ASA's 10* NIT TOTAL OF YEAR (Thurs) - 50-22 in games involving the Big Ten!
PLAY ON 10* OVER the Total, Minnesota vs Stanford, Thursday at 7:00 PM EST
These two teams are both coming off “under” games in their NIT semi-final matchups. However, simply looking a discovering they finished under the total, is fairly deceiving. Each played in a VERY high possession game, yet the offense in each from all teams was dreadful. Now that they have a game at MSG under their belts, expect the offense to fair much better in Thursday’s NIT Final. This total is set considerably lower than each of the semi-final games these two played in. Stanford beat UMass 74-64 in a game where the total was set at 149. Minnesota beat Washington 68-67 (in OT) in a game in which the total was set at 144.5. This total currently sits at 131.5. In Minnesota’s win over Washington, the two teams combined for 157 offensive possessions which is really high. This includes overtime which obviously ups the number, however at the end for regulation they had 139 possession which is still high. The game with Stanford and UMass had a whopping 162 offensive possessions in 40 minutes. The problem in either game was not the number of attempts, it was the number of shots that actually hit the bottom of the net. Only ONE of the four teams involved actually topped 37% from the field (Minny hit 44%). Not one of the four got even close to averaging 1.00 point per possession. The four PPP numbers were 0.79, 0.84, 0.86, & 0.91, just terrible numbers. Thus in review, the chances were there, they just all were very poor offensively. Even with that, Stanford and UMass tallied 138 points and Minnesota and Washington put up 133 points (in OT). We look for a much more effective offensive performance from both of these teams on Thursday. We should also have plenty of opportunities again as Stanford loves to get up and down the floor and while Minnesota’s tempo stats are lower due to their Big Ten play, they don’t mind playing at a faster pace. The Gophs have gone OVER the number in 6 of their last 8 games and Stanford has done the same in 6 of their last 7. This number is set too low and we take the OVER.
