Friday’s betting tips: Pirates struggle in St. Louis

    Who’s hot

MLB: Over is 13-3-1 in Astros last 17 road games.

MLB: Nationals are 9-3 in their last 12 road games.

CFL: Saskatchewan Roughriders are 19-7-1 ATS in their last 27 meetings.

WNBA: Under is 23-9 in the Phoenix Mercury's last 32 road games.

    Who’s not

MLB: Pirates are 5-14 in the last 19 meetings in St. Louis and are just 1-5 in their last six matchups against Friday’s starter, Adam Wainwright.

MLB: Braves are 3-9 in Randall Delgado's last 12 starts.

CFL: The over is 11-3 in the last 14 meetings between Winnipeg and British Columbia.

WNBA: The Atlanta Dream are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games overall.

    Key stat

5 – Outside of Crystal Langhorne, who scored 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting in the Washington Mystics’ latest loss, the rest of the club’s starters hit just five field goals in a 79-71 loss to Seattle. The Mystics average a league-low 68.8 points per game.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers – Braun sat out Wednesday’s game after being hit on the left elbow by a pitch Tuesday night. It was the seventh time he has been hit by a pitch this season and is listed as questionable for Friday contest against Arizona.

    Game of the day

Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants (-150, 6.5)

    Notable quotable

"We have the chance to be the best Lions team I've ever been a part of. The talent level is fine, the continuity is great, the characters on this team are good, the personalities are good, the blending is good, we don't have cancers. ... Everybody's here with the right purpose and intention, and that's very rare to find in professional sports." – British Columbia Lions veteran center Angus Reid ahead of Friday’s matchup with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, a rematch of last season’s Grey Cup which B.C. won. The Lions will have new head coach Mike Benevides on the sidelines for his debut.

    Notes and tips

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier was to undergo an MRI on a left oblique injury he picked up Wednesday. The Dodgers are bracing themselves to be without the slugger for at least a couple of weeks. He’s hitting .291 with 10 homers and 55 RBI.

An ESPN report states that Tim Hightower will be the Washington Redskins’ starting running back if he’s healthy to begin the season. He owned the starting role early last season but was losing carries to Roy Helu before he tore his ACL in Week 7.

The Tampa Rays activated designated hitter Luke Scott from the disabled list and inserted him into the lineup as their cleanup hitter Thursday. Scott has been out since June 14 with a back injury that bothered the 34-year-old during parts of the past three seasons, including the two previous years in Baltimore. Scott is batting .220 this season but provides a home-run threat in the middle of the order.

The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to send Lamar Odom to the Los Angeles Clippers in a three-team transaction that would send guard Mo Williams from the Clippers to the Utah Jazz and leave the Mavericks receiving a trade exception, the Dallas Morning News reported Thursday. By trading Odom, the Mavs do not have to buy out the final year of his contract, saving the team $2.4 million against the salary cap.

              Hondo

Free-falling Hondo plunged deeper into the red last night when he was betrayed by the Rays and Dodgers, whose failures sent the deficit soaring to 1,560 matlacks.

Tonight, Mr. Aitch will roll with Quintana (that guy can pitch, man), Verlander and Dickey. Ten units apiece.

Game: Kansas City at Minnesota (8:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: Kansas City Royals +110 (moneyline)

The Tampa Bay Rays were swept in Kansas City, and their coach said it all. He addressed the media in the post-game interview by saying Kansas City is much better than their record, and could win the AL Central. I agree with both. The Royals had a painful 12-game losing streak early in the season, but have otherwise been 34-27 on the season. They are 10-5 in their last 15 games and are riding a three-game winning streak where they have beaten opponents by a combined 21-6 count. The Twins turn to Brian Duensing who pitched decent out of the pen, but his first start was a disaster, allowing 4 runs in three innings, and until he gets things stretched out he will be on a pitch count, opening the door for the Twins' middle relief to get exposed here. The Royals are 8-1 when facing a team off of allowing 5 runs or more, while the Twins are failing miserably vs. right-hand pitching at 32-67 in their last 99. Play on Kansas City.
