Saturday's Betting Tips: Mavs On ATS Streak vs. Bad Teams
    By Covers

    WHO'S HOT

NBA: The Mavs are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games vs. teams with a winning percentage below .400.

NBA: The under is 7-2 in the last nine Trail Blazers-Pistons games in Detroit.

NHL: The Stars are 21-7 in their last 28 meetings with Minnesota.

NCAAB: The road team is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 Towson-George Mason meetings.

NCAAB: The home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six Kansas State-Oklahoma State games.

    WHO'S NOT

NBA: The Nets are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 home games.

NBA: The Kings are 2-6 ATS in their last eight visits to Memphis.

NHL: The Lightning are 6-22 in their last 28 road games.

NCAAB: Oregon is 1-6 ATS in its last seven home games.

NCAAB: Duquesne is 3-8 ATS in its last 11 conference games.

    KEY STAT

15.5 – That’s how many turnovers Tennessee has averaged over its last four games heading into Saturday’s home game against No. 11 Connecticut. Forward Jeronne Maymon has contributed heavily to the problem, committing 13 turnovers in that stretch.

    INJURIES THAT SHOULDN'T BE OVERLOOKED

New York Giants tight end Jake Ballard had medication injected into his knee and is questionable for Sunday's playoff game at San Francisco. Ballard has swelling in the knee, but insists he's not concerned and will be "ready to go." Wideout Hakeem Nicks rolled his ankle in Friday's practice but is probable.

Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki has hit 11 of 30 shots the past two games as he continues to have trouble bending his right knee. He has been wearing a protective sleeve over the knee after spraining it last season. In addition, Vince Carter is expected to miss Saturday’s game in New Orleans with a sprained left foot.

    GAME OF THE DAY

No. 5 Missouri Tigers at No. 3 Baylor Bears (-4.5, 147.5)

    NOTABLE QUOTABLE

"The game ain't hard to him. It's like 'The Matrix,' where it slows down. It's poetry when you see it from that angle…It's a chess match, because he understands every coverage, he understands every defense. And if you give it away too early, then the game is like checkers for him." – Ravens LB Ray Lewis on Patriots QB Tom Brady. New England is a 7-point home favorite in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game.

    TIPS AND NOTES

If Michigan State is to break its two-game losing streak to Purdue on Saturday, the Spartans need more from small forward Branden Dawson. He’s scored in single digits the last six games and had no rebounds in the loss to Michigan on Tuesday. “Branden has got to pick it up a little bit,“ coach Tom Izzo told CBSSports.com. "He wasn’t starry-eyed in that game. He just didn’t go as hard as he needed to.”

Charlotte Bobcats rookie Bismack Biyombo moves from power forward to center starting with Saturday’s game against Chicago. Biyombo is coming off his best game, an 11-point, 10-rebound effort in a loss to the Magic. He also had four blocks and nine defensive rebounds in a matchup with Dwight Howard. Biyombo will back up Byron Mullens and get a lot more minutes than he would have at forward. "I was playing him at the power forward spot and I had so many guys there," coach Paul Silas said. "But now he's going to be my backup center. He's going to play there from here on in. He and Byron will share that spot and Byron will start and Bismack will come off the bench." Silas considers the 6-9 Biyombo the toughest player on the team.

Notre Dame hosts No. 1 Syracuse on Saturday evening hoping to break out of a brutal long-range shooting slump. The Irish are shooting 26 percent (35 of 155) from beyond the arc in Big East play. Coach Mike Brey plans to start guard Pat Connaughton to get more 3-point firepower, but it’s not like he’s tearing it up either. He’s hitting 31.5 percent (17 of 54) on 3-pointers.

                    Preview: Marquette at Providence
                    By Covers

No. 22 Marquette Golden Eagles at Providence Friars (6, 143)

THE STORY: No. 22 Marquette looks to pick up its first Big East road win when it travels to face struggling Providence. The Golden Eagles have gone 4-0 at home in conference play but dropped their first two away games by a combined 10 points at then-No. 9 Georgetown and No. 1 Syracuse earlier this month. The Friars have lost five of six, including a 78-55 setback at Syracuse on Jan. 14.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sports32 (Milwaukee & Green Bay), SNY (New York, Hartford), MASN (Washington D.C.), Brighthouse (Tampa, Orlando), MASN (Baltimore), FS Ohio (Cincinnati), Time Warner (Buffalo), Cox (Providence), Time Warner (Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton, Utica, Elmira, Watertown), WHVL (Johnston), ESPN Full Court, ESPN3.com

ABOUT MARQUETTE (15-4, 4-2 Big East): The Golden Eagles' outside-inside combo of guard Darius Johnson-Odom (18.2 points) and senior forward Jae Crowder (16.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.2 steals) lead a balanced offense that is second in the Big East behind Syracuse in scoring (76.6 points) and leads the league in assists (17.4). Marquette is extremely disciplined considering its fast pace, ranking near the top of the conference in turnover margin (plus-3.8) and assist-turnover ratio (1.3). The Golden Eagles are 12-0 this season when junior point guard Junior Cadougan (5.4 assists) dishes out six or more assists.

ABOUT PROVIDENCE (12-7, 1-5): The Friars rank among the Big East leaders in several defensive categories, including blocked shots (5.6, third) and opponent field goal percentage (39.4, fourth). The offense - 12th in the conference at 69.3 points - has been unable to produce consistently despite four players scoring in double figures, led by junior point guard Vincent Council (16.4 points, 7.1 assists off the bench) and sophomore guard Gerard Coleman (14.8 points). Freshman forward LaDontae Henton is fourth in the league with 8.9 rebounds per game.

                    TRENDS:
                    * Golden Eagles are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games following three or more consecutive home games.
                    * Friars are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 Saturday games.
                    * Under is 5-0 in Golden Eagles last 5 games as a road favorite of 0.5-6.5.
                    * Over is 5-1 in Friars last 6 games as a home underdog.
                    * Golden Eagles are 6-0 ATS in the last 6 meetings.

                    TIP-INS:

                    1. Marquette leads the series 10-4, with an 8-1 mark against the Friars since joining the Big East.

                    2. The Golden Eagles won both meetings last season by more than 20 points, but its last trip to Providence resulted in a narrow 82-79 victory in February 2010.

                    3. Providence sophomore guard Bryce Cotton leads the Big East in free-throw percentage (90.0) and minutes played (37.9).

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Clemson Tigers (-8.5, 119.5)

Something about Georgia Tech brings out the best in Clemson senior guards Andre Young and Tanner Smith.

They’ve combined to hit 28 of 49 from beyond the arc in their careers against the Yellow Jackets.

The Tigers enter on a three-game skid, but could have won all three had they shot better than 59.3 percent (35 of 59) from the foul line. Those losses came by a total of 12 points.

Tech should give a better effort than it did Thursday, when it was humiliated 70-38 at home by Virginia. But these Jackets are very limited offensively and must win the rebounding battle to have a chance. They were outrebounded 45-22 by the Cavaliers.

The favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings, and the home team is 7-3 ATS in the last 10.

                      PICK: Clemson

No. 22 Marquette Golden Eagles at Providence Friars (6, 143)

Marquette goes for its first Big East road win against the struggling Friars, who have lost five of six.

Forward Jae Crowder (16.2 ppg, 7.4 rpg) and guard Darius Johnson Odom (18.2 ppg) give the Golden Eagles one of the best inside-outside combos in the conference. Marquette ranks second in the Big East in scoring (76.6) and leads the league in assists (17.4).

The team is 12-0 when junior point guard Junior Cadougan (5.4 apg) dishes out six or more assists.

That fast-paced attack will be challenged by Providence, which holds opponents to 39.4 percent shooting.

While they’re not fearsome offensively, the Friars do have four players averaging in double figures.

The Golden Eagles easily swept both meetings last season, once at home and once in the Big East Tournament, by an average of 22.5 points. Marquette is 6-0 ATS in the last six meetings.

                      PICK: Marquette

Dallas Mavericks at New Orleans Hornets (5.5, 175)

With shooting guard Eric Gordon (21.0 ppg) still sidelined by a bruised right knee, the Hornets are reeling. They’ve lost six straight. They haven’t lost seven in a row since Chris Paul’s rookie season of 2006.

New Orleans is shooting an abysmal 27.5 percent on 3-pointers. Marco Belinelli is the only Hornet with at least 10 attempts who’s hitting more than 30 percent.

The Mavs beat Utah 94-91 on Thursday behind Shawn Marion’s season-high 22 points, winning for the first time in six road games against Western Conference foes.

"We're making steady progress," coach Rick Carlisle said. "But it is work. We've got to continue with it. It doesn't happen overnight."

When these teams met on Jan. 7 in Dallas, the Mavs covered as 11.5-point favorites, winning 96-81 as six players scored in double figures.

                        PICK: Dallas

Oklahoma City Thunder at New Jersey Nets (8.5, 202)

Fresh off signing a five-year, $80 million contract extension, Russell Westbrook gets to square off with Nets point guard Deron Williams. Westbrook averages 20.5 points, 5.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds for the Thunder, who owns the Western Conference’s best mark at 12-3.

The Nets got their first home win Wednesday, 107-100 over Golden State, thanks to a 24-point, 10-assist, 8-rebound night from Williams.

Oklahoma City, coming off a shocking loss to the Wizards, is 6-2 ATS after a SU loss and 6-0-1 ATS when playing on two days’ rest.

Despite Wednesday’s win, the Nets are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 home games.

                        PICK: Oklahoma City

Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils (-105, 5.5)

THE STORY: The line between playoff security and urgency is getting blurry for a lot of NHL teams, including the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils. The two Atlantic Division rivals will meet Saturday in the Garden State. Both the Flyers and Devils hold playoff positions, but the margin for error is slim. Saturday's contest will be the third of six meetings between the two teams this season. The Devils won the latest contest on Nov. 3 with a 4-3 victory in a shootout in Philadelphia. Captain Zach Parise and Patrik Elias scored in the decisive session, while Danny Briere replied for Philadelphia. Johan Hedberg made 20 saves for the Devils. The Flyers skated to a 3-0 win in the series opener in New Jersey.

                          TV: 1 p.m. ET. CSN-Philadelphia, MSG Plus

ABOUT THE FLYERS (27-14-4): Philadelphia, which is 6-4-0 in its last 10 games, is coming off a 4-1 home loss to the New York Islanders. Matt Read netted his 14th goal of the season, which leads all rookies. Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves to fall to 10-4-1 on the season. Sean Couturier, another Flyers rookie, assisted on Read's goal extending his point streak to six games. He has five goals and two assists over that span. Couturier had scored in five straight games prior to the Islander game. Philadelphia is 16-7-2 on the road this season.

ABOUT THE DEVILS (26-18-2): New Jersey, which is 6-3-1 in its last 10 games, is coming off a 4-1 home loss to the Boston Bruins. Petr Sykora scored his 12th goal of the season for the Devils, who held a 1-0 edge until the Bruins erupted for four third-period goals - including two in 35 seconds. The loss to Boston was the first in five games for New Jersey. Sykora has scored in consecutive games after going eight contests without tallying. Elias, who assisted on the goal, has four goals and 11 points during his current seven-game point streak. He also has 25 points in his last 21 contests. The Devils are 12-8-1 at home this season.

                          TRENDS:
                          * Flyers are 4-0 in their last 4 after scoring 2 goals or less in their previous game.
                          * Devils are 5-0 in their last 5 when their opponent scores 2 goals or less in their previous game.
                          * Over is 4-0 in Flyers last 4 games as a road underdog.
                          * Over is 3-0-1 in Devils last 4 home games.
                          * Favorite is 30-12 in the last 42 meetings.

                          OVERTIME:

                          1. All-Star Claude Giroux has not scored a goal since the Winter Classic on Jan. 2. That is a span of eight games.

                          2. Scott Hartnell has 20 goals through 45 games this season. Last year, he had 24 goals in 82 games.

                          PREDICTION: Flyers 4, Devils 2.

The Flyers, also coming off a 4-1 home loss, have been incredible on the road at 16-7-2.
