Wednesday's betting tips: Caps excel in underdog role

      Weather to watch

An 18-mph wind will be blowing in from right when the Rangers host the Yankees on Wednesday night. Skies will be clear, with temperatures in the mid-80s.

      Who’s hot

NBA: The Spurs are 13-3-1 ATS in their last 17 road games vs. teams with winning home records.

NBA: The under is 5-1 in the last six Bulls-Pacers games.

NHL: Washington is 7-2 in its last nine games as an underdog of +151 to +200.

MLB: The under is 6-0 in Washington pitcher Jordan Zimmermann’s last six starts vs. losing teams.

MLB: Tampa Bay is 8-2 in Jeremy Hellickson’s last 10 home starts.

      Who’s not

NBA: Cleveland is 5-14 ATS in its last 19 home games.

NBA: Charlotte is 1-10 ATS in its last 11 games following an ATS loss.

NHL: The over is 2-7 in the last nine Caps-Bruins games in Boston.

MLB: Toronto is 2-6 in its last eight games vs. pitchers with a WHIP under 1.15.

MLB: The A’s are 1-10 in their last 11 games with umpire Jerry Layne behind the plate.

      Key stat

5 – Wednesday brings the Bruins’ fifth Game 7 in their last seven playoff series. Boston is 12-10 all-time when a series goes the distance, while the Capitals are 2-7. Boston became the first team in NHL history to win three Game 7s in last year’s run to the Stanley Cup championship.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Magic point guard Jameer Nelson (calf) is expected to play Wednesday against the Bobcats despite not practicing Tuesday. Before leaving Sunday’s game against Denver after less than two minutes on the court, Nelson was on a roll. He had four straight games with at least 16 points and nine assists.

      Games of the day

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins (-200, 5)

New York Yankees at Texas Rangers (-125, 10.5)

      Notable quotable

"It's absolutely ludicrous. It's impossible. I've never heard of it before. That's something from 'Star Wars.' When I first heard something about it being a wiretap, I thought they were talking about Sammy 'The Bull' Gravano or something. I didn't even know what they were talking about." -- interim Saints coach Joe Vitt, talking about allegations that GM Mickey Loomis eavesdropped on opposing coaches' conversations from 2002-04, a violation of wiretapping laws.

      Tips and notes

The NBA’s top sixth man, Thunder swingman James Harden, has not been cleared to play yet after taking an elbow to the head Sunday from the Lakers’ Metta World Peace and suffering a concussion. Harden went through portions of Tuesday’s shootaround but did not play against the Kings. OKC is locked in as the West’s No. 2 seed.

Meanwhile, the league suspended the former Ron Artest for seven games -- the Lakers' final regular-season game and six playoff games. "The concussion suffered by James Harden demonstrates the danger posed by violent acts of this kind, particularly when they are directed at the head area," NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement. "We remain committed to taking necessary measures to protect the safety of NBA players, including the imposition of appropriate penalties for players with a history of on-court altercations."

The Mets placed outfielder Jason Bay (fractured rib) on the 15-day DL and recalled infielder Zach Lutz from Triple-A Buffalo. Bay got hurt trying to make a diving catch Monday against the Giants. Bay was hitting a disappointing .240, with three homers and five RBIs.

Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

        STREAKING

        Lance Lynn, St. Louis Cardinals
        3-0, 1.42 ERA

The converted reliever has allowed one run in each of his three starts, piling up 17 strikeouts against four walks. He ranks fifth in the NL with a 0.74 WHIP. Even when Chris Carpenter returns, Lynn's spot in the rotation is secure. He tries to beat the Cubs for a second time Wednesday.

        Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners
        1-1, 2.76 ERA

The 26-year-old right-hander is showing his Cy Young form, ranking among MLB’s leaders with 31 strikeouts. He dominated the Indians last time out, tossing eight shutout innings and fanning 12. Hernandez, who was still throwing 93 mph in his last inning, deserved a win but the bullpen blew it in the ninth.

        SLUMPING

        Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox
        1-1, 9.00 ERA

The Yanks lit up the 27-year-old right-hander for five homers in his last outing, and Buchholz has given up at least five earned runs in each of his three starts. The league is hitting .324 against him. In his only previous start against Minnesota, the Twins pounded him for seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.

        R.A. Dickey, New York Mets
        2-1, 5.71 ERA

The wheels fell off for the 37-year-old knuckleballer last time out, as the Braves pounded him for eight hits and eight earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Dickey has yielded five homers in three starts, and opponents are batting .324 against him. Miami 2B Omar Infante is 11 for 22 (.500) against Dickey in his career.

Capitals at Bruins: What Bettors Need to Know

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins (-200, 5)

THE STORY: The Washington Capitals failed to finish off the Boston Bruins in Game 6 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal, resulting in a seventh and deciding game on Wednesday. Tyler Seguin scored his first goal of the series in overtime to lift the Bruins to a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon. Both clubs will be more rested heading into the final contest. After playing Games 4, 5, and 6 within a four-day span, players have two days off before the final battle in Boston.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, CBC, NBCSN, NESN, COMCAST

ABOUT THE CAPITALS: Goaltender Braden Holtby has posted an impressive .935 save percentage while playing two-time Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas to a standstill in his first NHL playoff series. "Seeing him just continue to excel under the pressure is something I didn't really expect. He's really just a lot mentally stronger than I thought," Capitals forward Jay Beagle said. “The pressure does not seem to affect him at all.” Surprisingly, the offensive pressure hasn’t been on All-Star Alex Ovechkin this series. Ten different players have accounted for the Capitals’ 14 goals.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: The Bruins are facing their fifth Game 7 in their last six playoff series. Boston became the first team in NHL history to win three Game 7s in one playoff year during their Stanley Cup run last season. The Bruins prevailed in seven games over Montreal, Tampa Bay and Vancouver. Center Patrice Bergeron didn’t practice Tuesday. The forward was banged up in Game 5 last Saturday and saw limited minutes in Game 6. The faceoff specialist was the only Bruin missing from practice, but he will not miss this game.

          TRENDS:

*Road team is 4-1 in the last five games.
*Under is 4-1 in Bruins' last five games playing on two days' rest.
*Under is 7-2 in the last nine meetings in Boston.
*Capitals are 4-1 in their last five games as road underdogs.

          OVERTIME:

          1. The Bruins are 12-10 in Game 7s, while the Capitals own a 2-7 record in seventh games.

          2. Washington has allowed just two Boston goals on 20 man-advantage opportunities.

          3. Each contest has been decided by one goal. It's the first time in league history the first six games of a series have been decided by a single marker.

Hondo (the way it should be posted and with units!)

Hondo, who took three beatings Monday night, absorbed a mere double-bludgeoning last night as the all-around ineptitude of the Twins and Giants caused his debt to jump to 485 motas.

Today, Mr. Aitch will look to turn two with the Pirates – 10 units apiece on McDonald to make fast work of the Rockies in the opener and 10 on Morton to salt away a victory in the second game. Also, he will toss 10 at the D’backs with Cahill on the mound.
