What Bettors Need to Know: Sunday's NFL Action

There are two games this Sunday in NFL preseason action as teams prepare to cut their rosters to 75 players Monday. We give you the essential tidbits to make your wagers.

Carolina Panthers at New York Jets (-2.5, 41)

The first team offense is clicking early for the Panthers and they scored a field-goal and two touchdowns in their first-quarter drives against Miami last game. Receiver Steve Smith missed a practice this week with a sore ankle so the first team could be missing him Sunday.

The Jets have said they’re not going to unleash the Wildcat in the preseason so Tim Tebow fans are just going to have to wait. In the meantime, Rex Ryan says he’d like to see Mark Sanchez air it out a little more. He might have wide receiver Santanio Holmes back Sunday night to help him do that.

San Francisco 49ers at Denver Broncos (-1, 40)

San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith was sacked twice and hit had on several other occasions during his three series of action in last week's 20-9 loss to the Houston Texans. Smith was sacked a career-high 44 times last campaign, more than any other NFL quarterback. Developing schemes to protect the quarterback will be the club's focus on Sunday.

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning told the Denver Post the starters haven't been informed how long they'll play on Sunday against the 49ers. However, the pivot suggested the group might not be in the game as long because they played more than expected against the Seahawks in Week 2 of the preseason. Manning has completed 20 of 30 pass attempts for 221 yards this preseason and has been picked off three times.

The Broncos hold an 18-15 advantage in their all-time preseason series with San Francisco and have prevailed in nine of the last 11 warm-up contests between the clubs.

Sunday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

      STREAKING

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (12-10, 3.65)

Wainwright tossed a complete game shutout against the Astros, while giving up just five hits and striking out 12 in his last outing. The right-hander has won four consecutive starts, allowing only four earned runs over his past 31 innings pitched. He has a tough road start against division-rival Cincinnati next time out.

Max Scherzer, Detroit Tigers (13-6, 4.27)

Scherzer allowed one run on five hits over seven innings of a 5-3 win over Toronto on Tuesday night. The righty has picked up wins in three consecutive starts, only surrendering three earned runs during that stretch. He’ll face the Angels at home in his next outing.

      SLUMPING

Joe Saunders, Arizona Diamondbacks (6-10, 4.22)

After giving up nine runs on 12 hits over 3 2/3 innings against the Marlins on Monday, Saunders was placed on waivers by the D-Backs on Tuesday. The lefty has taken the loss in four of his last five starts and is on the verge of losing his spot in the starting rotation to Tyler Skaggs. He tries to turn things around at home against the Padres on Sunday.

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (8-11, 5.63)

Romero allowed five runs on seven hits, while walking eight in a 5-3 loss to Detroit on Tuesday. The lefty is in a free fall, dropping 10 of his last 11 starts after beginning the campaign 8-1. His last win came on June 22 in Miami. He draws the Orioles in his next start.

Sunday Night Baseball: Giants at Braves
        By Steve Merril

A rare non-divisional match-up on Sunday Night Baseball as the Giants host the Braves.

        ACE NO MORE

Tim Lincecum has fallen on hard times this season. The righty is 7-13 with a 5.30 ERA and 151 strikeouts in 146 innings of work. The former Giants’ ace has not seen Atlanta since Aug. 18, 2011, when he lost 1-0 to the Braves on the road. Lincecum surrendered one run and five hits in seven innings, while striking out seven in that contest. "The Freak" is slowly turning the ship around after a slow start this campaign. Lincecum has allowed two runs or less five times over his last eight starts.

        HUDSON'S HEROES

Tim Hudson is like a fine wine that gets better with age. Hudson is 12-4 with a 3.69 ERA in 134 innings of work, but is no longer is the strikeout pitcher he used to be as he only has 82 this season. He last faced the Giants back on Jul. 19, picking up the win at home. Hudson allowed two runs and eight hits in just over seven innings of work in that start. The right-hander has been rock solid as of late giving up two runs or less in five of his last ten starts. However, he has given up three runs or more in three consecutive road starts in Miami, Philadelphia, and Washington.

        INJURY REPORT

The health of these two teams has been relatively good for the most part. The Giants are obviously dealing with the 50-game suspension of Melky Cabrera, who solidified the middle of their lineup. Joining him on the sidelines are pitchers Guillermo Mota and Brian Wilson, as well as hitters Aubrey Huff and Freddy Sanchez. The Braves’ problems come in the rotation, as they are without Jair Jurrjens and Brandon Beachy. Tommy Hanson isn't 100 percent as he continues to deal with a lower back strain.

        TRENDS

Braves are 6-1 in Hudson’s last seven road starts

Braves are 6-2 Over in Hudson's last eight road starts vs. winning teams

Giants are 6-20 in Lincecum’s last 26 starts with four days of rest

Giants are 8-3-2 Under their last 13 Sunday games

        HITTERS TO WATCH

Michael Bourn is 5-for-21 vs. Lincecum (.238)

Brian McCann is 9-for-27 vs. Lincecum (.333)

Angel Pagan is 11-for-31 vs. Hudson (.355)

Pablo Sandoval is 2-for-14 vs. Hudson (.143)

                      Hondo

The Royals rallied heroically for Hondo last night against the Sawx, enabling him to minimize the damage from his loss with the Giants and close business hours with a slightly increased deficit of 2,345 herreras.

Today, Mr. Aitch expects Zimmerman to provide some cheers against Cliffy and the Phillies— 10 units on the Nationals.

San Francisco 49ers at Denver Broncos
                              Prediction: San Francisco 49ers

5* graded play on the San Francisco 49ers as they take on the Denver Broncos in NFL exhibition action set to start at 4:00 PM ET, Sunday, August 26, 2012 . Both teams are 1-1 in the NFLX season and the 49ers will be looking to focus on the defensive side of the ball for this game.

The 49ers won the first game of the NFLX 17-6 over Minnesota and covered as three point favorites. The UNDER was a cashing ticket in easy fashion with a 34 point posted total at most shops. In Game 2, the 49ers lost at Houston 20-9 and failed to cover as three point dogs. The UNDER cashed easily with a lined total for 38 points for that game,

In the first game against the Vikings, the 49ers offensive units were strong running the ball and gained 260 rushing yards on 42 carries. However, the running game stumbled a bit as many of the offensive line missed zone block assignments. It was not a horrid running game for the 49ers as they did gain 118 yards on 24 carries. The running game, though is something that will be near the top for the priority list in this game.

I do think the 49ers will have a significant advantage against the Denver defense in play action sets. The 49ers have completed 37 passes of 67 attempts for 391 pasing yards in their first two games. The focus on the running game will provide any of the 49ers quarterbacks with significant vertical routes using play action.

The Peyton Manning era has begun for the Denver Broncos. Denver destroyed the Chicago Bears in their first preseason game 31-3 and covered as three point road dogs. Despite the high scoring outburst by the Broncos the total was a push lined at 34 points. Manning was the second quarterback to enter the game and was 4-for-7 with a horrid 35.7 quarterback rating. In the second game, the Broncos lost to the Seattle Seahawks 30-10 with a pick-em line and the UNDER won by the slimmest of margins with a posted total of 40 at most shops.

In the 30-10 loss to Seattle, Manning started and played extensively completing 16-of-23 pass attempts for 1177 passing yards, but had two interceptions and a terrible 55.9 quarterback rating. he is showing rust to say the least and I believe the 49ers defense will not allow him any chance to get into his old form even though this is a meaningless game.

                              Simulator Projections

The simulator shows a high probability that the 49ers will easily win this game by five or more points. The simulator also shows a high probability that Denver will gain less than 100 rushing yards in this game. In past NFLX games, Denver is just 3-13 ATS when they rush for between 75 and 100 rushing yards.

                              First-Half Total Opportunity

With both teams having either low production on the scoreboard or erratic results, they will be looking to establish a consistent effort in the first half, which I believe will lead to points.

Supporting this opportunity is a system that has produced a record of 26-7 for 79% winners since 1993. Play OVER with home teams against the first half total after a loss by 14 or more points and is now facing an opponent after scoring 14 points or less last game. Consider a fast start by the 49ers and for the combined score to go OVER the first half total. For the game, I like the 49ers as a 5* graded play.
