Senior Handicapper Matt Rivers of OffshoreInsiders.com has a free pick Tuesday on Wisconsin (-6.5) to Michigan State.
Reasoning: The Badgers somehow just lost at home to Iowa as the 17 or so point favorite. I have no earthly idea how that could have happened and will just chalk it up to one of those things. Pretty much every team in every sport will lay an egg in a season and I see that defeat being just that, a big fat rotten egg. Bo Ryan certainly had his team’s attention in practice leading up to today and I expect nothing less than another great defensive effort making points hard to come by for the young Spartans.
Tom Izzo is one of the best coaches in the country and after losing to great teams in North Carolina and Duke in the first few games the coach has settled his team down leading to the current 13-2 record. Draymond Green has been a total beast and Keith Appling is pretty good as well. I’m not saying that State isn’t a quality squad that won’t compete tonight because they can play some defense as well and keep this thing close. But winning in Madison for a visitor is a monumental task, I guess unless you are Iowa the other day, and I don’t see lightning striking twice.
Jordan Taylor, Jared Berggren and Ryan Evans should lead the way as they usually do and I expect it to be the defense which really steps up limiting Sparty. Before the loss to the Hawkeyes Ryan’s squad allowed 40, 45, 33, 54, 51 and 42 points in the previous six games and it’s not at all as if that is a fluke. The Badgers even won their first five games of the season only allowing 31, 41, 33, 31 and 43 points. Those teams certainly were early season cupcakes but the numbers are still extremely gaudy. The bottom line is that Wisconsin is always a phenomenal defensive team and this season is more of the same, save that last 72-65 loss to Iowa.
The best player on the court should once again be Taylor as the Badger point guard is great. Because he is on a semi slow down grind it out offense people don’t realize how good this guy really is. But I am confident whenever Taylor has the ball in his hands and that is most of the time.
It’s not going to be easy covering a decent enough number, which this is, against a hot and pretty good team, but after that last defeat and being in one of the best home courts in the nation I’ll take my chances eating a handful and watching that Wiscy defense do its thing.
