4 Unit Play. #611. Take Niagara +12 over Oregon State (Friday @ 9pm est).
Niagara is a much improved team from last year. I have them as a top 100 team in my power rankings this year (there are 347 college basketball programs in the country). Niagara recently acquired a solid center from La Salle in Devon White who has already graduated from La Salle but still has a year of eligibility still remaining. He will be inserted into the lineup right away for this team. Plus, this is a team that finished 14-19 last year and returns most of their talent with the addition of White. I also believe in strong point guard play and this team has a dynamic point guard in Juan'ya Green who was a freshman last year that averaged 17.7 points per game. Now, he is a sophomore and will look to take care of the ball much better plus he has offensive options such as Antoine Mason and (15.1ppg) and Ameen Tanksley (8.7ppg). Essentially, this team has 4 players that can score in double-digits who have been accustomed to playing with each other as well. The two losses on this team were from individuals that were only getting a combined total of less than 12 minutes per game. These two teams did not meet last year nor do they have a history of meeting each other and I look for Niagara to be up for this game significantly more than Oregon State who has New Mexico State who is on the horizon. This is a decent underdog for us to hang tough on the road against a good Oregon State team. I like the fact this is a relatively late tip-off as well which allows for a decent public fade.

Indian Cowboy's Picks For NBA Basketball

    4-Unit Play. #512. Take Memphis -7 over Houston (Friday @ 8:05pm est).

I know everyone is high on Houston and I get it, above-average point-guard in Lin (yes, I do believe he is good) and a legitimate star (a first draft pick if you remember by OKC) in Harden with a core group of role players. Granted, they could certainly use a big man presence but maybe that will be Terrance Jones and Aldrich playing into that role eventually. Yes, Houston beat a good Atlanta team outright and no doubt about that. But, that was Atlanta's first game getting their feet wet. Their other win was against Detroit and well, they're Detroit so although a win is a win not one to necessarily to hang your hat on. This team then lost to Portland and Denver at home both of whom are decent teams who I have as top 20 power ranking teams. Now, this team has to play a very good Memphis team who I have 7th in my power rankings. What we are asking Houston to do is difficult as if they could not beat a top 20 team at home, it will be tough to beat a top 10 team on the road. Memphis did lose to the Clippers who are a solid team and then went on the road to beat Golden State, beat Utah at home and just crushed Milwaukee on the road. Memphis will get up for this game too given the headlines that Houston has made and the stars they bring to Memphis. I like Memphis here to win this game and quite possibly to even win this game big as they also have revenge from last year's losses to Houston as well. The Rockets are 0-5 ATS when facing teams with a winning record and the Grizzlies do well against winning teams at home in covering the spread as they are 17-5 ATS against such teams at home.

          5-Unit Play. Take #581 Towson (+16) over Charleston (7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9)
Note: This was going to be a 6-Unit Play. But I backed it down to a 5-Unit Game of the Week play.

This is the perfect example of why I like nonconference college basketball handicapping. People don't know what to expect from these two teams. Towson is coming out with four new starters and just five players back from one of the 10 worst teams in the country last year. Towson went 1-31 and was just pathetic. However, they played one of the toughest schedules of any mid-major team in the nation, spending the entirety of November and December getting throttled by excellent teams like Kansas, Michigan, Belmont, UMass, George Mason, LaSalle, Oregon State, Manhattan, Vermont and Virginia. Five of those teams went to the NCAA Tournament, and Towson faced them with a new coach and a ragtag roster from the previous administration.

But this is a completely different Towson team. Completely different. The Tigers retained their best two players from last year, Marcus Damas and Kris Walden. And they added three big-time transfers from BCS schools: Mike Burwell (South Florida), Jerrelle Benimon (Georgetown) and Bilal Dixon (Providence). Add in a 6-3 freshman point guard, Jerome Hairston, and Towson is big, athletic and experienced. They go 6-3, 6-5, 6-7, 6-8 and 6-9 now with BCS athleticism in the starting lineup. These guys don't really know the system and they haven't played together yet.

Charleston is learning a new system under a new coach as well, Doug Wojicik takes over a very experienced and talented team. But the Cougars are trying to get on without their best player, Antwain Wiggins, who did it all for this group last year. Charleston is not bigger or stronger than Towson and I do not think that they will dominate them. And Towson will play its starters a lot of minutes because it is the first game of the season.

Also, a lot of basketball lovers will be over in Mt. Pleasant watching Ohio State-Marquette play on an aircraft carrier. So this game, even though it is the opener, will have a second-rate feel to it. That will sap some of the energy out of the gym and lead to a further sloppy, tight game.

Look, Towson probably isn't going to win this game. But they could. And they aren't going to lose by 18 or 20 points. And that is what it takes to lose against a number like this. Charleston has games with St. John's and Baylor on deck. They are definitely more interested in those and I'm sure they see one of the worst teams in basketball coming to town and they think this will be like another exhibition game. This team played up and down to competition last year, winning by just 9 in the opener against Holy Cross and then posting losses or close wins against a host of low-rated teams in conference play. The Cougars didn't shoot well, they didn't rebound all that well, and they don't make free throws. They are not the type of team that is going to just step out and lay a beating.

          3-Unit Play. Take #575 Stanford (-13) over San Francisco (11 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9)

Stanford should win this game by about 30. San Francisco is in shambles. They were a very good team last year and a group that I cashed in on often. But they lost everyone - and I mean everyone - and they are barely fielding a legitimate roster right now. That is why this number is so high despite the fact that Stanford is on the road. San Fran lost its four top scorers and five of its top eight players and they are completely retooling. Stanford is the opposite. The Cardinal has five of its top six scorers back in the fold from a team that won the NIT title last year. They have great guards and solid athleticism and I think that they are going to be sharp out of the gate tonight. This one should get ugly in the second half and I think that Johnny Dawkins' team will get ahead of this number.

          2.5-Unit Play. Take #608 Colorado State (-8.5) over Montana (9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9)

This game is setting up to be a mismatch. Colorado State is dynamite at home and new coach Larry Eustachy is going to want to make a statement. Colorado State has one of the most experienced teams in the country, with four starters back from last year's NCAA Tournament team. That includes a pair of three-year starters in the backcourt. But what's better is that this team has added two BCS transfers in guard Dan Bejarano (Arizona) and especially massive center Colton Iverson (Minnesota). Iverson gives this team the post presence that it so badly needed last season. This group has five senior starters and even more experience coming off the bench and they will be ready to rock at altitude.

Montana, on the other hand, has just two starters back from last year's Big Sky champions. Their best player, and the best player in the conference, is Will Cherry. He is out until December and that leaves a massive hole for this group to fill. That also means that Montana has just two of its top seven players back from last year's squad. The three new starters and the sixth man combined to average a combined 6.0 points per game between them. Kareem Jamar is going to try to carry this team. But I think Colorado State will be able to lock down on him.

The difference between the Big Sky (No. 26) and Mountain West (No. 6) conferences is massive. So is the difference between these two teams. Colorado State won by six at home against Montana last year. They are even better this time around, while the Grizz are much worse. This one looks more like the 30-point Colorado State win when these two teams played here back in 2008. Lay the big number.

          2-Unit Play. Take #563 Maryland (+10.5) over Kentucky (8:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9)

Look, I know that the Wildcats are loaded with NBA talent. I know that they are the defending national champions. And I know that they are allegedly one of the best teams in the country. What I don't know is that they are good enough - right now - to go out and lay the wood on a neutral court to an experienced Maryland team. Mark Turgeon was always a master in the underdog role when he was at Texas A&M. And the Terps program has always been known for its grit and toughness. I think that is exactly what it is going to take tonight against a Wildcats team that is completely rebuilding. Kentucky lost its top six players from last year's team - and they only played seven guys. The key Wildcats tonight are all a bunch of dudes that were going to prom a few months ago. Now they are going to Brooklyn to take on a Maryland team that has been through some battles and is ready to make a statement. Kentucky wins, but this game isn't going to be a blowout. I am a big proponent that freshmen, in general, suck. And last year's Kentucky team was an exception to the rule - bolstered by some very experienced players like Jones, Lamb and Miller. This Kentucky team isn't there yet. I think Maryland gives them all they can handle.

2-Unit Play. Take Fordham (+2) over Texas State (8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9)

I released this play in the newsletter and just about nailed the spread on the nose (I projected +1.5). If you had told me two years ago that I would ever be jumping all over a short Fordham line with the Rams on the road would've thought you were crazy. But this Rams team is improving and it is bolstered by the best player you have never heard of: Chris Gaston. The senior forward is an absolute beast and he has averaged a double-double for his career. Gaston hasn't had much help, but his supporting cast is a bit better this year. Branden Frazier is a three-year starter and this group has four starters back from a team that won 10 games last year. That may not sound impressive, but compared to where Fordham was just three years ago it is major progress. Texas State was a weak team in the Southland last year. They have just two returning starters and they are just stepping up in class this year as they join the depleted WAC. They aren't any good. Fordham actually beat Texas State by 11 points at home last year. While you might think that would give TSU some sort of revenge angle, the fact is that Fordham is even better this year and the Bobcats are not. A change in venue isn't going to change that. This one is all about relative conference strength. And I will go with an A-10 bottom feeder over a Southland bottom feeder any day of the week.

          1.5-Unit Play. Take #597 UT-Martin (+9) over Arkansas-Little Rock (8 p.m., Fri., Nov. 9)

          1-Unit Play. Take #611 Niagara (+12) over Oregon State (9 p.m.)

          1-Unit Play. Take #559 Toledo (+3) over Loyola (8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9)

          1-Unit Play. Take #562 LSU (-9) over UC-Santa Barbara (8 p.m.)

Below are some 5-point teasers. If you don't like, don't understand, or don't want to play these then just ignore them. Consider them ?bonus plays? and I have enough rated sides to turn a profit tonight. But I utilize these from time to time and I think that they offer solid value as a way to throw the odds in our favor. I definitely will NOT be using this many throughout the season. And in six years I've never used this many in one night. But this is a massive opening day board and there is some nice value out there, so I'm going to leave no stone unturned. But, again, do not worry about this becoming a habit.
