      Scott Shapiro: Saratoga Spot Plays

      July 31, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

The racing week in New York continues on this week with a ten-race card on Friday afternoon where once again they will be off the turf. The slate is headlined by the $250k Amsterdam (G2) featuring some of the country’s fastest 3YO sprinters traveling 6.5-fulrongs. Here are a few horses I like most, including my thoughts on the feature.

      Race 6:
The first horse I like comes in this state-bred MSW event for 2YOs at six-furlongs where only one runner in the full field of juveniles enters with racing experience. #1 Freedom Charge ran on June 19 where he was outsprinted early and outrun throughout in a four-horse race at Aqueduct. The experience cannot be overstated, but he draws the rail and is unlikely to get overlooked despite little running on debut. So, I will look to a few first-time starters instead. #5 Maximilian and 5-2-ML favorite #6 Yestahal intrigue, but I landed on #7 Mindfield in the end. The son of Mind Control sold for a whopping $700k at the OBS April sale, which is wild considering he stands for just $8k. Trainer Mark Casse legs up Flavien Prat for this colt’s debut. I expect a big run at first asking for the John Oxley owned runner.

      Play: #7 Mindfield (4-1)
      Picks: 7-5-6

      Race 7:
My next play comes in this optional claimer at 1 1/8-miles over the main track where I will ride the hot hand of #1 Metatron’s Muse. The son of Flatter has been both popular at the claim box of late, as well as a regular visitor to the winner’s circle. The 6YO gelding has rattled off two consecutive victories against open company claimers, including a win over this surface and distance back on Opening Day of the summer meeting when jockey Jose Ortiz broke well, took Metatron’s Muse in hand, saved ground early, and angled out to earn the victory late. With an honest pace likely, Ortiz should be able to work out a similar trip on the class hike at a playable price in his first start off the claim for owner/trainer Mertkan Kantarmaci.

      Play: #1 Metatron’s Muse (6-1 ML)
      Picks: 1-3-6

      Race 9: Amsterdam (G2)
It will be interesting to see how the three ML favorites perform in their first start back since being blitzed by Englishman in the Woody Stephens (G1). 7-5-ML favorite #7 Obliteration and #4 Gilded Bandit finished a non-threatening third and fourth, while #3 Solitude Dude battled inside the eventual winner early before having his heart ripped out before they hit the lane. Of the three, I am most concerned by how Solitude Dude will run. The promising Yaupon colt had won 4 of 5 prior to his first Grade 1 start, but was beaten like a drum and returns to the races for a barn that struggled to win in July at the Spa.

Obliteration and Gilded Bandit are likely to run their races, but will not provide strong enough value, so I will try the lightly-raced #2 Local Knowledge. The Spendthrift Farm colt ran big on debut against a live group of maidens at Keeneland last fall, but was scratched from his next start in Florida and remained on the sidelines all the way until June 6 where he disappointed as the 2-1-favorite in a first-level allowance over this same surface and distance. It stands to reason that the $625k OBS April ’25 purchase needed the race off the layoff and may have been fortunate to avoid Englishman and Crude Velocity during the early part of the campaign. He should find a favorable forward position under Johnny V and hopefully show the stamina he did at first asking in his third lifetime try.

Play: #2 Local Knowledge (5-1 ML)
      Picks: 2-7-4

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Spot Plays

        July 31, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

Yonkers Raceway starts the weekend with a 10-race card. Tonight's Spot Plays are in Race 4, Race 5, and Race 10. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 4 (7:45 PM EDT)

5-Jensville A (5-1)-Lightly raced 7-year-old does good work at YR (7-4-1-1). Comes off a gate to wire score against this kind on 6-17. Brent Holland steered that night and is between the pipes again. Could get the top and not look back. Should be no worse than in the pocket after the opening turn.

        Playing #5 Jensville to Win

        5-3-4

        Race 5 (8:05 PM EDT)

7-Twin B Echo (20-1)-Makes the 3rd start in the Laterza barn and raced evenly in the 1st race to come a close 2nd after missing a start. Last time, put in a no-move mile leaving from post 7 and now will look for an aggressive drive from Brent Holland. Did come the back half in 55.1, and could pop at a price if lands in a good seat off the gate.

Using Twin B Echo in a Win Bet

        7-2-6

        Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

4-Big Charlie Moran (9/2)-This is a bottom condition and fittingly this field don't like to win. Charlie grinded it out last time, lost by less than a length and cashed a 3rd place check. This will be the 2nd race at YR since shipping in from M1, Colin Kelly sticks and could offer a square price. They went to the half in 59.1 last time, will look for more lively fractions, and this race could set up differently.

Playing #4 Big Charlie Moran to Win

        4-6-8

Delaware Park Pick 4/Friday, July 31

          July 31, 2026 | By Frank Carulli

          Delaware Park Pick 4
          Friday, July 31

Set the alarm clock early and wake up with Delaware Park’s Pick 4 in mind this Friday, July 31. The action begins shortly after noon on the East Coast or during breakfast time elsewhere. The 2-year-olds will take center stage, with three maiden races in the sequence. It’s a difficult sequence but should be rewarding to those who solve the 50-cent wager.

Delaware Park 1st Race (12:20 p.m. EST)If nothing else, BEFUDDLED could prove just that for handicappers. She is by Bolt D’Oro, the No. 11-ranked 2-year-old sire in 2026, but her dam and the dam’s siblings were winless. The swing factor is in her favor – trainer Anthony Farrior is 12-for-51 with debut MSW runners since 2024. GYPSY LULLABY rallied into photo-finish view in her 4-1/2F debut, then chased two well-meant firsters from top barns and held third at 6F last out. She gets in light-weighted and should be well-suited to 5-1/2F today.

Delaware Park 2nd Race (12:52 p.m. EST)NAZEER was ‘reluctant to load’ but held his own in Maiden Special Weight company. UNIQUENESS adds blinkers after an improved second start for top trainer Jamie Ness. DIMINUTO BURRITO took money but got away slowly against Uniqueness. Several others hail from reliable first-out barns. It’s an ‘ALL’ punch in the second leg of the Pick 4.

Delaware Park 3rd Race (1:24 p.m. EST)MEGAN’S HONOR is 8/2-1-2 with an average 65 Beyer in eight sprints on a fast track this year. He won easily in his only try at the $5,000 level and the 9-year-old was re-claimed by trainer Michael Simone in April. He is the top choice in here but will need a top effort in a field that is a combined 242/43-42-47 with average earnings of $207,814. FLOAT ON won from on and off the pace on muddy tracks in his last two starts at this level, earning a spot on the ticket.

Delaware Park 4th Race (1:54 p.m. EST)The three entrants with bullet gate works this month land a spot on the Pick 4 ticket in what appears a wide-open Maiden Special Weight sprint. BEST DEAL, away last and unhurried to the turn, gathered momentum and finished determinedly while no threat to a pair of 2-to-1 first-time starters. He broke better from the gate in two workouts leading to his debut. He should retain good betting value and the extra half-furlong should help. I GOT STREET SENSE also worked a bullet from the Delaware gate in his final debut prep. His dam, Graceful Ginger (24/6-6-6, $344k), was a multiple stakes-placed sprinter with three wire-to-wire allowance victories. COACH CRISTOBAL’S :48-2/5 work was fastest-of-42 on the July 21 tab. Trainer Michael Catalano Jr. won with three of his last seven first-time starters at 47-1, 5-1 and 5-1 odds.

          Suggested 50-Cent Pick 4
          DEL 1st Race: 2, 7
          DEL 2nd Race: ALL
          DEL 3rd Race: 2, 5
          DEL 4th Race: 2, 3, 4
          Cost for a 50-Cent ticket: $54

Jeremy Plonk: Del Mar Spot Plays | Friday, July 31, 2026

            July 30, 2026 | By Jeremy Plonk

Del Mar dashes toward the weekend with Friday’s feature being the 7-furlong $150,000 Real Good Deal Stakes for Cal-breds. Kentucky Derby alum Pavlovian, the Sunland Derby winner and head runner-up in the Louisiana Derby, returns to the west coast in that one. He’ll meet Golden State Juvenile winner Ocean Bear and Cal Cup Derby winner Start the Ride. Give Pavlovian the slight lean there, but we’ve got some more appealing opinions and prices on the program.

The card boasts carryovers in the pick 6 ($31,078) beginning in Race 3 and the super hi 5 ($16,031) on the Race 8 finale.

Each day this summer at Del Mar, I’ll be handicapping the action with my top plays on the card – including full-card selections for a featured program each week (this week’s full-card will be Saturday).

Del Mar: Race 1 | 5:00 pm ET
#4 I’m Otter Here (6-1 morning line odds) was strong in both SoCal turf sprints since coming west to Brian Koriner and didn’t embarrass himself in a pair of miles most recently. Freshened, sharpened with fast, short works and cuts back in trip. Barn off to a great start at meet (5-10 in exacta) and note 4-7 in the trifecta with horses 5-1 or more, so it’s not about short prices. Hector Berrios riding turf as well as any right now locally. Win bet #4. Daily Double 4-4. Picks 4-1-3-5

Del Mar: Race 2 | 5:31 pm ET
#4 Tate Batz (5-1 morning line odds) looks to continue not only the hot start to the meet for Doug O’Neill, but also his sire Pavel – an amazing 7: 5-1-0 with runners at Del Mar the first 2 weeks on dirt. This filly ran second over the track in her November debut and was competitive against open-company claimers when last seen in May. Should fit with these. Win bet #4. Exacta key-box 4 with 5,7. Picks 4-5-7

Del Mar: Race 8 | 8:32 pm ET
#6 Volcanologist (8-1 morning line odds) has improved in each start, moved up on grass and could really move up with the move to Del Mar and around 2 turns. Sire Collected is a Del Mar turf dynamo with 29% local winners in recent years coming into the meet and a 30% positive ROI – and dam broke her maiden on the Del Mar lawn in 2020. Damsire Richard’s Kid screams distance. Win bet #6. Picks 6-5-3

              #7
              Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

              Del Mar - Race #4
#1 Simple Song He was second to Stronghold in the Triple Bend last out, and I think something like that kind of effort might fit with this crew if he can work out the trip with some speed from the fence.
#3 Hejazi He should be right up on the pace throughout and is another with some sharp names in the company lines. Guess his best stuff is supposed to win this, but he's meeting a couple of decent ones in this small group off the bench.
#5 March of Time He has some class to prove against some of these, but I think the comeback run inspired enough confidence that he's still got some talent, and he can presumably move forward off that run off the long break.
Race Summary Not sure we get all of that 5/1 ML offering on the fence, but Simple Song looks capable of landing this if he can avoid a tricky forward trip from the inside in a spot with a couple other forward players.
              Del Mar - Race #7
#4 Lit Big class test for him here off the Los Al debut score, but he did it the way he was supposed to at 7/5 against 10 others, and I wonder if some reasonable upside here would keep him in the picture. Talent might be there.
#1 Courtside Action Nothing wrong with the two blowout wins so far, and he earned this chance to try better for what will likely be the first real test of his career. There's not a ton of super serious early burn in here, so he could be dangerous if he shakes free at any point.
#8 Pavlovian His good fortune ran out after the Louisiana Derby, as he was up the track in the Kentucky Derby and Matt Winn in his two most recent starts. Obviously he's getting some real class relief here, but it's not like he was drilling Cal-breds before those two good open-company races. Not sure.
Race Summary Lit looked good winning at first asking, and that light body of work might help keep the price playable in a race with several with appeal, including a handful drawn outside that aren't even listed above -- #9 He's a Knockout, #10 Ocean Bear, and #11 Start the Ride all have form and could have just as easily ended up on top as ending up as footnotes here. Fun race. Take your pick.
              Del Mar - Race #8
#6 Volcanologist Tactical sprinter stretches out for the first time in a field without any committed pace types, so I could see her getting a really nice run of things right up on the splits here. Pedigree hints she'll handle it.
#1 Janz Joy She took a bit of cash in the debut run and then went evenly, but that leaves her with some upside into the second start today. She makes intuitive sense, but I'm not super enthusiastic. For a share?
#2 Latin Air He was in for a tag last out but ran fairly well when going long, and that at least gives him some proven route form in a race that lacks it.
Race Summary Volcanologist gets a pretty solid lean here for me, as she's got the speed to sit up close early in a race without much zip, and I'm not sure who you're supposed to be afraid of in here.

                Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                Monmouth Park - Race #2
#1 BLUE MOON TIDE (5-2) No match for streaking winner, can strike from up close in this field on her best.
#6 BASHFUL BABY (8-5) Fresh off maiden victory for red-hot claim barn, main track the question.
#2 DERBY HANGOVER (5-2) Kept 1-to-5 favorite at bay to break maiden in second start as a 5-year-old.
Race Summary BLUE MOON TIDE won going away the last time she ran on a fast track at Monmouth and worked in :48 flat here last week. She faded on a sloppy track and on the turf in her last two starts, but did so at the expense of La Resolana (4-6, $129k), who won again on the class rise, and One Fine Wine, a next-out 4-1/4-length winner at the $15,000 level. Bet to win and place and play 1-2 and 1-6 exactas.
                Monmouth Park - Race #3
#4 ORATOR (3-1) Found rail opening to win in longer grass route race that came back strong.
#5 KAUAI BREEZE (5-1) Ran behind three next-out winners with sub-par try in February on synthetic track.
#3 ROSCOMMON (4-1) Improving and class-rising 3-year-old just missed with rail rally off layoff.
Race Summary ORATOR came out at the break but saved ground and found a rail opening in the stretch to rally through for the win. The class hike should be well within reach, considering his seven rivals last out equaled or improved on their top Beyer speed figure, three by 10 points or more. Bet to win and place and play a 3-4-5 exacta box.
                Monmouth Park - Race #4
#1 T L FROM E K (5-2) Sprinted clear, wilted late after winning fave came calling, wears blinkers today.
#2 TIME TO GROOVE (2-1) Rallied 4-wide past top one and galloped out well for 36-percent second-out barn.
#9 SUN TAN MAN (6-1) Dam was a multiple stakes-winning sprinter at Monmouth for the same trainer.
Race Summary T L FROM E K ran to his fast workouts and opened a clear lead in his debut at this distance, only to be overpowered by the even-money favorite who had a race under his belt. He adds blinkers and draws the rail with a new rider today. Bet to win and place and play 1-2 and 1-9 exactas.

                      Charles Town - Race #4 - Post: 8:32pm - Optional Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $29,800 Class Rating: 95

                      Rating:

                      #3 YULETIDE GALLOP (ML=6/1)
                      #2 UNCLE CAT (ML=6/1)

YULETIDE GALLOP - This horse has the speed, and no one may be able to keep up with him. When a pony drops at least 5 lbs (like this one is), you must take notice. It may not seem like much, but could make the difference. UNCLE CAT - Based on this gelding's recent efforts, he should profit from this contest's shorter distance. Have to believe this pace horse has a nice chance on this bullring of a track. A quick move out of the gate, and this one gets position. I just may give this one a chance. Should rebound off last race where he did run out of the money, but was within five lengths at the end.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #1 CHANCE (ML=5/2), #6 BURLSWORTH (ML=3/1), #4 YOUTHINKTHATSFUNNY (ML=7/2),

CHANCE - 5/2 is not offering enough value for any horse in a sprint of 6 1/2 furlongs that hasn't finished in the money in a sprint event recently. This gelding raced surprisingly well on Jul 10th placing third, but hasn't even visited the track since then. Not really a good sign. Recent declining speed figs of 84/80/75 give a clue that this horse may be going off form. BURLSWORTH - This runner ran a most unsatisfactory speed figure last out. He shouldn't run better and will probably get beat in today's race running that fig. YOUTHINKTHATSFUNNY - You think this horse is going to be victorious just because he's always close. Just doesn't win often.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - YULETIDE GALLOP - This horse has the speed and the post required on this bullring to run to the lead and never look back.

CEDERBERG looks to be a quite good contender. This selection will feel the med change - with second time Lasix today. Has to be carefully examined based on the very strong speed fig earned in the last race.

                          # 5 GALLERIA 2/1
AURATA seems to be the bet in here. Tough to pass on this filly with Fernandez in the saddle. Fernandez will most likely be able to get this filly to break out sharply in this race. Going in a dirt sprint race gives this filly a competitive shot. ANAILA MARIEL - Lisboa has a solid 19 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface. Must be considered given the class of races run recently. GALLERIA - This filly obviously likes the distance, going 2 for 8 in her races recently.

                            Rating:

                            #3 TORIADOR (ML=3/1)

                            #2 WHATWOMENWANT (ML=10/1)

TORIADOR - When Asencio and Palma unite on equines the return on investment has been fantastic at +88. Palma brings him back again. I propose you stay with this live gelding. AWESOME CRUSADER - You have to consider the solid works of late. This gelding is in fine physical condition, having run a strong race on Jul 10th, finishing first. This gelding garnered a nice fig of 89 in his last event. That speed rating should be high enough to triumph this time out. WHATWOMENWANT - The morning line odds on this gelding are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of handler Anderson. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins.

                            Vulnerable Contenders: #1 PUTTINGONTHEFOIL (ML=4/5), #4 HORATIO (ML=6/1),

PUTTINGONTHEFOIL - Not a perfect 'spot' in this event. HORATIO - Difficult to bet on at 6/1 odds after the two most recent efforts. The Brain always warns me to keep away from horses in sprint events that haven't hit the board in sprint contests lately.
