      Larry Ness' 10* Non-Conf G.O.M. (80 & 92% winning situations s/1999)

10* Non-Conf Game of the Month is on Iowa St at 3:30 ET.
Tulsa and Iowa St open their respective 2012 seasons in the second-ever meeting between the two schools (Iowa State defeated Tulsa 27-6 back in 1961 in the only other meeting between these two programs, which is hardly relevant). Tulsa hit rock-bottom with back-to-back seasons of 1-10 and 1-11 in 2001 and 2002. However, the Golden Hurricane are a collective 73-44 the last nine seasons, with SEVEN bowl appearances. Tulsa has averaged averaged 40 PPG in THREE of the last five season, failing to do so in 2009 (29.3) and again last year at 33.1. Paul Smith and David Johnson had outstanding years as the team's QB and GJ Kinne has followed in their footsteps the last tfew seasons, especially last year (63.3% / 3,090 yards / 28-12) . Taking over at QB this season is Nebraska transfer Cody Green, who threw 5 TDs and 3 INTs in limited action as a backup in Lincoln the past couple of seasons. Green has outstanding size (6-4, 247) and a big arm but I’m skeptical that he will continue the team’s vertical passing attack. Tulsa uses use a running back-by-committee strategy in the backfield to great success (192 YPG / 4.8 YPC in 2011) and the team’s three leading rushers from a year ago all return in Douglas (7.9 YPC), Watts (5.6 YPC) and Singleton (goal- line specialist who scored eight TDs). FB Willie Carter carried just 13 times for 54 yards but led the team in receptions with 61 (7 TDs). The Tulsa defense was suspect in 2011 (27.3 PPG / 415 YPG) and that’s hardly new, as the team has allowed an average of just over 29 PPG the last five seasons, as well as almost 420 YPG. Playing in the high-powered Big 12, Iowa State's offense didn’t match up. However, don’t ask Oklahoma St, which lost a likely chance at the BCS title game when it lost 37-31 in OT at Ames last November 18 (Cyclones were 27-point underdogs). Iowa St entered that game 0-56-2 against teams ranked sixth or higher in the AP poll (Cowboys were ranked No. 2) and overcame a 17-point deficit to win. Steele Jantz and Jared Barnett split time in 2011 at the QB position and while Barnett led the win against OSU, it’s Jantz who has been named the the team’s opening-game starter. ISU is a middle-of-the-pack Big 12 team but for C-USA’s Tulsa, it’s a step up in class on the road. Tulsa is a WOEFUL 1-17 SU on the road vs BCS schools since 1997 and 0-15 SU (3-12 ATS) since 1999 against Big 12 opponents, home or away. More bad history comes Tulsa’s way in that the Golden Hurricane are just 3-14 SU and 4-12-1 ATS in road openers since 1995. In comparison, the Cyclones are 12-1 SU in their last 13 home openers. At this price, Iowa St provides great value considering Tulsa is an 80% ATS “go-against” vs Big 12 opponents since 1999 and ISU a 92% “play on” in home openers SU during that same time frame.
