Jeremy Plonk: Del Mar Spot Plays | Thursday, July 30, 2026 2026

    July 28, 2026 | By Jeremy Plonk

A 4-day racing week awaits as Del Mar hits Week 3 of the summer stand. A strong Saturday built on an already positive ROI, and after the first 2 weeks of Del Mar racing, our 39 top choices have returned $3.14 for every $2 bet – at an average win price of $13.60. First post for Thursday’s 8-race card is 5 pm ET / 2 pm PT.

Each day this summer at Del Mar, I’ll be handicapping the action with my top plays on the card – including full-card selections for a featured program each week (this week’s full-card will be Saturday).

Del Mar: Race 2| 5:30 pm ET
#4 Baytown Butterfly (8-1 morning line odds) imploded last time when stretched to a mile with blinkers on. She’s back to a preferred distance and the hood is removed by trainer Peter Miller (31% going blinkers off). Eligible for the ship-and-win bonus money via Kentucky, well-placed and the Omaha Beach offspring have won a sharp 23% here in recent years coming into the summer. Win-place bet #4. Picks 4-1-3

Del Mar: Race 7 | 8:00 pm ET
#10 Syntax (7-2 morning line odds) outran her longshot odds in the Desert Stormer last out and comes back to a very competitive level for a jockey-trainer combo having success at the meeting. But it’s sire Pavel who has stolen the show – his offspring are an incredible 7: 5-1-0 at the current meet (including wins at $32, $82 and a second at 10-1). Win bet #10. Daily Double 10-1. Picks 10-4-3

Del Mar: Race 8 | 8:30 pm ET
#1 Sunny Creed (12-1 morning line odds) hits the 2-sprints-to-a-route form cycle and trainer Jeff Mullins has been pulling the right strings on turf early in the Del Mar stand. He’s 10-2-2-3 on grass with $14 and $16 winners plus another 13-1 shot on the board. Flips from tough post last out to a great rail trip here for a 34%, highly profitable jockey-trainer combo. Use with stablemate #4 Winika. Win-place bet #1. Exacta 1,4 with 1,4,9. Picks 1-4-9.

Jeremy Plonk: Bet $100, Get $10 Charles Town Key Plays | Thursday

      July 29, 2026 | By 1/ST BET

Throughout July, Tuesdays and Thursdays heat up at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet with our Red, White & Bet promotion. Bet $100, Get $10 on select tracks this month. Next up Thursday will be Charles Town, our final offering for the month-long promotion. Here’s how I’ll approach the card in West Virginia with an assist from the Betmix Angler database.

Charles Town Race 1 | 7:00 pm ET
#5 Zio Lorenzo (12-1 morning line odds) has a longshot look. Trainer Vanessa Pletroche’s barn has gone 9: 3-3-0 since July 11 at Charles Town, including 14-1 and 26-1 runners in the exacta. Big prices no stranger to this gelding as he popped a 55-1 upset in late June from a tough post in a time fast enough to play with most of these. Win-place bet #5. Exacta key-box 5 with 4,7. Picks: 5-4-7

Charles Town Race 9 | 10:45 pm ET
#6 Palm Island (5-2 morning line odds) makes a rider change from a 7-pound apprentice to ace 4-1/2 furlong dash pilot Jeiron Barbosa (colony-best 30% on the year from 70 mounts). The jockey is 6-for-12 this year teamed with trainer Anthony Farrior at the dash distance. Veteran gelding should benefit from a race over the track and at the unique distance. Win bet #6. Picks: 6-5-3

        Scott Shapiro: Saratoga Spot Plays

        July 29, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

The final week of racing in July continues on Thursday afternoon with an eight-race card now that the featured Glens Falls (G2) has been moved to Sunday afternoon. The card commences at 1:10 PM eastern. Here are a couple of horses I like most on the day.

        Race 4:
He will not be a big price to kick off the Thursday Pick 6, but #5 Preside should be tough to beat in this seven-horse field of MSW foes going 1 1/8-miles over the main track. The $1.5M OBS April ’25 purchase was off to a very slow start on debut before making a middle move and tiring late going seven-furlongs on June 7. Trainer Steve Asmussen brought the Tiz the Law colt back just 20 days later in Louisville to make his first two-turn start and he moved forward significantly. Not only did Preside show far more gate speed than he did in his first start, but ran very well overall to finish second beaten just half a length. He has three local works since, retains the services of Irad Ortiz Jr., and should beat this group with a repeat of his run at Churchill Downs a month ago over the off track.

        Play: #5 Preside (7-5 ML)
        Picks: 5-1-6

        Race 6:
My next play comes in this open $30k claimer over the main track where I do not trust the ML favorites. #2 Run Classic’s best races crush this field, but I have major concerns about where the 8YO is at this point of his career. He moves into the Joe Sharp barn and drops in class in his first start since late May, but is likely to take too much public support. #3 Pair of Socks also drops in class off the freshening for Linda Rice. He was consistent this winter/spring at Aqueduct hitting the board in all five starts, but earned just one win to show for it. Plus, Rice is off to a chilly start to the summer, especially over the dirt. The veteran conditioner is just 3 for 38 heading into action on Wednesday dating back to the start of the meeting for a $0.53 ROI making this one tough to get excited about at his 2-1-ML offering.

I will try to get the jump on them both with New York-bred #5 Factually Correct. The son of Tourist was claimed out of his last race by low profile trainer Roshan Samshunder. The new connections leg up Kendrick Carmouche after watching the gelding get caught in chase mode in a race where the two speeds dominated from start-to-finish on July 9. Carmouche should have no issue getting this one into the race and is probably the horse that moves up most over a potential off track. Hopefully, it propels him to his first career victory at the Spa.

Play: #5 Factually Correct (9-2 ML)
        Picks: 5-2-4

          #5
          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Del Mar - Race #2
#4 Baytown Butterfly She drops off a flat run, but she also loses the blinkers which could help her get back to something a little closer to what I think might be deceptively good form so far this year against better. Lots to like on the front end of the Pick-4.
#9 Shop Til You Drop I'm a little wary here -- the barn has been cold to open the season and she's finding a deeper group today, but it also feels like she's heading in the right direction. Probably has some upside in the second start back.
#1 Stay In Line She makes a lot of sense with one of her better tries but she could be in for a tricky trip with some horses with similar running styles likely to line up outside of her.
Race Summary Baytown Butterfly gets some class relief while getting back on the track without blinkers, giving her some rebound potential. I also like that she can get past horses in a race with a few chasing types
          Del Mar - Race #7
#3 Miss Kona She has been pretty sharp through three starts -- two races in which she chased Mohaven, and her graduation run sandwiched in between. Think she's a decent talent and that this will prove to be a good starting point for the next phase of her career.
#7 The Loan Exchange She should be a nice number while stepping up to try winners on the main after getting put up for a win via DQ on the turf at first asking, but I think she might get a decent kind of trip while spying the speed if she likes the main track. Upside.
#10 Syntax She's probably supposed to be tough after just missing in open stakes company last time out, but I wonder how much of an outlier that was compared to her typical form. She's the right one if you trust her to run back to her last. I'm not sure.
Race Summary I think pretty highly of Miss Kona, so I'm hoping Syntax will help keep the price playable. 'Kona needs a little bit of pace help, but there are a few pressing/chasing types lined up. Along late to land it?
          Del Mar - Race #8
#5 Storm Lady Mostly mild form on her page, but she showed a little bit of life in the last one when getting in for a tag for the first time. There are a couple of solid names on her page, and she might find this crew to her liking at a midrange price.
#9 Velvet Reign She tracked the pace and went flat in the lane in her American debut, but she was facing better that day off the bench and has some reasonable room to come forward in the second start of the season.
#12 Greys Over Bays She'll try a route run for the first time if she gets in, but I think she has the kind of grinding form that might play well enough at this longer trip. Price appeal.
Race Summary Some fun places to look for prices in the finale, and Storm Lady should be a playable one. She isn't meeting any standout droppers, and she seems like one of the players if she's ready to fire off the layoff for a barn that does good work with these types.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Woodbine - Race #1
#8 ARMADA RISING (5-2) One-mile races, recent works, class drop bode well if she handles Tapeta track.
#7 TAKE CHANCES (6-1) Troubled third going long in seasonal debut but 1-30 record hard to overlook.
#1 CHARGETHATMOUNTAIN (3-1) Has speed and rail and returns to level of claim.
Race Summary ARMADA RISING, a lightly-raced 5-year-old, was no factor in a comeback allowance to begin her season. But she broke her maiden at one mile on the turf with first-time Lasix, was in winning contention in a follow-up try at Gulfstream Park last Spring and continues to work well in the mornings here. Bet to win and place and play 8-1 and 8-7 exactas.
            Woodbine - Race #2
#1 AVA’S PRINCESS (3-1) Sat good trip, won going away in nw/2 win at this level, taken to repeat.
#5 SILICIUM (5-2) Pounced on fast pace to win grass sprint, gets in light off another :35-4/5 workout.
#3 SCARY SPEEDY (6-1) Carried speed to easy win at 5-1/2F off layoff, takes catching in third start of cycle.
Race Summary AVA’S PRINCESS won a pair of short sprints at Woodbine in her last four starts, met several follow-up winners in between and should be in the winning mix again if she repeats her winning, low-60 Beyer speed figures. Bet to win and place and play 1-3 and 1-5 exactas.
            Woodbine - Race #5
#4 MIKELLE (2-1) Seeks return to 2025 turf form on another switch to another high-percentage barn.
#5 NORTH YORK (5-2) Leads for as far as she goes in repeat attempt in third start of cycle.
#3 PROPHETIC DEBBY (6-1) Can’t seem to avoid wide trips, cleaner break in short field would help.
Race Summary MIKELLE, beat a combined 30-3/4 lengths in two gapped-out starts on Tapeta, appears an all-or-nothing type play on another barn switch. She rallied for minor awards in three turf routes at Woodbine last year with an average 73 Beyer. She enters a red-hot barn that is on a 5-for-16 run with similar layoff types. Bet to win and place and play a 4/3, 5/ALL trifecta.

                  Delaware Park - Race #1 - Post: 12:20pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $20,000 Class Rating: 70

                  Rating:

                  #6 ROZZYROO (ML=4/1)
                  #3 VINO BELLA (ML=7/2)
                  #2 BARBADOS BULLDOG (ML=8/1)

ROZZYROO - A wise man taught me to play the lone speed horse. Take a look at this horse. Taking a trip down the class scale; has the ability to make her presence felt. VINO BELLA - When Gonzalez and Simone partner up on animals the ROI has been great at +51. When a sprinter is back in a race less than 10 days after her last outing, it generally means she's fit. BARBADOS BULLDOG - This equine didn't run well in the mud in her last race at Laurel. You should discount that showing. Ranks uppermost in earnings per start. A strong performance in this race can add to the lifetime earnings.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #7 SUNSET EXPRESS (ML=5/2), #4 STYLISH GEM (ML=6/1), #5 MISS RAUCUS (ML=8/1),

SUNSET EXPRESS - This morning-line choice hasn't been to the track in awhile. No works since last race. STYLISH GEM - This filly raced well above average on Jun 17th winding up second, but hasn't even visited the track since then. Not really a good sign. Mediocre speed fig last time around the track at Delaware Park at 6 furlongs. Don't think this questionable contender will improve too much today. MISS RAUCUS - This filly is always hitting the board, but just doesn't finish first. Difficult to wager on her on the front end. Registered a quite unimpressive rating last time around the track in a $7,500 Claiming race on June 30th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that number.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - VINO BELLA - This filly takes a big tumble in the class figure department from a rating of 78 down to 70. Strong contender.

                    # 6 TAKING CANDY 4/5
HUNT MASTER looks to be a quite good contender. Looks strong versus this group of horses and will almost certainly be one of the front-runners. The speed rating of 106 from his most recent affair looks competitive in here. Bettors should probably take a good look at this one as this gelding has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this field. VERSUS - Appears to be the type to be helped with second time Lasix here. Win percentage with this rider and trainer combo - 18 percent - strong. TAKING CANDY - He has garnered very strong figs under today's conditions and should fare well against this group of horses. Players ought to take a good look at this one as this gelding has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this field.

                      # 9 BOLTAGE 7/2
I lean toward UNBEATABLE here. Has to be given a chance based on the very good speed rating posted in the last competition. He should definitely be given consideration given the very good speed figures. This racer has a wonderful winning percentage in turf sprints. UTOPIAN - Is a definite contender - given the 87 speed fig from his most recent race. BOLTAGE - Has been racing in the most competitive company of the group of animals lately. No strangers to the winner's circle, Jacobson and Bejarano will almost certainly have this horse breaking away from the field.

                        Evangeline Downs - Race #7 - Post: 7:57pm - Optional Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $42,000 Class Rating: 95

                        Rating:

                        #8 SOUNDS LIKE POWER (ML=3/1)
                        #6 CHAD'S FLASHY WAYS (ML=20/1)

SOUNDS LIKE POWER - I think this gelding could run back to his winning race from March 1st, when he won a $35,000 Optional Claiming race, a higher class than today's race. The latest figure of 92 is the best last race fig in the bunch. CHAD'S FLASHY WAYS - Has happened upon a good situation this time.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #1 ASTROLOGYSPROTEGE (ML=5/2), #9 NINTH WARD BOBBY O (ML=7/2), #4 COSMIC TRAIN (ML=6/1),

ASTROLOGYSPROTEGE - The morning-line favorite is vulnerable here with the lack of morning blow outs. NINTH WARD BOBBY O - This gelding has already been defeated as the public's choice twice in a row. Hard to give him another chance. The speed figure last out doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class rating of today's contest. Mark this animal as a questionable challenger. COSMIC TRAIN - Last ran on Jul 10th at Evangeline Downs, finishing fifth. Unlikely to perk up off of that try in today's event. Today's contest is 6 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a short distance race in the last sixty days. Not the best of omens. Tough to go with this questionable contender at 6 furlongs after not displaying zip at 1 mile. This mount ran a most unsatisfactory speed rating in the last race. He shouldn't improve and will probably lose in today's race running that number.
