Akron at Toledo: 9 things bettors should know
Akron at Toledo (-18.5)
-The Toledo Rockets are ranked 31st on offense, averaging 455.8 yards per game. The Rockets are averaging 203.1 yards rushing and 252.7 yards passing so far this season.
-The Akron Zips are ranked 40th on offense, averaging 435.8 yards per game. The Zips are averaging 118.7 yards rushing and 317.1 yards passing so far this season.
-The Rockets are 4-1 at home (3-2 ATS) this season and 5-2 against conference opponents.
-The Zips are 0-5 on the road (4-1 ATS) this season and 0-7 against conference opponents.
-The Zips are 1-5 ATS in their last six meetings with the Rockets, who are 0-5 ATS in their last five Tuesday games.
-Toledo, which has lost two straight, saw its shot at the MAC West title go up in smoke with a Week 12 31-24 loss to Northern Illinois.
-Toledo RB David Fluellen suffered an ankle injury November 14th against Northern Illinois. He is questionable to play Tuesday against Akron. Fluellen has rushed for 1,456 yards this season and averages 5.8 yards per carry.
-Akron has lost eight straight games, covering three times during that stretch.
-Although Akron has yet to post a win over a FBS opponent, its quarterback poses a challenge to a Rockets’ pass defense that ranks 120th in the nation. Senior Dalton Williams leads the MAC with 303.2 passing yards per game, and has thrown a league-high 25 touchdowns. -
Brooklyn Nets at L.A. Lakers: What bettors need to know
Brooklyn Nets at Los Angeles Lakers (-6.5, 208.5)
The Brooklyn Nets are getting accustomed to playing on a bigger stage following the franchise's offseason move from New Jersey. The lights will be even brighter when they arrive in Hollywood for a matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday in what is expected to be Mike D'Antoni's coaching debut with Kobe Bryant and company. D'Antoni, who is recuperating from knee-replacement surgery, had planned to be on the bench for Sunday's home win against Houston, but opted to watch his second straight game from the locker room amid concerns of a lack of mobility in the event players crashed into the bench.
While Los Angeles has won four of five since coach Mike Brown was fired on Nov. 9, Brooklyn has been even hotter. The Nets ran their winning streak to five games with a 99-90 victory at Sacramento on Sunday in the first of a three-game California road trip. Brooklyn will get its first glance at center Dwight Howard in a Lakers uniform. The Nets were rebuffed in numerous attempts to acquire the former Orlando Magic superstar before opting to trade for All-Star shooting guard Joe Johnson in the offseason.
TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), Time Warner Cable SportsNet (Los Angeles), NBA TV
ABOUT THE NETS (6-2, 4-2-2 ATS): Brooklyn had been playing shorthanded with injuries to forward Gerald Wallace and MarShon Brooks, but both finally returned to the lineup and the added depth led to a 52-point effort from the bench against the Kings, led by Andray Blatche with 22. Center Brook Lopez had been mentioned as the main bargaining chip in last year's trade talks for Howard, but he suffered a broken foot just before the start of last season. Lopez had a string of three straight 20-point efforts snapped in Sacramento but is averaging 22.8 points lifetime against the Lakers.
ABOUT THE LAKERS (5-5, 5-5 ATS): It may not exactly rival the "Showtime" days of Magic Johnson and the Laker teams of the 1980s, but Los Angeles clearly has embraced the up-tempo style instituted by D'Antoni since he started running practices late last week. Kobe Bryant collected his first triple-double since November 2010 with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists against the Rockets. "He just lets us go out there and play," Bryant said of D'Antoni. "We're just picking apart the defense. We're putting the defense in predicaments where they have to choose and we're making them pay."
TRENDS:
* Under is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings.
* Over is 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings in Los Angeles.
* Road team is 12-4-2 ATS in the last 18 meetings.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. Los Angeles has won the last eight meetings against the Nets.
2. The Nets are seeking their first six-game winning streak since running off 14 straight toward the end of the 2006 season.
3. The Lakers averaged 116.5 points in the last two games despite the absences of starting point guard Steve Nash (leg) and backup Steve Blake (abdominal).Comment

Akron Zips vs. Toledo Rockets Point Spread - Pick
Akron Zips (1-10 SU, 5-6 ATS) vs. Toledo Rockets (8-3 SU, 7-4 ATS)
College Football Week 13
Date/Time: Tuesday, November 20th, 2012, 7:00 p.m. EST
Where: Glass Bowl, Toledo, Ohio
TV: ESPN2
by Badger, Football Handicapper
Point Spread: Akr +18.5/TOL -18.5
Over/Under Total: OFF
The Mid-American Conference and their early-week feature games on ESPN2 will come to a close this Tuesday night when the Toledo Rockets welcome the Akron Zips into the Glass Bowl in the season finale for both teams.
For Toledo the finale may be a little bittersweet since they had high hopes for the season and dreams of a possible MAC title shot, only to see those hopes and dreams come crashing back down to Earth following back-to-back losses the past two weeks. The Rockets had a glimmer of hope following their, 34-27, loss to Ball State two weeks ago, but all hope was lost for good when they fell short of an upset at Northern Illinois last Wednesday, 31-24.
Now the Rockets will try and get their ninth win of the season and get prepped for a Bowl bid when they take on Akron in the finale.
Chances of getting that ninth win are pretty solid too, considering the Zips continue to be the laughingstock of the MAC with their 1-10 record. If not for a gimme win over Morgan State back in September, Akron would be winless … again, since they've lost eight straight including the last time they played on November 10th, a 22-14 loss to MAC newcomer Massachusetts.
The oddsmakers aren't expecting much of a game in the finale either, setting the opening point spread with Toledo as 18.5-point favorites at home.
As of press time the over/under total is still off the board.
The biggest question that needs to be answered when handicapping this game is simple … can Akron stop the Rockets from running up the score? Or in another way of putting it, can they score enough to hang around and keep it within the three-score point spread on this game.
Akron's defense allows 449 yards a game and 35.3 points per game, but in the world of the MAC (where defense is a four-letter word) that's actually good enough to rank them 7th and 11th in the 13-team league, respectively. When you look at what the Toledo offense brings to the table (456 ypg; 32.7 ppg), it's not hard to see that the Rockets might turn the game on Wednesday into a track meet with guys like David Fluellen (133 ypg rushing), Bernard Reedy (168.8 all-purp. ypg) and Terrance Owens (278 total offense ypg) knocking each other over to get the ball and take it to the house.
But Akron quarterback Dalton Williams does lead the MAC in passing with 303 yards per game (14th in FBS), he's not very efficient (25 TD to 16 INT), but he can toss the rock around with the best of them. He threw four interceptions in the UMass loss last time out, but he'll be going against a Rocket secondary that allows a MAC-worst 299 yards a game, so at least on paper it appears the Zips offense should be able to match their output of 26.4 points per game (8th in MAC).
Toledo does have 16 interceptions and they have taken four back for touchdowns, so it will be important for Williams to protect the ball and not make mistakes if they want to hang with the Rockets. In fact, the biggest difference between these two is in turnover margin, where the Rockets are near the top of the league with a +8, while the Zips are a MAC-worst -15.
Surprisingly, the last time these two faced each other in 2008 the game ended with an Akron victory, 47-30. Of course that was four years and a whole graduated classes worth or players, so it's hard to take a whole lot from that result. But for what it's worth the Zips covered as 6.5-point favorites and the final score sailed way over the closing total of 55 in that game.
Historically though Toledo has enjoyed a lopsided advantage in the series, going 6-0 SU and ATS from 1994 through the 2006 seasons, covering numbers as high as 28.5 (in 1995), 21.5 (1997) and 15 (in '94 and '96).
Recent betting trends will show you that the Zips are actually a decent bet when they play on the road (4-1 ATS in L5). Combine that with the fact that Toledo has been terrible on Tuesday nights (0-5 ATS in L5 on Tues.), and you might have to take a hard look at going against the chalk in this game.
Badger's Pick to Cover the Point Spread: I have a really hard time taking a three-score favorite in any game, even though I do think the Rockets will be determined to finish the year off strong. But when picking the other side means taking Akron, a 1-10 team that may quite possibly be the worst team in the FBS, both ways are a shaky proposition. Akron does have one thing going in it's favor... The line opened at 18.5 and hasn't moved despite a whopping 70% of the action coming in on Toledo. If you're an action junkie, then I suggest a small play on Akron to cover the spread.Comment

Maui Invitational: What Bettors Need to Know
Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs (+12.5, 136)
After dropping their openers at the Maui Invitational in much different fashion, Mississippi State and Marquette will try to regroup when they meet Tuesday. The Bulldogs were blown out almost from the opening tip against No. 9 North Carolina, about 2 1/2 hours after Marquette lost to Butler on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer. Mississippi State only brought six scholarship players to the tournament and have eight available overall. Starting guard Jalen Steele broke his wrist last week against Florida Atlantic and reserve forward Colin Borchert is suspended for the trip.
TV: 2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2
ABOUT MARQUETTE (2-1): The Golden Eagles are probably still wondering how they lost to Butler in the tournament’s opening game. They held a two-point lead with eight seconds remaining and Junior Cadougan was at the line shooting his second free throw. Cadougan missed, however, and Butler guard Rotnei Clarke brought the ball up court, flinging in a 3-point basket at the buzzer. If there was a silver lining from the game it was the play of 6-4 junior guard Vander Blue, who scored 21 points on 7-for-14 shooting and played like the top prospect the Golden Eagles recruited three years ago.
ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (1-2): Wendell Lewis and Gavin Ware turned in the two most impressive performances against the Tar Heels, and the 6-9 post players should pose a similar challenge for Marquette. Lewis scored 10 points against North Carolina, reaching double digits for only the fourth time in his four-year career. Ware, a 270-pound freshman, scored eight points off the bench and gathered nine rebounds.
Texas Longhorns vs. USC Trojans (+2, 119)
USC and Texas will try to rebound from disappointing first-round losses when they meet in the consolation bracket of the Maui Invitational. The Longhorns suffered a shocking 86-73 first-round defeat to Chaminade, a Division II program, less than 24 hours earlier. Chaminade had won only six previous games in its 29 seasons as tournament hosts. USC didn’t show up in the first half against Illinois either, committing nine turnovers in the first 12 minutes and falling behind by 31 points at the half before eventually losing 94-64.
TV: 5 p.m. ET, ESPN2.
ABOUT USC (2-1): The Trojans will likely need more offense from senior point guard Jio Fontan if they hope to have an impact this season. The team’s second-leading scorer (10.5) and assist leader (3.2) two years ago, Fontan has cobbled together just 19 points through the first three games, is shooting 25 percent from the floor and has turned the ball over 10 times compared to 11 assists. After sitting out all of last season following knee surgery, Fontan has increased his shot totals and scoring each game. It would be beneficial to the Trojans if he could maintain that upward plane.
ABOUT TEXAS (2-1): If the Longhorns can’t get up for this game they could be in for another rude awakening. Texas can point to several areas in which it needs improvement. The Longhorns had just 10 assists compared to 18 turnovers and were out-rebounded by a team without a player taller than 6-8. They also shot 56.7 percent (17 for 30) from the free-throw line and 19 percent (4 for 21) from 3-point range. Sheldon McClellan, a 6-4 sophomore guard who entered the tournament averaging 22.5 points through the first two games, was held to 14 and most of those came when the game was out of hand.
Butler Bulldogs vs. North Carolina Tar Heels (-10, 138)
Butler won’t have long to savor its wild opening-round victory at the Maui Invitational. The Bulldogs will face No. 9 North Carolina on Tuesday in the semifinals. The Tar Heels ran right through Mississippi State in their opener 95-49. Butler has a better chance to stay with North Carolina if it can avoid double-digit turnovers. The Bulldogs gave the ball away only seven times against Marquette, allowing them to stay in the game and eventually win on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Rotnei Clarke. North Carolina took advantage of an undermanned Mississippi State team and forced 22 giveaways.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2
ABOUT BUTLER (2-1): Brad Stevens must be especially pleased with the offensive balance displayed by his starters. Four finished in double figures against Marquette, led by a career-high 24 points from 6-6 junior forward Khyle Marshall. Clarke also appears to be settling in nicely. He led Arkansas in scoring as a junior, then redshirted last season after transferring. Stevens, who guided the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament final in 2010 and 2011, likely wants to see more from his bench, however. They combined for only two points against Marquette.
ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (4-0): Not much went wrong for the Tar Heels in their tournament opener. They scored the game’s first nine points, hit a half-court shot to end the first half and continued to dominate even after their starters called it a day. Leslie McDonald was probably the biggest surprise. After finishing fifth in scoring on a talent-laden team two years ago, the 6-5 junior guard missed all of last season after undergoing knee surgery. He exploded for a career-high 21 points against Mississippi State, making 6 of 10 3-pointers.
Illinois Fighting Illini at Chaminade Silverswords (+14, 146)
Chaminade will need to shake off the euphoria of Monday’s shocking upset victory against Texas and buckle down for an equally tough foe in Illinois. The Fighting Illini beat USC by 30 points a few hours after Chaminade fans stormed the court following the Silverswords victory against the Longhorns, only their seventh win in 83 games as tournament hosts. Both teams looked real comfortable inside the Lahaina Civic Center. Illinois made 12 consecutive field goals during one stretch of the game. Chaminade, a Division II program, made 34 of 39 free throws and 10 of 30 3-point attempts.
TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2
ABOUT ILLINOIS (4-0): The Illini were already loaded in the backcourt with seniors Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson, now they have sophomore Tracy Abrams elevating his game enough to pass junior Joseph Bertrand on the depth chart and Richardson in the scoring column. Abrams is averaging 15.2 points, second on the team to Paul, after averaging 4.3 as a freshman. Bertrand, fourth on the team in scoring last season (6.5) gives Illinois considerable depth at guard. He played a season-high 22 minutes against the Trojans and scored a season-high nine points while also contributing five rebounds and three steals.
ABOUT CHAMINADE (3-1): Chaminade hasn’t been to the semifinals of this tournament since beating Villanova in 1993. "We're ecstatic," said second-year coach Eric Bovaird. "That's an incredible win for our program. We believed all along that we could play with these guys over here." Even after missing their first 10 shots and falling behind 8-0, the Silverswords didn’t run and hide, instead storming back to take a four-point halftime lead and quickly extending it to double digits after intermission. Chaminade has never won two games in the same year at the Maui Invitational, something that could provide added motivation.Comment
