Tough to put any money on this gelding on the win end. Likes to finish in the money though. Don't believe this mount will do much running in today's race. That last speed figure was common when compared with today's class rating.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #3 R U JOKING on top if we're getting at least 3/1 odds

                      # 5 WEAREBACKYOUNGMAN 5/1
                      # 6 DEMOLITION 9/2
                      # 2 STICKY MCSHNICKENS 8/1
I like WEAREBACKYOUNGMAN here. Posted a strong speed figure last time out. This gelding obviously likes the distance, going 1 / 3 in his races lately. If you look closely, this horse has some longshot possibilities. DEMOLITION - Boasts reliable speed figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group. Make a note that this one runs with second time Lasix today. STICKY MCSHNICKENS - He has very good class ratings, averaging 92, and has to be carefully examined in this competition. He should be considered given the formidable speed figs.
