    Scott Shapiro: Saratoga Spot Plays

    July 24, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

A two-day carryover of $192,793 in the Pick 6 at Del Mar headlines the latter part of the Friday thoroughbred action, but there are plenty of other strong opportunities before that during a solid Saratoga card that features the Shuvee (G2) for older fillies and mares. The $250k race is one of two stakes on the agenda on an afternoon that also offers a trio of maiden special weight events. Here are a couple of horses I like in the maiden races, as well as my thoughts on the feature.

    Race 2:
My first play comes in this MSW for 2YO fillies at two-turns over the Inner Turf where I like #5 Margie’s Girl. The Kenny McPeek trainee was hammered down from her double-digit ML on debut in mid-May at Churchill Downs and put forth a solid third-place run after being in tight early costing her position. McPeek wheeled her back on short rest to be a part of the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival where she once again ran well, but was caught in chase mode due to the incredibly strong break from the gate by the eventual wire-to-wire winner. The Vekoma filly has shown ability in races that appear to sharp for her and has every reason to relish the added ground based on her bottom side pedigree. The fact Jose Ortiz returns to take the call adds to the appeal.

    Play: #5 Margie’s Girl (7-2 ML)
    Picks: 5-3-10

    Race 6:
My next play comes in this 2YO MSW event for fillies sprinting over the sod where there are plenty of ways to go, but I landed on second-time starter #5 Red Coats Coming. The Army Mule filly was chilly on the tote before her debut on the night of June 20 and did not run great, but also was caught in chase mode most of the way due to the dominant performance from Joel Politi’s Stress Relief. The effort overall does not look great on paper, but that should only help her price. Trainer Joe Sharp thought enough of her to bring her to Saratoga where she gets a big rider upgrade to Luis Saez. Hopefully, the experience under her belt and a better break from the gate lead to a big run on the move from dirt-to-turf.

Play: #5 Red Coats Coming (8-1 ML)
    Picks: 5-8-9

    Race 8: Shuvee (G2)
I lack a strong opinion in this 1 1/8-mile test for fillies and mares where last year’s 15-length winner #4 Scottish Lassie and #3 Fully Subscribed are expected to take a lot of the public’s attention and deservingly so. Scottish Lassie has not raced often, but she has run some big races when she has competed in the afternoons. That said, she has been unable to piece them together for the most part. She did run a solid third in the Acorn (G1) a year ago before she won the CCA Oaks, but that win came in her third not second start off the bench. Scottish Lassie seems capable of both running off the screen again or putting in a solid underneath effort. Fully Subscribed has been more consistent finishing first or second in six of her seven career starts, including two over this surface. She has been defeated by a pair of very nice horses in her two runner-up efforts so far in 2026, but her last run was still somewhat disappointing. For that reason, I will hope #5 Bless the Broken can put together a career best run in her third start of the form cycle for Brad Cox. She has not been good enough to compete with Shred the Gnar or Nitrogen when the real running started in her last two Grade 1 tries, but she attracts Irad Ortiz Jr. and will be a significantly better price than the two most logical fillies.

Play: #5 Bless the Broken (7-2 ML)
    Picks: 5-4-3

      Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Spot Plays

      July 24, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

The Meadowlands has a big 15-race card featuring Kindergarten Series action. The Spot Plays are in Race 6, Race 10, and Race 15. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 6 (8:40 PM EDT)

6-Green Maztake (7/2)-The Greenshoe 3-year-old has a good speed but has trouble staying on stride. Broke 2 back at M1 and has taken steps in 3 of the last 5 races. The reason to play is because the last start at Philly was a sharp performance. Rolled the back half in .55 and got up to win by a head. Will look for another flat effort and there's no telling what kind of speed the Smedshammer filly could bring on a larger oval if minds its manners. Should be hungry for a win, this is a sharp outfit, the breaking issues could be solved and will look for a square price.

Playing #6 Green Maztake to Win

      6-1-3

      Race 10 (10:20 PM EDT)

3-Love Somebody (3-1)-Toscano trainee has cashed checks against Pennsylvania Sires Stakes company on smaller ovals. Could improve from the bottom of the ticket to taking a picture on the driver change to Dexter Dunn. This is a grinder that needs the button pushed at the right time and this pilot knows how.

Using #3 Love Somebody in a Win Bet.

      3-2-5

      Race 15 (12:25 AM EDT)

8-Almost Karen (8-1)-Jason Bartlett sticks around for the finale on a long night to steer for the Maria Reid barn. That peaked my interest as Bartlett has only driven for Reid 3 times and has won all 3. Did win 2 back at this level then stepped up and put in a no-move mile on 7-17. Drops back to the level of its last win and that was with tonight's pilot. Not sure if the 8-1 program price holds up but should offer a solid return with this post draw.

Playing #8 Almost Karen to Win

      8-10-1

Ellis Park Late Pick 4/Friday, July 24

        July 24, 2026 | By Frank Carulli

        Ellis Park Late Pick 4
        Friday, July 24

There’s no stakes race on Ellis Park’s nine-race card this Friday, July 24, but bettors may see it differently. Every race in the Late Pick 4 sequence carries a $100,000-plus purse, attracting 38 entries and adding to the appeal of the 50-cent wager.

        Ellis Park 6th Race (3:12 p.m. EST)

BREAKING HEARTS deserves a longshot look off her maiden win the last time she ran on turf. She got the jump on the troubled 5-2 second favorite with a wide bid midway on the final turn, but she finished the deal in style with a powerful late surge. DAGMARA can be excused after she retreated to the back of the pack and never threatened after a bumpy start last out, but she traveled “comfortably” in a post 10 win and got caught in a 1-3/16-mile marathon while on the lead in her first two starts with blinkers. MY STUBBORN LASSIE was last seen 10 months ago, rallying into a blanket finish and placing third against the boys in a turf allowance at this distance. The performance was validated when Storm’s Wake proceeded to win the Grade 2 Appalachian on the Keeneland lawn and place in a pair of Grade 3’s this year. Trainer Peter Eurton is 7/2-2-0 since 2025 with turf routers off similar layoffs. She is the top choice in here.

        Ellis Park 7th Race (3:42 p.m. EST)

SASSY PRINCESS has tactical speed and more wins at today’s distance than the rest of the field combined. She starts fresh after winning three races in 27 days this Spring. CONSEQUENT will be an underlay in her seasonal debut for trainer Bob Baffert, yet hard to keep off the ticket. She “lost focus” in a first-out victory at Del Mar against multiple Grade 3-placed Bank Shot, but the rest of the field is a combined 15/0-1-2 since then. She caught her 2-to-5 stablemate in the Grade 2 Starlet Stakes to cap her 2-year-old campaign.

        Ellis Park 8th Race (4:12 p.m. EST)

Save for 50-1 longshot DEWY’S DENALL, this 1-1/16-mile turf allowance for 3-year-olds appears anyone’s race, prompting an all-but-one Pick 4 punch. PATROL SQUAD SIX finished in the money on five turf courses in his last seven starts since September. Trainer Brad Cox sends out the uncoupled duo of SWIFT BLADE, who posted the top speed figure in the field in his maiden win, and WHITE TIGER, whose sire has produced 250 turf route winners at an average winning distance of one mile. SHARON’S PHAROAH survived a stretch-long battle to break his maiden at 1-1/8 miles at Santa Anita two starts ago. WHATCHADOIN is winless on the turf but he ran third in a four-horse field in his U.S. debut behind two, low-80 Beyer-type rivals who have combined for $813k in grass earnings. Trainer Kelsey Danner has two wins and a near miss from three turf route entrants at the current meet.

        Ellis Park 9th Race (4:12 p.m. EST)

YO FANCY was bumped outward from post 11 at the break, trailed at the quarter pole, closed with a furious rush for second and galloped out past the winning favorite. If she stays in contact with the field early from post 12, she will be a handful to hold off with an extra half-furlong to travel. KAYKAY also delivered a promising debut run from post 11. She raced 3- and 4-wide until she ranged up boldly behind the lead pair on the turn, only to flatten out in mid-stretch. She draws the rail today.

        Suggested 50-Cent Pick 4
        ELP 6th Race: 2, 3, 6
        ELP 7th Race: 3, 5
        ELP 8th Race: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
        ELP 9th Race: 1, 12
        Cost for a 50-Cent ticket: $48

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Del Mar - Race #6
#2 The Old Nine Think he might be a little light compared to the next two, but he's a 'now' horse with a couple of really solid scores under his belt in those last two starts, and he'll get overlooked while facing some stakes types today.
#7 Irish Royalty Dropper has been pretty tough outside of stakes company since coming into this barn, and wasn't embarrassed in a pretty decent group last time out. The one to beat?
#8 Lonesome Stew He's one of the main players in here, but I can't imagine you're going to get the 5/1 ML offering as he drops out of stakes company with turf tries on his page that would land this.
Race Summary Mild lean here, but the price should be interesting enough to see if The Old Nine can hold that sharp form and perhaps even bring it forward just a touch to compete with this stakes-level group.
          Del Mar - Race #7
#3 Lino's Angel Price reach here, but I liked her last a bit and wonder if she might find just a bit more punch on the move to this long sprint trip. Obviously has a lot of tables to turn, but the price should reflect that.
#8 Mohaven She probably drills these at a short price, and her speedy versatile style makes her dangerous from anywhere up close. Wouldn't argue that hard with you if you just leaned here and moved on.
#6 She's No Quant Her main-track form is the question, but she has been honest through four starts and probably isn't too far off the better ones in here if she's able to transfer the talent to the main.
Race Summary Mohaven is probably tough here -- she has aired this kind of group a couple times already -- but I wonder if Lino's Angel might be in deceptively good form off the last one? Price makes it worth taking the shot for me.
          Del Mar - Race #8
#4 Going Nowhere Would be willing to land here at something shorter than the 8/1 ML price, as he has knocked on the door against similar already and has the speed to sit close throughout and get the jump on the next guy.
#9 Flash of Lightning He's got reliable form, but his lack of early speed is becoming a problem, coming alive too late in every start on his page. Obvious threat with his best, but he'd also be no surprise for just another share.
#10 Royal Rumor Not totally sure what to think here, but the two-back run wasn't bad, and maybe the route trip works in his favor with a pedigree to get the mile? Seems reasonable enough to hope for better today.
Race Summary Going Nowhere has plenty of appeal in the finale, as he has now proven he fits at the level and should get the jump on a couple of capable finishing types.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Ellis Park - Race #3
#4 RELEVATE (8-5) Faced some hard hitters in last pair, should graduate with similar rest between starts.
#3 BULLET BABY (4-1) Met five follow-up winners in four starts with Lasix, earned top speed fig at 1M.
#2 TOTAL FABRICATION (3-1) Pressed winner through fast pace from post 11, held third at Churchill.
Race Summary RELEVATE stands out in this maiden claiming route race and is today’s Best Bet. She was no threat in her first start for Team Asmussen, facing the likes of stakes-placed Pink Ruby (4-12, $180k) and next-out allowance runaway End of Innocence (5-23, $129k). She rallied in tandem last out with the winner but settled for second behind Lexi’s Melody, who just missed in a $30,000/nw2 claimer last month. Make a flat win bet and play a 50-cent Pick 3 with numbers 4/ALL/1, 2 (Cost $10).
            Ellis Park - Race #4
#8 R LAST LAUGH (7-2) Hoping for exactly that in crowded turf field and all but one first-time starter.
#3 WORTH THE MISCHIEF (10-1) Champion sire won seven graded stakes and two Breeders’ Cup turf sprints.
#10 ETNA (3-1) Lone entrant to race, angled 6-wide in stretch and ran second on conventional dirt.
Race Summary R LAST LAUGH gets the nod in a turf sprint with 11 first-time starters. She prepped well for this on the Churchill Downs main track, she’s by 2026 Top-30 grass sire Practical Joke, her dam was a Grade 3 winner on the lawn and trainer Brendan Walsh is 33-for-217 the last five years with debut turf starters at an average $15.20 win payout. Bet to win and place and play 8-3 and 8-10 exactas.
            Ellis Park - Race #5
#1 RANCH LIFE (12-1) Ohio invader worth a price shot in three-peat try off dominant win at this distance.
#2 COUNTRY CLUB (2-1) Pressed leaders on turn, edged away, held off two next-out winners at 1-1/8 miles.
#7 LIL TOWN SIS (8-1) Well-beaten in three starts since back-to-back wins at Oaklawn last Spring.
Race Summary RANCH LIFE gets the class test off a visually impressive repeat victory at Belterra Park. She was handled with supreme confidence, racing in-hand from just off the pace and exploding on the final turn en route to a 5-3/4-length romp. The third-place finisher came back with an 11-length win and 64 Beyer speed figure in a bottom-level claimer at Mountaineer Park. Bet to win and place and play a 1/ 2, 7/ALL trifecta and a 1-2 exacta box.

                  # 10 CALL ME TONI 5/1
                  # 5 SOMME RIVER 3/1
                  # 6 POWER AND GLORY 10/1
My choice in this race is CALL ME TONI. Should best this field here, showing very good figs of late. Has the look of a profitable play. Have to examine solely on class, with some of the best class figs of this group of animals. SOMME RIVER - Has to be given a chance here on the basis of the figures in the speed department alone. Posted a formidable speed figure in the latest race. Can run another good one in this contest. POWER AND GLORY - Is a key contender - given the 73 speed rating from her most recent race. Thompson has this mare racing well and is a very good choice based on the very good speed figures posted in route races lately.

                    Century Mile - Race #7 - Post: 9:15pm - Optional Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,500 Class Rating: 94

                    Rating:

                    #4 MY MUNNINGS MODEL (ML=5/1)
                    #6 YOU'REINTHEARMYNOW (ML=12/1)

MY MUNNINGS MODEL - Always be wary of the longer priced horse when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. Have to make this gelding a contender; he comes off a strong race on Jul 4th. This gelding garnered a nice rating of 91 in his last event. That speed fig should be lofty enough to triumph in today's event. YOU'REINTHEARMYNOW - When Van Overschot gives Perez a leg up on any magnificent animal, you know that with their win pct you have at worst a fighting chance.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SPARKLET (ML=5/2), #3 CHAMBERS (ML=3/1), #5 DONTBRINGMEDOWN (ML=5/1),

SPARKLET - This closer looks to have little chance without a speed duel on the front end. Jul 1st is the last time we've seen this gelding around. Have to be a little bit leery. CHAMBERS - Finished second in his most recent effort with a run-of-the-mill speed fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this field. DONTBRINGMEDOWN - Difficult to put your cash on the win end of any racer that finishes second and third as regularly as this one does. Unlikely that the speed rating he recorded on Jul 10th will be good enough in this affair.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 MY MUNNINGS MODEL is the play if we get odds of 3/1 or better

                      Saratoga - Race #10 - Post: 6:19pm - Maiden Special - 12.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $115,000 Class Rating: 88

                      Rating:

                      #9 WAR AND MAJESTY (ML=6/1)
                      #2 LIMITED EDITION (ML=6/1)
                      #1 LAHAINALUNA (ML=8/1)
                      #3 MORTAL LOCK (ML=12/1)
                      #4 GOLD SOVEREIGN (ML=4/1)

WAR AND MAJESTY - The rider and trainer combination have a lucrative return on investment when they join forces. Comparing how the horses in this field have fared under similar conditions, I see this animal has the highest speed figure for the distance-surface. LIMITED EDITION - For my money, a bullet workout is the best indicator of fitness there is. Look at that last one - 51.0. Very impressive. Santana was aboard this gelding last out and was impressed enough to take the horse right back. Personally, I wouldn't worry about where he finished in his last race (fifth). Should improve in this race, with some pretty decent odds. Came home fast last time out at Saratoga. That type of move bodes well for his chances right here. LAHAINALUNA - With 'blinkers-on' this colt should be very competitive. MORTAL LOCK - I like the fact that this gelding's last rating, 91, is tops in this bunch. Notched a nice turf fig on June 26th at Belmont at the Big A. A repeat today, and this one has a great shot to win. Horse has improved at least 2 Equibase speed fig points in last two races. I look for that trend to continue in this race. Was disqualified in last. Can make amends today. GOLD SOVEREIGN - Brown is solid in turf routes. This horse should have no justifications if he doesn't win. This animal collects a lot of dough per race around the track. I believe he can increase the lifetime earnings in this event.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #5 INSTANTLY (ML=7/2), #10 BATTLE (ML=9/2), #7 ORGONITE (ML=9/2),

INSTANTLY - Don't think that this gelding has value at 7/2 this time. BATTLE - Last performed on June 5th at Saratoga, finishing sixth. Not likely to improve off of that outing in today's race. Finished sixth in his most recent race with a somewhat easily forgotten speed figure. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this bunch. ORGONITE - Disappointing rating last out at Belmont at the Big A at 1 3/8 miles. Don't feel this mount will improve too much in today's event.

I back CYBER HOSTAGE here. Is worth looking at and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figures (71 average) at today's distance and surface recently. Looks quite good against this field and should be one of the front-runners. Is a key contender - given the 71 speed rating from his most recent race. DULCE CREEK SENATOR - Looks very strong against this field and will almost certainly be one of the leaders. Has to be given a shot versus this field displaying decent figures as of late and an average speed figure of 64 under similar conditions. FAMOSA SIN TACHA - Her 69 average has this filly with among the best speed figs for this event. Has a solid shot in this race if you like back class.
