    MLB ML - Wednesday, Oct 10 2012 1:07PM
    ML 925 STL (+102) 5dimes vs 926 WAS double-dime bet

Analysis: Chris Carpenter is one of the best big-game pitchers of all-time. Carpenter is 9-2 with a 3.05 ERA in post-season.

Carpenter tuned-up for the playoffs by making three regular-season starts down the stretch. He didn't give up more than three earned runs in any of those outings. He is 6-1 lifetime against the Nationals wi €th a 3.27 ERA.

The Cardinals bats going going in the last meeting scoring 12 runs. They face Edwin Jackson, who is the weak link in Washington's excellent starting rotation. Jackson has a 4.91 post-season ERA. Washington was 12-19 in Jackson's starts this season.

I could see the Nationals being tight for this matchup, too, since this is the first time they are hosting a playoff game since 1933.

    ML 929 BAL (+155) 5dimes vs 930 NYY double-dime bet

Analysis: These teams are very evenly-matched so there's good value at this price with Baltimore.

The Orioles beat the Yankees in six of nine games at Yankee Stadium this season. They are 30-9 in one-run games and haven't lost in 76 games when leading after seven innings.

I like Yankee starter Hiroki Kuroda. But I also like Baltimore's Miguel Gonzalez. He's in good form having not allowing more than two earned runs during five of his last six starts.

Gonzalez was 2-0 versus New York with 17 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings.

3-unit Play Take #928 Cincinnati Reds (-140) over San Francisco Giants (4:07pm EST) Game 4 of the National League Division Series goes this afternoon in Cincinnati where the Reds get another chance to eliminate the San Francisco Giants. Cincinnati has dominated this series thus far, outscoring the Giants 15-4 combined in the first three games. Homer Bailey turned in a gem in yesterday's game as he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Unfortunately the Reds offense didn't do their part and the Giants were able to win it 2-1 in extra innings. Dominant pitching has been the story for the Reds this series, and today Mike Leake will be called on to keep that going. Leake wasn't even on the playoff roster until Johnny Cueto was injured in Game 1. As a result, I think he'll be pitching with a chip on his shoulder today. Leake had an up and down season at 8-9 with a 4.58 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, but he was very unlucky. His home run rate was enormous for the amount of flyballs that he threw and that statistic usually regresses to the mean. With just average luck on home runs, his ERA is probably in the mid-3's this season.

The Reds will go up against southpaw Barry Zito in today's game. It's somewhat surprising that the Giants selected Zito as the fourth starter for this series when Tim Lincecum probably had the best second half of anyone in their rotation. Zito was 15-8 on the season, but his ERA was at 4.15 and his WHIP was 1.39 -and those numbers were in an extreme pitcher's park. At this point in his career, he's definitely a liability on the mound and not the guy you want pitching trailing the series 2-1. On top of that, the Reds were much better against left-handed pitching this season. Their OPS against right-handers was only .710, but against lefties they were 60 points better at .770. That was the biggest righty/lefty split in the league. I don't expect either one of today's starting pitchers to make it through six innings, so the bullpens will be a huge factor. That's an advantage for the Reds as they have several dominant arms in their pen including flame-thrower Aroldis Chapman. The Giants pen isn't terrible, but if this one is close in the late innings, I like the Reds to pull it out.
