    Scott Shapiro: Saratoga Spot Plays

    July 29, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

The final week of racing in July continues on Thursday afternoon with a nine-race card that is headlined by the Glens Falls (G2) at 1 ?-miles over the Inner Turf. The feature goes as Race 8 on a day where racing commences at 1:10 PM eastern. Here are a few horses I like most on the day, including my thoughts on the Glens Falls.

    Race 4:
He will not be a big price to kick off the Thursday Pick 6, but #5 Preside should be tough to beat in this seven-horse field of MSW foes going 1 1/8-miles over the main track. The $1.5M OBS April ’25 purchase was off to a very slow start on debut before making a middle move and tiring late going seven-furlongs on June 7. Trainer Steve Asmussen brought the Tiz the Law colt back just 20 days later in Louisville to make his first two-turn start and he moved forward significantly. Not only did Preside show far more gate speed than he did in his first start, but ran very well overall to finish second beaten just half a length. He has three local works since, retains the services of Irad Ortiz Jr., and should beat this group with a repeat of his run at Churchill Downs a month ago over the off track.

    Play: #5 Preside (7-5 ML)
    Picks: 5-1-6

    Race 6:
My next play comes in this open $30k claimer over the main track where I do not trust the ML favorites. #2 Run Classic’s best races crush this field, but I have major concerns about where the 8YO is at this point of his career. He moves into the Joe Sharp barn and drops in class in his first start since late May, but is likely to take too much public support. #3 Pair of Socks also drops in class off the freshening for Linda Rice. He was consistent this winter/spring at Aqueduct hitting the board in all five starts, but earned just one win to show for it. Plus, Rice is off to a chilly start to the summer, especially over the dirt. The veteran conditioner is just 3 for 38 heading into action on Wednesday dating back to the start of the meeting for a $0.53 ROI making this one tough to get excited about at his 2-1-ML offering.
I will try to get the jump on them both with New York-bred #5 Factually Correct. The son of Tourist was claimed out of his last race by low profile trainer Roshan Samshunder. The new connections leg up Kendrick Carmouche after watching the gelding get caught in chase mode in a race where the two speeds dominated from start-to-finish on July 9. Carmouche should have no issue getting this one into the race and is probably the horse that moves up most over a potential off track. Hopefully, it propels him to his first career victory at the Spa.

Play: #5 Factually Correct (9-2 ML)
    Picks: 5-2-4

    Race 8: Glens Falls (G2)
There is a good chance there will be at least some moisture in the grass when they run this $250k event for fillies and mares at 12-furlongs at 5:14 PM eastern where #4 Gezora was made the significant 2-1-ML favorite by oddsmaker David Aragona. The French-bred showed a strong turn of foot in her first two races in the States, but fell flat last out in the New York (G1) when headstrong early from her outside draw over a firm Saratoga lawn. She should bounce back with the course likely to be play differently than it did in early June, but at a short price I will let her beat me. #7 Bellezza is the one that intrigues me most. The Moyglare Stud Farm homebred made her second start of the year last month in the Robert G. Dick Memorial (G3). She competed against three of her probable rivals in the Glens Falls over the firm ground that day at Delaware Park and was beaten by all three. That said, she had major traffic issues along the inside when attempting to make her run. With a cleaner trip and a move forward second off the bench, she has a shot to spring the upset.

    Play: #7 Bellezza (8-1 ML)
    Picks: 7-4-2

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
#4 Freestate Worried he'll be a bit overbet off the bench while dropping into the easiest spot he has seen, but I think there are a few races on his page that would keep him in the mix.
#2 Stark County He was no match for the winner in the local debut, but something like that is probably competitive for top honors with this crew, and he may still have some upside after just two starts.
#6 Yes I'm Jess His form has really tailed off, but he's another who is landing in the softest spot he has ever seen, and he used to be pretty solid over the local footing. Maybe the softer group helps him rediscover it a bit.
Race Summary No real argument for any of the top three listed here, but think Freestate might have a class edge that gets him home if he's ready to run off the bench.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#6 Justice Is Sweet Not sure he's the best horse in here, but I think he's going to get a really nice run of things while sitting just off a couple of quicker players early, and I really liked his graduation run two starts back when he ran long.
#1 Quasi Warrior He should be in the mix throughout, and he has room to bounce back while dropping out of stakes company. New footing is a question at what may be a short price.
#3 King Mendelssohn He's in really good form right now, but there's a new forward element lined up on the fence that might challenge his trip a bit.
Race Summary Justice Is Sweet has room to improve while stretching out again, as he posted a sharp effort a couple starts back around two turns. Think he might trip out just in behind the speed.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#6 Goose Hunter He has been way back while landing small shares in those last two starts with better, but he was competitive at this kind of level earlier in the meet and should get a decent run of things in a race with a few forward players.
#10 Maynard The overall form is kind of flat, but it has come with better company than he's going to find here, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him wake up a bit with these.
#1 Tempus He's another who might get an OK finishing run, and his better stuff puts him in the frame with these. Worry that he's going to be an underlay with some tables to turn, but he seems capable.
Race Summary Goose Hunter might be able to get the right kind of finishing run behind an honest pace, and the drop in class might be all it takes to get him home.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Delaware Park - Race #2
#7 LATEST EDITION (3-1) Near misses in last pair stack up well in this field in second start for new barn.
#6 BOTTLE ROCKET (6-1) Late-running price play off the claim if she can stay in closer contact.
#3 MISS NEO (6-1) Sprung 22-1 front-end shocker at Monmouth after nine months away.
Race Summary LATEST EDITION can stalk and pounce from a favorable post as she looks to upgrade a pair of photo-finish sprint setbacks. She gets in light-weighted in a field that is a combined 2-for-49 since the January 19 eligibility cutoff date. Bet to win and place and play a $1 daily double with numbers 6,7/3, 5, 8 Cost $6).
        Delaware Park - Race #3
#3 SMOKESHOW (8-1) Finished 1-1/4 lengths behind next-out MSW winner, dam won $50k turf ‘starter.’
#5 TIZ COMPLEX (6-1) Can make good use of her speed in third start this year, runs for cheapest tag yet.
#8 SEGER SONGS (5-2) Takes needed class drop with 0-for-13 record intact, should land a share.
Race Summary SMOKESHOW bumped a rival at the start, lost ground 5-wide but showed some improvement in her second start. She stretches out in distance and switches to turf. Her dam, Smokin Deb (7/2-1-2, $63k) won a $50,000 starter allowance on the Aqueduct lawn. The price is right for a win and place bet and a play a $1 Pick 3 with numbers 3, 5/2, 6/1, 4, 5 (Cost $12).
        Delaware Park - Race #5
#4 READY AS EVER (12-1) Ran 2/5 faster than PA-bred allowance on same day, picks up 7 pounds.
#1 MAJESTIC BLUE (8-1) Awakened with blinkers on, romped in turf marathon, draws rail.
#5 AL RASIKH (3-1) Exited ‘triple key’ race and upgraded to a win, added ground a plus.
Race Summary Not often a Ness-trained runner is 12-1 on the morning line. So why not take a shot with READY AS EVER, who posted an 84 Beyer in an easy 6-1/2F starter allowance victory last out and showed some late interest after a poor start as the beaten favorite in his lone turf try. Bet to win and place and play a 1-3-4-5 exacta box.
