    Scott Shapiro: Saratoga Spot Plays

    July 28, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

The first five-day racing week of the summer is upon us in Saratoga Springs, which means a Wednesday of thoroughbred action in New York. The first of several “Hump Day” cards over the next several weeks commences at 1:10 PM local time with a MSW event out of the Wilson chute. The mid-week card is headlined by the return of Bill Mott conditioned Chief Wallabee. The fourth-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) is set to take on five rivals in a spot where he is likely to be odds-on. Here are my thoughts on the Curlin Stakes, as well as a couple of horses I am most interested in to kick off the racing week.

    Race 1:
#5 Wedelia and first-time starter #3 Maria Louise are expected to take the lion’s share of the wagering based on David Aragona’s morning line in this MSW for fillies and mares 3YOs+ at one-mile over the main track. Wedelia was made the 7-5-top choice off a pair of underneath finishes over the sloppy going at Churchill Downs, while the $850k daughter of Gun Runner is listed at 9-5. Debuting out of the Wilson chute suggests to me that Maria Louise is using this as a race to prepare for a true two-turn test in her second start, while I am concerned about Wedelia’s lack of early zip over a course that has played towards speed the first several weeks. I will try to beat them both with #1 Noble Glow. The Juddmonte homebred debuted in a 7-furlong sprint in Louisville in late November where she battled on the front end while wide on the backstretch, eventually got the best of the other speeds at the top of the lane, but had little left late for those coming from off-the-pace. She has been given plenty of time since that first start and should be fit for her return to the races. Flavien Prat was in the saddle on debut and is back once again. I like her chances with a clean break from her rail draw.

Play: #1 Noble Glow (5-1 ML
    Picks: 1-5-6

    Race 6: Curlin Stakes
The aforementioned Wednesday feature is this $150k 1 1/8-event over the main track for 3YOs which have not won a graded stakes race. The clear class of the field is #4 Chief Wallabee. The 4-5-ML favorite has not won since a stylish debut victory at Gulfstream in January, but finished second in the Fountain of Youth (G2) followed up by third beaten a half-length in the Florida Derby (G1). His Kentucky Derby was better than looks based on flow and trip, but he fell flat in the Belmont over this surface. The class relief should help him, but he is likely to get hammered exiting the Triple Crown runs.

I prefer #1 Blackout Time. The son of Not This Time was very good as a juvenile, including a runner-up effort to Ted Noffey in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) before heading to the sidelines until late winter. Kenny McPeek brought him back off the bench in the Rebel (G2) where he disappointed much like he did in the Arkansas Derby (G1) leaving him out of the Triple Crown series. McPeek gave him three months off before bringing him back in a competitive allowance in Kentucky where he romped over the sloppy going. He draws the rail and has some upside still making him my play in this year’s Curlin.

Play: #1 Blackout Time (3-1 ML)
    Picks: 1-4-3

    Race 7:
My final play of the day comes in this second-level allowance at 9-furlongs over the grass where I like #1 Tirupati. The Mitole mare makes her second start of the form cycle for trainer Jonathan Thomas after getting a much different trip in an allowance at Ellis Park than I anticipate on Wednesday afternoon. It was Umberto Rispoli aboard in Kentucky in early July and he did not ride this gal as aggressively as I expect Luis Saez to in her first try over the Saratoga grass. Rispoli was somewhat passive out of the gate, which led to Tirupati getting caught between rivals while mid-pack in the early stages. This allowed the eventual winner to get the jump on her. Saez is unlikely to have Tirupati on the lead, but I expect him to ride for position out of the gate and sit a favorable ground saving pocket trip throughout. If so, she has a big shot to get the money.

    Play: #1 Tirupati (9-2 ML)
    Picks: 1-5-6

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
#2 Trail of Roses She'll make her local debut in this second career start after an OK chasing debut try at Penn. Think she's quick enough to find a spot right up near the top in a race without at on of serious early sprint pace.
#5 Deference Cutback pace is probably going to be tough in here after a couple of decent New York runs, but the price will likely be short in a race with no other standout.
#7 Moonpie Delight She has given away ground late in all three starts, but she's got the positional pace to at least be in a good spot turning for home, and maybe she can plug away for a share from there. Wouldn't be a total shock on top, but I think it'll be one of the top pair.
Race Summary Trail of Roses gets the edge here with some upside while going second time out, and I think he might move forward on the new footing -- sire Munnings has posted about 22% winners here over the last six years.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #3
#5 Going Up Think he's on the attack the whole way here in a short field, and he has been competitive with some of these in the past. Dangerous if he's ready to fire fresh.
#4 Souper Forces He's a stakes winner going long on the grass, but he won his career debut going short here last season and should have at least a fair pace to kick at with a couple potential pace types lined up.
#2 Spirited Sol Always been a big fan of his and wouldn't put it past him to score in this one -- he posted a 34/1 stakes upset here a couple starts back and returns to his best game today after the Monmouth dirt try. He's more fun when he's overlooked.
Race Summary Going Up might get the right kind of prompting run off John Dutton, and he has been very reliable outside of some stakes tries that darken his otherwise sharp form.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#1 Its Satisfactual You've got a few speed players and a couple other pressing/spying types lined up -- so I want someone who can chill for a bit and get the last laugh. The recent form here is really flat, but she owns a couple of OK finishing tries on her page earlier this year. Hoping she's a clunk up winner at a big number.
#4 Cocktail Kisses She's probably the most likely beneficiary of the speed-forward race flow here, as she can relax and avoid getting caught up near the pace, but she's far more tactical than the top choice. Dangerous.
#9 I'm Blushing I don't trust her form a whole lot, but she has bounced back off flat runs in a couple of those recent starts, so maybe it's worth forgiving her last one. The two-back try was competitive at this local level -- can't move into this pace too early.
Race Summary Its Satisfactual is a price swing in a race that could come undone late. Would also want #7 Old Fashioned Girl on the tickets with some closing potential.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Louisiana Downs - Race #1
#2 RIDDICK (5-1) Duplicate of lone grass sprint puts him in the winning mix at a good price.
#6 EAGLE IN THE AIR (6-5) Looks best on paper but has yet to finish 1-2 in a dozen starts.
#7 SKY WITNESS (6-1) Showed speed in both starts, changes surfaces with new pilot.
Race Summary RIDDICK returns to the turf for his new barn, two races removed from earning a competitive speed figure for a $25,000 tag. He gave way chasing the 2-to-1 winner, who was dropping from MSW company and finished behind I Tiz Divine, who returned with a wire-to-wire MSW victory. Bet to win and place and play a 2-6 exacta box.
        Louisiana Downs - Race #5
#5 BOSS KID (4-1) Useful debut, angled and drifted wide, barn on 3-for-4 run with blinkers added.
#3 HAND (5-2) Rallied past Boss Kid and into photo-finish view after he came in at the break.
#7 ELECTRIC MAN (6-1) Solid work tab for high-percentage barn that is 1-for-34 with first-time starters.
Race Summary BOSS KID breezed 5F in a 1:01 leading to a well-bet debut on the lawn. He chased the dueling leaders but angled out and drifted in the stretch. He finished willingly but out of the money, now wears blinkers for his second go-round. Bet to win and place and play a 5-ALL exacta.
        Louisiana Downs - Race #7
#8 FORT CAMPBELL (5-1) Deserves another chance after burning money in turf-to-dirt stateside debut.
#9 STAR ROCK STAR (5-2) Strong grass numbers, won allowance race the last time Hernandez rode.
#2 AMBRIDGE (9-5) Rallied for back-to-back wins at 1M on the lawn but not in latest for twice this much.
Race Summary FORT CAMPBELL, bet down to favoritism in his U.S. debut, vied for the lead until the stretch in a longer turf-to-dirt route race before tiring. He gets Lasix today for top trainer Jonathan Wong, who is 41-for-139 with turf entrants in the last year. Bet to win and place and play 8-2 and 8-9 exactas.

              # 5 IF YOU INSIST 2/1
              # 3 SCAT FACTOR 9/2
BAXLEY is the most respectable wager in this race. Could provide positive gains based on very good recent speed figures with an average of 87. He has a quite good distance/surface win record - 1 for 2. Has formidable early speed and will almost certainly fare admirably versus this group. IF YOU INSIST - Has solid front speed and will probably fare quite well against this group. Is a key contender - given the 83 speed fig from his most recent race. SCAT FACTOR - Is a sharp contender based on numbers garnered as of late under today's conditions. Going in a dirt route race gives this gelding a very strong shot.

                Rating:

                #7 GARNET AND GOLD (ML=5/2)

GARNET AND GOLD - Trainer Rice moves this horse down the ladder based on class rating points to face much lower class horses. Look for a nice race in this race. Barbosa should have her moving big on the turn. This mare is in nice physical condition, having run a nice race on Jul 13th, finishing third.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #1 FLOAT AWAY (ML=3/1), #3 RUNAWAY BREEZE (ML=7/2), #4 MISS M M (ML=4/1),

FLOAT AWAY - This horse didn't race too well last out finishing third. No reason to expect any betterment today. RUNAWAY BREEZE - If you keep playing these sort of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be let down regularly. This mare ran her top speed figure in some time on the dirt in a sprint race. There may be a strong performance bounce today. MISS M M - This mare is always in the money, but just doesn't finish on top. Hard to wager on her on the win end.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - GARNET AND GOLD - I like to check out the TrackMaster Platinum PPs to look for the top racer in earnings per start. This horse looks good to me so I'm making a prime bet on her.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #7 GARNET AND GOLD to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds

                  #10 CONTINUE (ML=5/1)
                  #7 MO BREEZY (ML=12/1)

CONTINUE - Barrios is back for another event today after getting on board this animal for the first ride on Jul 7th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. I like that most recent outing on July 7th at Mountaineer Park where she ran second. MO BREEZY - Taking a trip down the ladder based on class rating points; has the class to make her presence felt. Just missed hitting the board on July 5th at Belterra Park. With respectable odds in this event, she has my interest.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #8 COLLECTED MIST (ML=5/2), #3 BRAND NEW DANCE (ML=9/2), #5 GORDA (ML=6/1),

COLLECTED MIST - June 13th is the last time we've seen this filly around. Have to be a little bit leery. I can't play this continual non-winner. Gets the task finished from time to time. BRAND NEW DANCE - Hasn't been close at all recently. This filly garnered a speed fig in her last race which likely isn't good enough in today's event. GORDA - There's speed, zip, and more early zip in this event. Doesn't look too promising for this horse.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #10 CONTINUE on the win end if we get at least 8/5 odds

                    # 6 NANTUCKET 4/1
                    # 8 WHISKEY POINT 2/1
JIMMY RULES looks to be a solid contender. He must be carefully examined given the quite good speed figs. This gelding looks strong in this race since Anderson has a strong win percentage with horses going this distance. His earnings per start in dirt sprint events alone makes you take a look at him. NANTUCKET - Looks competitive for the conditions of this race today, showing solid figures in dirt sprint races lately. This gelding with Barbaran in the saddle makes him a definite contender. WHISKEY POINT - Recently Puhl has provided bettors with a very good winning percentage with horses racing in dirt sprint races. Should definitely be given a shot in this event if only for the solid speed figure recorded in the last affair.
