Game: Detroit at Oakland (Saturday 8/25 7:00 PM Eastern)
      Pick: Oakland +3 (-115)

The Oakland Raiders have been on the short end of a pair of games that played just the opposite of each other. They lost a defensive struggle to Dallas 3-0, and then a shootout in Arizona 31-27. In his first year, Dennis Allen is needs to get his critics under control, especially after starting 0-2. That way he and his team can open the season with something to feel good about, and ease the tension. It has been a long time since the Raiders have contended, but they are close. They were 7-4 a year ago before collapsing down the stetch to miss the playoffs once again. Detroit has been great here under Jim Schwartz at 11-3, but much like Dennis Allen he had much to prove, inheriting a team that had not won in quite some time. The Lions got over the top and into the playoffs, and this game is not as important anymore. I think the Raiders are a bargain here as a home dog. The Lions have performed very badly in recent years vs. teams that are in need of a win to get off the schneid (teams off back-to-back straight-up losses). In this situation, the Lions have losing seven of their last eight ATS. Play on Oakland.

Houston Texans vs. New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints (1-2, 2-1 ATS) looked like a team with suspended
players on defense last week vs. lowly Jacksonville, while the Houston Texans
(2-0, 2-0 ATS) have looked every bit like the possible Super Bowl contenders
that some project them to be. The significance of all that is this third
week of preseason is the week that the starters play the longest, so strengths
and weaknesses will be brought to light. The two teams get together down on
The Bayou Saturday night at 8:00 ET from the Superdome in New Orleans, LA in
a game televised nationally on CBS.

The Saints will be short-handed all year with linebacker Jonathan Vilma
suspended for the whole season, and New Orleans will also be without its best
pass rusher Will Smith until Week 5 of the regular season. Both suspensions
were handed down in the wake of the Bountygate scandal that also resulted in
Head Coach Sean Payton being suspended for the year. The Saints performed
admirably on the defensive end in their first two games, but keep in mind that
their first two opponen6s, the Arizona Cardinals and the New England
Patriots, each played their starters for just a couple of possessions. The Saints
were exposed defensively last week though vs. the normally putrid Jaguars'
offense in a 27-24 loss, as perhaps one of the worst starters in the NFL in
Blaine Gabbert completed 13 of 16 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns,
and the Jaguars also added a whopping 170 rushing yards. Moreover, remember
that Maurice Jones-Drew is still holding out, and it was Rashad Jennings
leading the way with 62 rushing yards in 11 carries (5.6 YPC). The Saints should
have no worries on the offensive end and they did accumulate 416 yards vs.
the Jags, but they will not have things as easy as usual vs. the first string
Houston defense for nearly three quarters.

The best news about the Texans' 20-9 beatdown of the 49ers last week was
that Andre Johnson saw his first game action since aggravating a groin in one
of the first days of training camp, and he seemed fully healthy on a 43-yard
reception. With Johnson and quarterback Matt Schaub both now healthy after
injury plagued 2011 campaigns, it gives Houston amazing balance as it now
has a very good passing offense to go with the best running game in football
led by Arian Foster and Ben Tate. And don't forget about the defense, which
improved by leaps and bounds after hiring Wade Phillips as the defensive
coordinator last year and that has continued to impress this season, as the
Texans suffocated one of the best offenses in the NFL on the road in Carolina
26-13 before last week's second stellar defensive showing. Yes, Houston lost
sack specialist Mario Williams to Buffalo in free agency, but you must
remember he was lost for the season fairly early last year and there was no
noticeable drop-off in the Houston defense, and that has continued this preseason.

Houston's Coach Gary Kubiak is now 15-11 during preseason with the two wins
this year, although he is just 3-3 in Week 3 dress rehearsals. Then again,
he may now be coaching the best team in Texans franchise history.

Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

              STREAKING

Hiroki Kuroda, New York Yankees (12-8, 2.96)

Kuroda continued his run of exceptional starts on Sunday, holding the Red Sox to a single run over eight innings to pick up his 12th win of the season. The right-hander has surrendered only eight runs over his last seven starts heading into action Saturday in Cleveland.

Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants (14-7, 2.83)

Bumgarner racked up 10 strikeouts over eight shutout innings of a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers last time out and has put together a string of eight consecutive quality starts. The 23-year-old looks to extend that streak to nine when the Giants host the Braves.

              SLUMPING

Dan Haren, Los Angeles Angels (8-10, 4.90)

Haren has taken back-to-back losses, surrendering 10 earned runs in his last seven innings pitched. Manager Mike Scioscia recently said he will consider using a four-man rotation if Haren can’t step up in his next outing in Detroit.

Josh Johnson, Miami Marlins (7-10, 3.73)

Johnson has taken the loss in three consecutive starts despite only allowing seven earned runs during that span. The Marlins have only provided the right-hander with three runs of support over his last three outings heading into a tough road battle in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

What bettors need to know: Week 3 preseason (Sat)

There are seven games this weekend in NFL preseason action as teams prepare to cut their rosters to 75 players Monday. We give you the essential tidbits on 6 of them to make your wagers.

                SATURDAY

Indianapolis Colts at Washington Redskins (-3, 43)

The No. 1 and 2 picks in the draft, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, meet in a matchup that has about as much hype as you can stand for a preseason game.

Colts owner Jim Irsay was Tweeting about a potential big trade Thursday night, so you might want to be cautious with betting Indy in case of any major personnel changes. That said, Indy has 62 points through two preseason games (most in the league) and has covered both spreads.

Washington’s starters are expected to play about three quarters. Fans are calling for the Skins to let RG3 air it out more but Washington still has to sort out its backfield before Week 1.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Buffalo Bills (+2, 40.5)

The Steelers fired special teams coach Al Everest this week in a strange move in spite of great special teams play from the Steelers the past couple years. Mike Wallace ended his holdout and is expected back Saturday night, which gives the Steelers their top receiver back.

The Bills’ defense got picked apart last week by Minnesota in a 36-14 loss. Not a good sign for the worst red zone defense in the NFL last season. They’ve only generated 20 points through two games also as they try to determine who their backup QB is – Vince Young or Tyler Thigpen - and figure out their top five receivers.

Detroit Lions at Oakland Raiders (+3, 44)

Lions head coach Jim Schwartz says he treats exhibition games as dress rehearsals and has ‘no set plans’ for how long the starters will play Saturday. He said the staff will ‘take it as it comes’ and they’d like to play well and win the game as the top two priorities.

The first-team offense doesn’t have a touchdown yet for the Raiders and QB Carson Palmer has struggled in the first two preseason games, both losses. Palmer told the San Fran Chronicle the preseason is more about trying out new plays and coach Gregg Knapp agrees. "I will sacrifice some of the ups and downs that go with that,” he said. The starters are expected to play at least the first half Saturday.

                    Hondo

Hondo scored big time with the ’Stros against Bill Maher’s Mets last night but gave half of it back with the Royals, so the deficit was reduced only to 2,340 brecheens.

Today, Mr. Aitch will open with that Bumgarner over Los Bravos — 10 units on the Giants. Tonight, he’ll run with the Royals over Slosh Beckett and the Sawx – 10 units on Guthrie.
