Pick 'n' roll: Sunday's best NBA bets

Washington Wizards at Detroit Pistons (-7, 191)

Detroit enters on a four-game win streak, its longest since a five-game run in December 2009. The Pistons have covered all four, including three by double digits.

"Our guys have a good rhythm," underrated Detroit coach Lawrence Frank said. "We have to continue to raise the bar, continue to do better, but we're playing with a good rhythm and a good spirit."

Second-year big man Greg Monroe, who had 18 points and 11 rebounds in Thursday’s blowout of New Jersey, is developing. And the Pistons are improving defensively. In their hot streak, they’ve held all four opponents to 92 or fewer points.

Washington comes in on a 1-6 SU and ATS skid. The Wizards are 3-7 SU and ATS since Randy Wittman replaced fired coach Flip Saunders.

Detroit is 5-0-1 ATS in its last six home games.

    Pick: Pistons

Houston Rockets at Golden State Warriors (-2.5, 205)

Houston’s bench has been dominant the past two games, scoring 66 points in a win over Portland and 57 in the victory over Phoenix. Reserves combined to shoot 57 percent from beyond the arc.

The Rockets are on a 4-1 SU and ATS run.

Golden State took care of shorthanded Denver on Thursday, but have been horrible defensively as of late. The Warriors rank 30th in points allowed (100.9).

Houston is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings. Golden State is 2-6 ATS in its last eight home games.

    Pick: Rockets

Sunday's betting tips: Hokies bad home bet lately

      Who’s hot

NBA: The favorite is 11-4 ATS in the last 15 Jazz-Grizzlies games.

NBA: The over is 7-1 ATS in the last eight Lakers-Raptors games.

NHL: The Panthers are 14-5 in their last 19 games vs. the Islanders.

NHL: The Sharks are 10-4 in their last 14 visits to St. Louis.

NCAAB: The home team is 18-4 ATS in the last 22 Illinois-Michigan games.

      Who’s not

NBA: The Wizards are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games vs. Detroit.

NBA: The Heat is 2-6 ATS in its last eight road games.

NHL: The Capitals are 2-9 in their last 11 games as a road underdog.

NHL: The over is 0-7 in the Stars’ last seven home games.

NCAAB: Virginia Tech is 0-5 ATS in its last five home games, and 0-5 ATS in its last five meetings with Boston College.

      Key stat

18 – That’s how many offensive rebounds Georgetown grabbed in the first matchup against St. John’s, a 69-49 road win. The Hoyas, who host the Red Storm on Sunday, own a plus-5.4 rebounding margin. St. John’s has a minus-3.5 margin, second worst in the 16-team Big East.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Raptors guard Jerryd Bayless (11.3 ppg, 3.0 apg) is doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Lakers with an ankle injury. It would be his second straight absence after Bayless scored 84 points in the previous six games (14.0 ppg). Jose Calderon and Leandro Barbosa will get more minutes until Bayless returns.

      Games of the day

Chicago Bulls at Boston Celtics (3.5, 176)

Miami Heat at Atlanta Hawks (4.5, 190)

      Notable quotable

“I will assess the situation at the end of the season no different than I do with the other 18 sports, no different than I did for the football program. I need to look at the total body of work and all of the things that come into play as far as making those decisions. Because those are important decisions and they affect a lot of people. I'll tell you this: No one wants to win more than I do. I'm here to win championships." – Illinois AD Mike Thomas, when asked about the job status of basketball coach Bruce Weber. Illinois (16-8, 5-6 Big Ten) visits Michigan (18-7, 8-4) on Sunday.

      Notes and tips

Penguins center Jordan Staal returned from his left knee injury Saturday against Winnipeg and looked sharp in the 8-5 win, getting a goal and an assist. He had not played since suffering the injury Jan. 6 against the Rangers. Staal’s return should ease the scoring load on Evgeni Malkin and James Neal.

The St. Louis Rams have hired Les Snead, the Falcons’ director of player personnel, to be their general manager. Snead has spent most of his career in Atlanta but also has worked in Jacksonville. New coach Jeff Fisher will retain final authority over personnel matters for the Rams, who own the No. 2 pick in the April draft.

The Hornets won’t have starting point guard Jarrett Jack (knee) for Monday’s game against Utah. Jack missed Friday’s loss to Portland and isn’t expected back for a week. Starting in his place, Greivis Vasquez shot 2 of 10 from the field, missing all five of his 3-point tries. Vasquez did contribute six points, seven assists and five steals while committing two turnovers in nearly 37 minutes.

College funds: Sunday's best NCAAB bets

Washington Huskies at Oregon State Beavers (-3.5, 157)

The Huskies haven’t been swept in their Oregon swing in consecutive seasons since 1990 and 1991. But they’re in danger of doing so following Thursday’s 25-point loss at Oregon.

Fortunately, they match up extremely well with Oregon State, as evidenced by their 95-80 home win in the Pac-12 opener for both schools.

In that game, the Beavers had no answer for Washington freshman Tony Wroten, who had 26 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Oregon State has a high-octane attack (80.8 points per game) led by Jared Cunningham (18.6), but the team has difficulties with big men such as Washington 7-footer Aziz N’Diaye.

The Beavers rank near the bottom of the Pac-12 in rebounding margin at plus-0.3. Washington leads the conference at plus-5.5.

        Pick: Huskies

Stanford Cardinal at Southern Cal Trojans (4.5, 112)

This isn’t exactly a titanic matchup.

The slumping Cardinal has dropped five of its last six games, all the losses coming by double digits. The Trojans, down to six scholarship players, have lost 12 of their last 13.

Both teams are struggling to score. When they met on New Year’s Eve, host Stanford won 51-43.

In its last six games, the Cardinal has shot 37.3 percent from the field and an atrocious 25.4 percent from beyond the arc.

The under is 5-0 in the last five meetings.

        Pick: Under

Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets

Florida Panthers at New York Islanders (-115, 5)

The Islanders are 7-2-2 in their last 11 games. Mark Streit has scored in back-to-back games, including the gamewinner in Saturday’s 2-1 overtime win over L.A.

All-Star John Tavares enjoys facing the Panthers. He has five goals in 10 career games against Florida.

Florida has struggled in the latter of back-to-back contests this season. The Panthers are just 2-5-1 in such games, getting outscored by a 34-14 margin in the process.

Panthers defenseman Jason Garrison suffered an undisclosed lower body injury in Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Devils. He is unlikely to play Sunday.

          Pick: Islanders

Los Angeles Kings at Dallas Stars (-115, 5)

This is the sixth and final meeting between the Kings and Stars. Dallas lost the first two, but has won three straight, most recently a 5-4 shootout victory in Los Angeles.

The Kings continue to flounder offensively. They’re dead last in the NHL with 2.07 goals per game after Saturday’s 2-1 overtime loss at the Islanders. L.A. is 1-3-1 on a season-long six-game road trip that ends Sunday.

The Stars are coming off a 3-2 shootout loss at Buffalo in which they blew a 2-0 third-period lead. Michael Ryder scored his 20th goal in the defeat, the fifth time he has reached that plateau in eight NHL seasons.

Alex Goligoski has eight points in his last eight games for the Stars, who sit four points behind L.A. in the Pacific Division.

The Kings have mustered six goals in their last five road games and are 0-5 in their last five games playing on zero days’ rest.

          Pick: Stars
