The Falcons had it a little too easy last week. First of all, they got turnovers that put the offense on short fields three times at Kansas City. Also, the Chiefs’ best pass rusher Tamba Hali was out, as was the starting nose tackle, a starting corner, and a starting safety. When “Downfield Dirk” Koetter, the new offensive coordinator, sends his receiv- ers out against the Broncos’ defense, they will be covered better in the secondary, and Matt Ryan will be pressured more seriously by ends you know about – Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller. Meanwhile, if Peyton Manning had played in the same conference as the Atlanta defense all these years, his stats would have been even better than they are. New coordinator Mike Nolan has a chance to make a difference, but this group wasn’t stopping the Chiefs last week until they got turnovers on three straight possessions to start the third quarter. You can’t always go in the locker room at halftime and decide that your adjustment will be to get turnovers, and then actually get them. Especially when Peyton Manning is the other team’s quarterback. Thinking ‘road dog’ early on here. ATLANTA, 22-21.

Sixth Sense

ATLANTA –3 Denver 51.5

This should be a great game to watch and probably a high scoring game. If favored by three or less, Atlanta qualifies in a home momentum situation, which is 91-47-10. Denver qualifies in a fundamental rushing situation, which is 684-536-38 but they don’t qualify in the best part of that situation. Tough to make a number on this game using last years stats but using week ones stats I would make Atlanta a three point favorite. Atlanta lost their best secondary player last week in Brent Grimes. He is out for the year. Atlanta can score points at home and their offense appears to be even better this year. Last year they scored at least 23 points in all but one home game. Against good offenses, they allowed 31, 25 and 26 points so I expect Denver to be able to score here as well. Peyton Manning instantly makes an offense that much better and he has enough targets on this Denver team to be very good. I looked back at Peyton Manning offenses and in only three of the last 31 road games Manning played in over the last eight years, did his teams fail to score 20 points or more. A fourth game was the last game of the year at Buffalo where he exited early. Peyton Manning teams will score points and you can just about count on his team scoring at least 20+ points in this game. Atlanta should obviously score as well. I lean to the over in this game and if this line would move to –3.5 I would lean harder to Denver. ATLANTA 30 DENVER 27

Atlanta’s new high-powered passing attack was sharp opening week with Julio Jones living up to all the preseason hype. He is the second-best wideout next to Calvin Johnson. The Falcons were able to take advantage of Kansas City’s many defensive backfield injuries and not having their best pass rusher. The Falcons do get to play on their fast home track, but will encounter a stronger defense than Kansas City. Peyton Manning is 36 and off four neck surgeries. Manning showed opening week that he still has enough to win a shootout against Matt Ryan. Manning will be helped if the Falcons are minus cornerback Brent Grimes, who suffered a calf injury against the Chiefs. ATLANTA 25-21.

ATLANTA -3 -108 over Denver
Both teams played extremely well in respective openers but the Broncos lose the home field advantage they enjoyed last week. The Falcons rarely lose at home. That said, the Dirty Birds racked up 40 points last week on K.C. at always tough Arrowhead. Atlanta’s defense shut down the Chiefs attack in second half and they sacked Matt Cassel three times.

While we respect the Broncos, they may be up against it here. With its newly acquired quarterback, Denver was just featured in a huge Sunday night rematch of last year’s playoff contest with the Steelers. Right away, Peyton Manning and the Broncos will be featured again, on a Monday night in the Georgia Dome where the Falcons are 19-5 straight up the past three years. It’s not only a letdown spot for Denver but that impressive win has their stock far too high this week.

If Atlanta is truly ready to take the next step, they have to win games like this one. In its home opener, with the stars they employ at the skill positions, we’re comfy spotting a FG here.
