What bettors need to know: Monday's NBA playoff action

New York Knicks at Miami Heat (-9.5, 184)

THE STORY: One game in, and it looks like any optimism the New York Knicks had about stealing a first-round series from the Miami Heat has been wiped away. Not only were the seventh-seeded Knicks thoroughly dismantled in a 100-67 Game 1 loss, they also lost their perimeter defensive stopper when Iman Shumpert went down with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The second-seeded Heat showed off their defensive prowess in Game 1, forcing 27 turnovers.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT, SUN (Miami), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE KNICKS: New York came into the series with some confidence due to the way it finished the regular season. Carmelo Anthony was especially strong in April, averaging just under 30 points. With Anthony at a superstar level, Amar'e Stoudemire rounding back into shape and Shumpert and Tyson Chandler anchoring the defense, the Knicks at least expected to be competitive. But Anthony shot 3 for 15 and Chandler and Shumpert were each held scoreless in the opener. Baron Davis, who missed the first half of the regular season after back surgery, was limited to 17 minutes after experiencing stiffness in his back. New York ended up shooting 35.7 percent from the floor, with J.R. Smith the only player managing more than 11 points.

ABOUT THE HEAT: Miami put it away early on Saturday, outscoring the Knicks 57-29 in the second and third quarters to coast to the finish. LeBron James handled the bulk of the scoring in the first half and finished with 32 points on 10-of-14 shooting. But his most significant contribution may have come as one of the several players swarming Anthony and forcing him to catch the ball further away from the basket. The Heat scored 24 of the final 26 points in the second quarter and scored a franchise record 38 points off turnovers en route to the punishing win.

    TRENDS:
    - Miami is 5-1 against the spread in its last six home games.
    - The under is 7-0-1 in the last eight meetings between the two teams.
    - New York is 19-7 against the spread in its last 26.

    BUZZER BEATERS:

    1. The Knicks have lost 11 straight playoff games dating back to 2001. It matches the second-longest streak in NBA history behind Memphis’ 12-game skid from 2004-06.

    2. James has scored 30 or more points in 41 of his 93 career playoff games.

    3. New York’s 67 points Saturday matched a franchise playoff low.

Orlando Magic at Indiana Pacers (-9, 187.5)

THE STORY: The Orlando Magic pulled off a stunning victory in the series opener and look for a second consecutive road win when they play the Indiana Pacers on Monday. Sixth-seeded Orlando scored the game’s final 11 points while rallying for an 81-77 victory. Jason Richardson’s fifth 3-pointer of the contest represented the go-ahead shot. Third-seeded Indiana now faces the possibility of going down 2-0 despite Orlando being without Dwight Howard for the playoffs.

    TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBATV

ABOUT THE MAGIC: There were a lot of naysayers about Orlando’s chances of winning this series and it didn’t take long for the Magic to point that out after winning the opener. Glen Davis, who had 16 points and 13 rebounds, was particularly vocal. “It is huge to go out there and get Game 1 in their place,” Davis said. “How their back’s against the wall and they’ve got to win Game 2. We’re trying to get every game we can. We’re not trying to slow down. We’re not trying to be complacent.” Richardson made five of Orlando’s nine 3-pointers and had 17 points along with Jameer Nelson.

ABOUT THE PACERS: Indiana shot just 34.5 percent in Game 1. The Pacers missed their final nine shots and went scoreless over the final 4:05. Forward David West scored a game-high 19 points and center Roy Hibbert blocked a career-high nine shots, one off the playoff record shared by Utah’s Mark Eaton (1985) and Houston’s Hakeem Olajuwon (1990). Giving up home-court advantage was a disheartening development for the Pacers, who had played very well down the stretch. “In one game, you give up what you played all season for,” West said. “We talked about how good this team was, how dangerous they were in shooting the ball. They got us.”

    TRENDS:
    - The under is 6-2 in Orlando's last eight road games.
    - Orlando has covered in six of the last seven meetings between the two teams.
    - Indiana is 1-10-1 against the number in its last 11 playoff games as a favorite.

    BUZZER BEATERS:

    1. The teams combined for only 63 second-half points in Game 1.

    2. Pacers leading scorer Danny Granger scored 17 points in the opener, but was just 7-of-20 shooting and committed five turnovers.

    3. Richardson connected on five or more 3-pointers three times in the regular season.

Dallas Mavericks at Oklahoma City Thunder (-6.5, 194.5)

THE STORY: It has taken just 47 minutes, 58 1/2 seconds for the Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder to recreate the drama of last season's Western Conference finals. Kevin Durant's miracle shot with 1.5 seconds left in the fourth quarter gave the Thunder the win in Game 1, and they'll look to head to Dallas with a 2-0 lead when the teams renew acquaintances Monday night. The Thunder won just once in last year's conference finals.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT, Fox Sports Oklahoma

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS: Dallas reached last year's finals by orchestrating a pair of fourth-quarter comebacks to upend the Thunder. Saturday night, it was the Mavericks on the receiving end of a stunning comeback as they failed to hold on to a late seven-point advantage. Dallas superstar Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 11 points in the final five minutes to keep the Mavericks ahead, was gutted. "It's tough. This is definitely as tough of a loss as you can get," he said. "But if a team can recover it, it's an experienced one and we definitely have a lot of older guys who have been through a lot."

ABOUT THE THUNDER: It wasn't the prettiest winning shot ever hit, but Durant and the Thunder will gladly take it. With the clock winding down and Oklahoma City down one, Durant took the ball to the free-throw line before uncoiling an awkward jumper that bounced high off the front of the rim before deflecting off the backboard and falling straight into the hoop. The shot left teammate James Harden impressed. "It was a great shot," Harden said. "It saved the game for us. I don't think we played well … but he saved us at the end." Durant, the three-time defending NBA scoring champion, finished with 25 points.

    TRENDS:
    - The road time is 19-6-1 against the number in this matchup.
    - Oklahoma City has dropped four straight against the spread
    - The over is 4-1 in Dallas' last five road games.

    BUZZER BEATERS:

    1. Durant, Harden, Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka combined to score 94 of the Thunder's 99 points in Game 1. Thabo Sefolosha had the other five.

    2. The Mavericks had a final chance to win Game 1 but had no timeouts - forcing them to inbound from their own baseline - and couldn't get a shot off.

    3. Jason Terry scored 20 points for Dallas but had zero in the second half.

What bettors need to know: Monday's NHL playoff action

Washington Capitals at New York Rangers (-150, 5)

THE STORY: Chris Kreider has quickly become a big hit on Broadway. The New York Rangers rookie had the game winner in the opener of their Eastern Conference semifinal series with Washington on Saturday, and will look to continue his impressive stretch as the teams renew acquaintances for Game 2 on Monday. New York used its trademark shot blocking and solid goaltending from Hart Trophy candidate Henrik Lundqvist to strike first in the best-of-seven.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCS, CBC

ABOUT THE CAPITALS: Rookie netminder Braden Holtby was the toast of DC after leading Washington to an upset of the defending-champion Boston Bruins in the first round, but he looked ordinary in Saturday's series opener against the Rangers. New York's two third-period goals were on shots Holtby felt he should have stopped. “Obviously I wasn’t real happy with it. It was a tough game, mentally wise, and I didn’t do a good enough job," he said. "Just crucial parts of the game. Those goals in the third, those are goals that I’d like to have back." Holtby is expected to get the Game 2 start.

ABOUT THE RANGERS: It hasn't taken New York fans long to jump on the Kreider bandwagon. Throngs of fans chanted his name after his third-period goal sent New York to the victory. "It was a surreal experience. I got goose bumps obviously," said Kreider, playing in just his sixth career NHL game. "I was really tired after the goal but didn’t feel so tired when they started chanting." It wasn't all good news for the Rangers, who won despite doing little at the offensive end. New York had just eight shots through the first two periods - and only three of those came from forwards.

      TRENDS:
      - The home team is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings between the two teams.
      - The under is 2-0-2 in the last four meetings between the two teams.
      - New York is 16-5 in its last 21 vs. Southeast division opponents.

      OVERTIME:

      1. Capitals RW Alex Ovechkin, who led Washington with 38 goals, had just one shot in more than 21 minutes of ice time in Game 1.

      2. Rangers D Steve Eminger, a former Capital, returned to the lineup for the first time since spraining his ankle March 15. He finished with 4:25 of ice time.

      3. Lundqvist became just the third Rangers goalie to win 20 playoff games, joining Mike Richter (41) and Ed Giacomin (29).

Los Angeles Kings at St. Louis Blues (-160, 4.5)

THE STORY: The Los Angeles Kings upended the St. Louis Blues in the opener of their Western Conference semifinal series by beating their opponents at their own game. The Kings will look to repeat the feat Monday night as they visit St. Louis for Game 2 of the best-of-seven set. The Blues surged into the conference elite on the strength of solid defense and sensational goaltending - qualities Los Angeles exhibited in a 3-1 win in the series opener.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, CNBC, TSN

ABOUT THE KINGS: Los Angeles is no defensive slouch itself, finishing second to the Blues in goals against in the entire conference. But while many expected the Kings' offense to struggle against St. Louis, it found just enough punch - paced by a shorthanded goal from defenseman Matt Greene - to draw first blood. Kings captain Dustin Brown credited his club with limiting St. Louis' offensive opportunities and atoning for early defensive miscues. "For whatever reason, we gave those chances up," he said. "But I think we did a pretty good job of correcting those mistakes and limiting their grade-A scoring chances the rest of the game.''

ABOUT THE BLUES: St. Louis may be without one of its key defensemen for Game 2. Alex Pietrangelo left Saturday's game with a possible concussion after he was rammed into the boards by Kings rookie Dwight King. He returned briefly before departing again, and is considered questionable for Monday. Blues forward Andy McDonald, who has missed significant time with a concussion himself, wasn't a fan of the hit. "He was in a dangerous area there, obviously," McDonald said. "You're four feet from the boards and you get pushed from behind, that's a scary hit. Hopefully he's OK. We'll have to wait and see."

      TRENDS:
      - The Kings have won four straight as road underdogs.
      - The under is 7-0-1 in the last eight meetings between the two teams.
      - St. Louis is 1-4 in the last four meetings between the two teams.

      OVERTIME:

      1. St. Louis went 0 for 3 on the power play in Game 1 and is now scoreless in 17 man-advantage opportunities against the Kings so far this season.

      2. Pietrangelo finished third on the Blues in scoring during the regular season with 12 goals and 39 assists.

      3. Greene's goal was the first shorthanded playoff tally by a Kings defenseman since Rob Blake scored one against Calgary in 1993, the year the Kings reached the finals.

Hondo collected with the Diamondbacks and White Sox yesterday but was betrayed by the Nationals, so the debt dropped only to 530 powells.

Tonight, Mr. Aitch hopes that Bird is the word – 10 units on the Orioles to do the Hiroki pokey in El Bronx. Also, he’ll give the nod to the other king who’s working tonight in Florida – 10 units on King Felix and the Mariners.

                      Arizona +150 over MIAMI Pinnacle
The Marlins are a mess right now. They’re batting a combined .226 and just .186 over their past five. They’ve lost two of three to the Diamondbacks and overall have lost eight of past nine. Arizona has scored 15 times in the three games here so far and there is little reason not to expect that many or more against Mark Buehrle. Buehrle has pitched more innings than any other pitcher in the majors over the past 10 years. He has some value but he’s also outpitched his skills for years and this season is no different with an xERA that is almost 1½ runs higher than his actual ERA. He has an unsustainable 81% strand rate. Buehrle has shown an uncanny ability to avoid disaster starts or innings and certainly deserves credit for what he’s done. However, as a big favorite, pitching for a reeling Marlins team that is seeing BB’s, he’s far too big a risk. Miami doesn’t get a break here either when facing one of Arizona’s hottest prospects in lefthander, Patrick Corbin. Corbin was very impressive in the spring with a 0.57 ERA over his first five appearances. He’s made four starts with Double-A Mobile this year and is 2-0 with a nifty 1.67 ERA. He has also fanned 25 batters in 27 innings. Corbin has some risk too because he’s never pitched above Double-A but at age 22 and with a taste of facing major-league hitters in the spring, he could certainly be ready to take the next step and at this price the risk is worth the reward. Play: Arizona +150 (Risking 2 units).

Baltimore +155 over N.Y. YANKEES Pinnacle
Jason Hammel has resurrected his career this season with a 1.73 ERA and 1.00 WHIP after four starts. While his ERA is sure to rise, he is no fluke. His skills are elite with a 62% groundball rate, 26 K’s in 25 IP and a BAA of .194. His rise started in spring training when he came to camp with more velocity and a sinking fastball, which caused Chipper Jones to say he was the most impressive pitcher he faced all spring. He’s already throwing harder (93.5 mph average fastball velocity) than he has at any time during his career. Leaving Colorado has worked out well and with improved raw stuff and an elite groundball tilt, there is plenty to like here. The Yankees have lost three of Hiroki Kuroda’s four starts. His only win this season came against an Angels’ team that is batting .166 this past week. Kuroda is 37-years-old and had the luxury of pitching at Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles for four years. Kuroda’s 4.38 ERA this season is right in line with his average skill set and once again we get some excellent value betting against the overpriced Yankees. Play: Baltimore +155 (Risking 2 units).

Seattle +117 over TAMPA BAY Pinnacle
All Felix Hernandez has been doing for years is taking the ball every fifth day and dominating the game. His chances of improving are nil because you can’t improve perfection. Hernandez' remarkable consistency and elite skills make him one of the most appealing investments in the business and any time we can take back a tag on him you can pencil us in. In this spot, against Jeremy Hellickson, we can’t click our wager fast enough. Hellickson is 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA and that is this year’s most misleading W/L record and ERA. In spite of skills last year indicating his results were outpacing his ability, Hellickson continued to escape disaster. Four starts into 2012, Hellickson is at it again. In 25 innings, he’s walked 12 and struck out 14. His xERA is 4.75 and that’s due to too many walks and an 86% strand rate. Hellickson continues to put up goose eggs while pitching on the edge of disaster every start. He simply cannot continue to win games and post ERA’s that are more than two runs lower than his xERA. Hellickson favored over Felix Hernandez is a bet that should never be made. Get on this one early. Play: Seattle +117 (Risking 2 units).
