Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets

Boston Bruins at Dallas Stars (150, 5.5)

The red-hot Bruins have won seven straight, outscoring opponents by an incredible 32-8 margin. The defending Cup champs lead the NHL in goals scored and fewest goals allowed.

They won 10 straight in November and the way they’re playing, it looks like they’ll match that soon.

“We're playing with a lot of desperation, a lot of jump," captain Zdeno Chara said. "We're capitalizing on chances we're creating and we're just taking what's given to us."

Goalies Tim Thomas and Ruukka Rask have been dominant, another bad sign for Dallas. The Stars are trying to shake off a 4-1 home loss to Columbus in which they went 0 for 3 on the power play.

Dallas, which has lost four of six, saw captain Brenden Morrow leave Thursday’s game after he got hit by a puck in the knee. His status for the game is uncertain.

                            Pick: Bruins

Colorado Avalanche at Anaheim Ducks (-117, 5.5)

The Avs are 3-13 in their last 16 visits to Anaheim, and they’re 10-25 in their last 35 road games.

The Ducks have won six straight in the series and nine of the last 10.

Colorado likely will be without forward Matt Duchene, who underwent an MRI on his injured knee Friday. Duchene got hurt Thursday night during Colorado’s 3-2 win over Phoenix.

Duchene appeared to get his right skate caught in a rut while making a hit.

                            Pick: Ducks

College funds: Saturday's best NCAAB bets

Virginia Tech at Oklahoma State (-1, 125.5)

These teams played in the consolation finals of the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York. The Hokies won 59-57 as Erick Green scored 18 and Dorian Finney-Smith had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Markel Brown had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Cowboys.

Unfortunately for OSU, the game was a harbinger. They’ve continued to struggle offensively, and rank 262nd nationally in shooting percentage (41.1).

The Hokies enter 10-3, with losses to top-ranked Syracuse, at Minnesota and against Kansas State.

The Cowboys have lost three of four to fall to 7-5. They do own a 38-game non-conference home winning streak, the third-longest in school history. But that streak ends here.

                              Pick: Virginia Tech

Utah Utes at Colorado Buffaloes (-16.5, 133)

Coming off a 92-34 destruction of New Orleans on Wednesday, the Buffaloes are brimming with confidence heading into their Pac-12 opener against Utah.

Carlon Brown’s 18 points led five players in double figures as Colorado (8-4) won its third straight and posted its largest margin of victory since the 2005-06 season. Brown played three years at Utah before transferring in the summer of 2010, so he’ll be extra motivated for this one.

The Utes (3-7) are one of the worst offensive teams around, ranking 324th in scoring (58.8) and 296th in 3-point shooting percentage (29.6). And they allow opponents to shoot 47.5 percent, which ranks 320th.

In addition, two starting guards have been unable to practice fully. Chris Hines is still nursing the broken bone in his left thumb, and guard Cedric Martin is dealing with plantar fasciitis.

                              Pick: Colorado
