      SPORTS WAGERS

      St. Louis +122 over MIAMI

The Marlins are reeling. Not only have they lost eight of nine but they’ve had the most anemic offense in the majors this entire month. The Marlins have batted just .208 over their last 20 games while scoring just 60 times, both being major league lows. At the same time, the pitching staff has allowed 60 runs in its past eight games. Anibal Sanchez is 1-5 at home with a 5.40 ERA. Current Cardinals have 82 career AB’s against Sanchez and have compiled a .317 BA, a .512 SLG % and a .906 OPS against him. Over his last three games, Sanchez has walked 10 batters, which has led to a 7.47 ERA and a 0-2 record over that span. Joe Kelley is getting his feet wet at this level with the Cardinals winning two of his three starts. He’s only walked two batters over 15 innings, he induces plenty of groundballs and he’s gaining confidence. The kid has a great sinker and he’s very aggressive out there. The Cards have won five in a row and have scored 43 runs over that span. Everything points to the major’s best road offense completing the sweep here. Play: St. Louis +122 (Risking 2 units).

      HOUSTON -117 over San Diego

The Astros have won eight of 11 games at home against southpaw starters and will face one here in Clayton Richard. Richard has had the luxury of pitching half his games at Petco, where he’s been effective but on the road the story is different. In eight road starts he has two wins and a 4.88 ERA. He doesn’t strike out many and every time he’s pitched in a hitter’s park, he’s been torched. Games in Colorado and Philadelphia have resulted in Richard allowing 18 hits and 13 earned runs in 10.2 frames. All of his other starts this season have been in pitcher friendly parks and this isn’t one of those. Houston has scored five times or more in four straight. Over that span they’ve scored 27 times. Lucas Harrell is coming on strong with a bunch of quality starts in June and they haven’t been against easy competition. Harrell has faced the Rangers in Texas, the White Sox in Chicago, the red-hot Cardinals and the Rockies in Colorado in four of his last five starts. When he took a step down against the Indians in his last start, he allowed one run in seven innings while striking out nine. Harrell has an outstanding 56% groundball profile, his strikeout rate continues to climb and at home, he’s 4-1 with a 2.48 ERA. This just might be his easiest assignment to date. Play: Houston -117 (Risking 2 units to win 1.7 units).

Game: New York Mets at Chicago Cubs (2:20 PM Eastern)
              Pick: Chicago Cubs +100 (moneyline)

The Cubs have been a thorn in the Mets' side winning the first two in this series, and have now evened off their home mark vs. the Mets' road ledger, with both squads at 16-19 for the season. So all things being equal this should be a toss-up game with the Cubs at -110, but the Cubs wear the dog role, and have momentum here at plus odds at home. Samardzija has given the Cubs nine good starts in his last 11 allowing 3 runs or less, while the Mets' offense is starving their pitching, producing just 37 runs in their last 11 games, and just four through two games in this series. The Mets are imploding vs. the NL Central, losers of six straight games, while Samardzija is shining vs. winning teams, leading the Cubs to the win column in four of his last five. The Mets are facing a chamber of horrors in the Windy City where they have won just eight times in their last 28 here. Play on the Cubs.

Chicago White Sox @ Minnesota Twins - WHITE SOX -1.5 (+100) *1:10 PM EST START*
                  Listed Pitchers: Sale vs Blackburn
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 2.00 units)

The White Sox and Twins will play a rubber match game this afternoon as both teams have each won a game. The Twins won 4-1 on Monday, and the White Sox won last night's meeting 3-2. Chicago sits a top the AL Central with a 39-35 record and the Twins are at the bottom of the division with a 30-43 record. The White Sox are a stellar 20-14 away from home this season, while the Twins are just 14-23 at home. Chris Sale will be on the mound for Chicago and he is 8-2 with a 2.24 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and .194 opponents batting average - simply one of the American League's best starting pitchers to date. He is coming off of 8 innings of shutout ball against Milwaukee in his last start. Nick Blackburn is going for Minnesota and he is 4-4 on the season with a 7.45 ERA, 1.73 WHIP, and .323 opponents batting average. In his 11 starts this season only one has been a quality start, although the team is 6-5 in games he starts. The White Sox are 8-5 in games that Sale has started, and he has already pitched 8 innings of shutout ball against the Twins earlier this year in a 6-0 win. Chicago is 8-3 in their last 11 as a road favorite, and 8-3 in their last 12 during Game 3 of a series. The Twins are 3-8 in their last 11 home games vs a team with a winning record, and just 5-12 in their last 17 during Game 3 of a series. Take Chicago by 2 this afternoon.

New York Mets @ Chicago Cubs - METS TO WIN (-106) *2:20 PM EST START*
                  Listed Pitchers: Niese vs Samardzija
(Note: I'm risking 2.12 units to win 2.00 units)

The Cubs have taken the first two games of this series by winning 6-1 and 5-3, but I don't think they get a sweep this afternoon. The Mets are 39-36 on the year and 16-19 away from home, while the Cubbies are just 26-48 on the season and 16-19 at home. New York has lost a string of 4 straight games (with their last win being when Niese pitched against the Yankees), while the Cubs had lost 4 straight before taking the first two against New York in this series. Mets lefty starter Jon Niese is 5-3 on the year with a 3.75 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and .241 opponents batting average. Jeff Samardzija will go for the Cubs and he is 5-6 on the season with a 4.34 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and .264 opponents batting average. In his last three starts he is 0-3 with a 10.29 ERA, as he has allowed 20 hits and 16 earned runs against in just 14 innings of work. The Mets are hitting .254 against righties, while the Cubs are hitting just .216 as a team against lefties. They are also just 16-35 in their last 51 games vs a left handed starter. Tonight we have one team with a starting pitcher who is pitching excellent right now versus a team with a starting pitcher who has pretty much fallen apart over his last handful of starts. We also have a team who struggles against lefty starters and is facing a tough lefty tonight. Take the Mets to avoid the sweep with Niese on the mound.

                      Wunderdog (2-2 +0* Tues.)

Game: Cleveland at New York Yankees (1:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Cleveland +185 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 3.7)

Yankees have used the long ball to score over half their runs on the season - a dangerous weapon for sure, but they struggle to score otherwise. The Tribe goes to battle behind Ubaldo Jimenez who has electric stuff, but suffers from wildness at times which is often his undoing, but when he is on, he dominates. The Yankees often struggle vs. pitchers they have seen little of, and Jimenez has faced the Bombers just once, allowing 2 runs over seven innings. Look for Jimenez in his Yankee Stadium debut to be charged up and on, as Joe Girardi often sits starters in a day game following a night game. The Indians are faring well against top pitching at 13-6 in their last 19 vs. a pitcher with a WHIP of less than 1.15. Play on Cleveland.
Game: Chicago White Sox at Minnesota (1:10 PM Eastern)

Pick: 2 units on Minnesota +160 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 3.2)

The Minnesota Twins lost a tough one 3-2 yesterday, but this team has been playing great baseball and possess a 15-11 mark over their last 26 games. The White Sox are a bit misleading at four games over the coveted .500 mark, as most of their damage was done in a hot streak that saw them go 13-1 in a 14-game stretch. That leaves this team at eight games under .500 the rest of the season, and just 9-13 since the hot streak. The Twins a remarkable 21-8 in Blackburn's last 29 starts at home vs. a winning team, and they are also 8-1 in their last nine when facing a team that allowed 2 runs or less in their last contest. The Twins have cashed five straight behind Blackburn as a dog, and the White Sox come into today's action just 1-8 in their last nine off a win. Play on Minnesota.

Game: New York Mets at Chicago Cubs (2:20 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Chicago Cubs +100 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 2)

The Cubs have been a thorn in the Mets’ side winning the first two in this series, and have now evened off their home mark vs. the Mets’ road ledger, with both squads at 16-19 for the season. So all things being equal this should be a toss-up game with the Cubs at -110, but the Cubs wear the dog role, and have momentum here at plus odds at home. Samardzija has given the Cubs nine good starts in his last 11 allowing 3 runs or less, while the Mets’ offense is starving their pitching, producing just 37 runs in their last 11 games, and just four through two games in this series.

Game: San Diego at Houston (8:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on San Diego +110 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 2.2)

There are not a whole lot of positives on either of these squads. Houston lost 106 games a year ago and started out looking to be vastly improved, but have regressed to what they are as the season progresses - a horribe team, as they are 9-20 over their last 29 games. Prospects here are shallow behind Lucas Harrell and his 4.77 ERA. Harrell has allowed 23 earned runs in his last 30.1 innings of work which equates to an ERA of 6.82. Clayton Richard is a quality pitcher that appears to have worked through early season problems. Richard has lowered his ERA to under 4 on the strength of his last eight starts where he worked 51 innings, allowing just 17 runs for an ERA of 3. The Astros are 0-6 when Harrell faces a losing team, and the Padres are now winners of four straight behind Richard vs. a losing team. Play on San Diego.

                          Mets @ Cubs 2:20 ET
                          Play On: Mets -115

The Mets starter Jonathan Niese has been red-hot over his last 4 starts in posting a 2.05 ERA with a 7:1 strikeout to walk ratio. In 8 starts during the day this season Niese has posted an excellent 1.75 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. The Mets are a profitable 19-11 in days games and 29-19 versus right-handed starters this season.

The Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija is 0-3 in his last 3 starts with a monster10.29 ERA and 1.86 WHIP. Samardzija's numbers at home are a bit misleading since he's been nowhere near as good in his last 3 starts at Wrigley posting a lofty 4.58 ERA. The Cubs are a dismal 4-16 versus southpaw starter this season. Play on the New York Mets.

                          Toronto @ Boston 1:35 ET
                          Play On: Boston -135

The Red Sox starter John Lester enters this afternoon in decent form off his last 3 starts with a 3.92 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and a better than 5:1 strikeout to walk ratio. In his last 3 starts versus Toronto Lester has been outstanding with a sparkling 1.42 ERA and 0.53 WHIP. Lester is 55-19 in his last 74 career team starts when pitching on 4 days rest. The Red Sox are a profitable 16-9 versus southpaw starters this season.

The Toronto starter Rickey Romero enters this afternoon in poor form off his last 3 starts posting a 5.82 ERA and 1.71 WHIP. In 14 career starts versus the Red Sox Romero has posted a lofty 6.45 ERA and 1.78 WHIP. Romero has also posted an unimpressive 4.80 ERA during the day this season.

Any home favorite of -125 to -175 that has a bullpen ERA of 3.33 or less, and they're facing a starting pitcher who allows an average of 5.5 or less hits per start this season is 157-58 (73%) since the start of the 2008 season. Play on the Boston Red Sox.
