    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
#4 Warrior's Mission He's capable of something better than he showed last time out, and think he's going to offer another playable enough price with a potentially perfect kind of first-over trip waiting for him. Gets back to his best stuff today to score?
#7 Sealand This guy probably has the most committed pace, and for me that gives him the edge on the next guy who also figures to be right up in the picture throughout.
#1 Big Run At first glance, there's a chance he might drill this group while bringing more upside than the top pair, but I worry that the rail draw could force him to either hustle a bit to keep up or drop back and around. The one to beat, just wonder if the price gets short with some chance of a complicated trip waiting for him?
Race Summary Warrior's Mission was flat last out, but he rarely stays in dull form and can play with this group if he's able to get back to his baseline. Good news is the price will be fun, as the other listed pair handled him easily in that last one.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #2
#7 Veri Collected Very price-dependent top choice for -- I'll run for the hills if she gets bet, but I wonder if a few droppers in here might keep the price playable. I realize she's probably a trap, and I've fallen for it before with her both here and in Ohio, but I see her getting a really good trip at what might finally be a slightly overlooked price?
#4 I'll Stop Talking She was actually very flat in her only try against anything like this kind of company, but she has turned in a couple of OK runs along the way in special weight spots, including one on the synthetic at Turfway, suggesting she's tough here if she brings her baseline run.
#6 Shiva Parvati She has so far been lacking the final gear to punch home, but she also hasn't been quitting late in those starts with better, and she might stack up OK here if she likes the local footing.
Race Summary Veri Collected has a few races on her page that would keep her in the frame to land this, especially if I'll Stop Talking doesn't fire a good one. She's really out of excuses at this point, but I'm relying a lot on her gettting what I hope is a dreamy trip just like I aimed for in the opener tonight.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#1 Body By Carvel She finished up well in the local debut going short, and I wonder if she can translate that sprint run into a decent kind of run from off the pace going long in a spot with a handful of players who don't always punch home.
#5 Standpoint He's another with some hope to get the last laugh if the pace starts to come back, and he outran his price when trying this kind of company last out.
#8 Mackenzie's Nova Forward player has been plugging on OK in recent starts, but she has been giving away ground in the stretch call of the local races all season, and I think that leaves her open to getting picked up late again today by someone with some more enthusiasm late.
Race Summary Body By Carvel and Standpoint are the two I'll lean on in hopes that one of them can land this from off the pace, but the former should offer the better price with more questions to answer while stretching out here.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Penn National - Race #1
#2 MARCAN LOVE (6-1) In good form, finished in the money in 6 of last 7 long-distance tests.
#6 APOLLO ELEVEN (6-1) Worked bullets before repeat victories on dirt and turf, re-claimed by Stidham.
#3 WISH CAREFULLY (5-2) Finished on both sides of ‘photos’ in slow-paced routes, will be underlay.
Race Summary At 6-1 on the morning line, MARCAN LOVE offers the best value in an evenly-matched starter allowance. He improved with four consecutive 70-plus Beyers for this barn but got beat as the favorite last out. He ranged up alongside the winner nearing the final turn, dropped back, and re-bid to finish third. Bet to win and place and play 2-10 and 6-10 daily doubles.
      Penn National - Race #2
#10 MUCHO MOJO (7-2) Winless on turf, but last two tries were better than they appeared.
#7 HIGHLY POTENT (10-1) Seeks duplicate of one-mile turf test when he ran on short rest.
#1 ZAPATA (5-2) Rounding to another good race, draws rail in repeat try, added ground within reach.
Race Summary Have to like MUCHO MOJO at anywhere near his morning-line price despite drawing post 10 with an 0-for-10 turf record. He ranged up 3-wide near the quarter pole but flattened out in a 1-1/2-mile grass marathon won by Mo Rewards (8-39, $121k), who extended his winning streak to three recently. He also ran third behind multiple stakes-placed Franz Josef (8-44, $250k) in his prior turf start last Fall. Now he enters a 44-percent claim barn. Bet to win and place and play 10-1 and 10-7 exactas.
      Penn National - Race #7
#6 MARLAS DREAM (2-1) Been burning money despite ascending speed figs of late, cutback a plus.
#5 RUGGED SMILE (5-1) Contended this far in turf route, drops below claiming price for top barn.
#2 LOAF OF SOF (3-1) Late foot in Laurel sprint two back that produced class-rising winner.
Race Summary MARLAS DREAM dueled with the odds-on favorite, led at the 16th pole but missed in a photo finish at 6F. She can use her speed well in this field from a favorable post and reward her loyal backers. Bet to win and place and play 6-2 and 6-5 exactas.

            Penn National - Race #7 - Post: 8:39pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $16,000 Class Rating: 48

            Rating:

            #6 MARLAS DREAM (ML=2/1)

MARLAS DREAM - This filly ran well in her last race but just couldn't conquer the winner. Note that she was well ahead of the show horse, and looks like a major contender in this field. The Jul 7th event at Penn National was at a class level of (53). Dropping down the ladder based on class considerably, so she should be in a good position. Have to make this filly a solid contender; she comes off a solid outing on July 7th. This horse picks up a lot of dough per start. I believe she can add to that bankroll in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 LOAF OF SOF (ML=3/1), #1 WITTY GIRL (ML=4/1), #5 RUGGED SMILE (ML=5/1),

LOAF OF SOF - I'd like to see better recent efforts with oddsmaker's morning line of 3/1. Hasn't finished in the money in any short distance races of late. Doubtful to see her doing it this time either. Will not be easy for this racer to beat this bunch off of that last fig. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put her on the questionable contenders list. WITTY GIRL - This questionable contender will almost certainly be way back as this field crosses the wire. RUGGED SMILE - In any contest of 5 1/2 furlongs, I like to back a contender that has been looking good in short distance contests recently.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - MARLAS DREAM - Betting the animal with the best last race speed figure is a good angle. None higher than this filly's last one.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #6 MARLAS DREAM to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds

              # 3 GO WEST 3/1
MORE LOVE has a formidable shot to take this race. Has been right there on the wire most every time as of late. He has garnered very good numbers under today's conditions and will probably fare well against this group. With one of the strongest jockeys in terms of profits at the window, don't count this horse out. WAUHATCHIE - Has very good speed figs and has to be considered for a bet for this race. Players should note that this pony runs with second time Lasix today. GO WEST - This racer is in the upper half of this group of animals in earnings per start at the distance/surface. He has strong class ratings, averaging 93, and has to be given consideration in this contest.

                # 1 LEMON SOHN 9/5
                # 4 COPPERJACKET 2/1
MORE MONEY MO looks very good to best this field. Don't overlook this gelding in your wagers - very dangerous with Roman aboard. With a solid 77 speed figure last time out, will clearly be a factor in this contest. Win percentage with this jockey and handler combo - 23 percent - reliable. LEMON SOHN - Has to be carefully examined here on the basis of the numbers in the speed department alone. Has performed admirably recently in route races, posting a nifty 65 avg speed figure. COPPERJACKET - Ought to be carefully examined based on the strong Equibase Speed Figure posted in the last race. Rengstorf has this gelding racing well and is a very good choice based on the respectable Equibase Speed Figures recorded in route races recently.

                  Belterra Park - Race #8 - Post: 4:05pm - SO - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $11,000 Class Rating: 89

                  Rating:

                  #3 ROCK N ROLL BOLT (ML=5/2)
                  #12 ROYALLY BITTER (ML=6/5)

ROCK N ROLL BOLT - This horse has recorded the best recent turf speed rating at the distance/surface. This trainer brings horses to the turf ready to win, winning over 20 percent of the time under similar conditions. I'm focusing on the class of this horse, and this one is the 'classiest' of the bunch. This horse earns a lot of money per race. I believe he will boost the lifetime earnings today. ROYALLY BITTER - A winning pct the likes of what Correa and Danner have achieved together is tremendous. Have to make this gelding a serious competitor; he comes off a strong race on July 11th.

Vulnerable Contenders: #10 GOLDEN REIGN (ML=9/5), #11 RACE DAY REBAL (ML=2/1), #4 VAST HORIZONS (ML=7/2),

GOLDEN REIGN - Tough to like the downward moving flow (88/78/73) of speed ratings. Don't feel this vulnerable equine will make a winning move in today's race. That last speed figure was disappointing when compared with today's class figure. RACE DAY REBAL - If you keep selecting these kind of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be dissatisfied most of the time. VAST HORIZONS - Ran well to finish second on June 24th, but hasn't had even a drill since then.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - ROCK N ROLL BOLT - Scary early and closing speed on this one. Gonzalez should have him ready when they hit the top of the lane to make a winning move.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #3 ROCK N ROLL BOLT to win. Have to have odds of at least 3/2 or better though
