Ohio State at Duke: What bettors need to know
Ohio State Buckeyes at Duke Blue Devils (-5, 144)
The premier matchup of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge takes place Wednesday when No. 4 Ohio State makes its first-ever visit to Cameron Indoor Stadium to play No. 2 Duke.
The Buckeyes have won all four of their games by double digits, most recently destroying UMKC 91-45 on Friday. The Blue Devils have played a much tougher schedule; their 6-0 start includes victories over then Top-3 teams Kentucky and Louisville. Duke will try to avenge last season’s 85-63 loss in Columbus, which dropped the Blue Devils to 11-2 in the Challenge. Ohio State is 5-5 in the event.
TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
ABOUT NO. 4 OHIO STATE (4-0, 2-1 ATS): The Buckeyes lead the nation in 3-point shooting at 48 percent (32 of 67) and rank ninth in overall field-goal percentage (52.1). They’re also in the Top 10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (6th/+1.63) and fewest turnovers per game (5th/9.5). Junior F Deshaun Thomas averages 24 points and 7.3 rebounds, while junior PG Aaron Craft – last season’s Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year -- chips in 14.3 points and 5.3 assists. Junior G Lenzelle Smith, the third returning starter, averages 11.5 points and 5.3 rebounds. All three have upper their scoring averages following the departures of Jared Sullinger and William Buford.
ABOUT DUKE NO. 2 (6-0, 4-2 ATS): Having just survived a stacked field to win the Battle 4 Atlantis, Duke has won 23 straight regular-season games. All five starters are averaging in double figures, led by 6-10 senior Mason Plumlee (19.7 points, 10 rebounds). Senior G Seth Curry is nursing a right shin injury, but that didn’t stop him from averaging a team-high 18 points in the Bahamas. He was scheduled to get a few days off leading into this game. Tourney MVP Quinn Cook averaged 13.7 points and 6.3 assists over the three games. The Blue Devils have hit 12 more 3-pointers than Ohio State, but shoot a significantly lower percentage (37.3).
TRENDS:
* Buckeyes are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 vs. Atlantic Coast.
* Blue Devils are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 home games.

Game of the day: Brooklyn Nets at Boston Celtics
Brooklyn Nets at Boston Celtics (-4.5, 191.5)
The Brooklyn Nets have taken to their new home, winning seven of eight at Barclays Center to jump to the top of the Atlantic Division. The road has not been nearly as kind. The Nets will be looking to move to .500 on the road when they visit the Boston Celtics on Wednesday. The Celtics have won back-to-back games but have yet to solve the defensive problems that have plagued them over the last two weeks.
New Jersey beat the crosstown-rival New York Knicks in overtime on Monday to forge a tie between the teams atop the division. Boston enters Wednesday in fourth place, behind the Philadelphia 76ers. The Celtics have controlled the Atlantic with a stingy team defense since bringing Kevin Garnett to town five seasons ago but have had trouble incorporating several new pieces into their scheme.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), CSN New England (Boston)
ABOUT THE NETS (9-4, 8-3-2 ATS): Brooklyn got things done Monday with the inside-outside combination of Deron Williams and Brook Lopez, each of whom recorded a double-double. Those two are part of the home-road problem for the Nets. Lopez is averaging 21.3 points and 6.6 rebounds in eight home games but has seen those numbers dip to 16.0 and 6.4 in five contests on the road. Williams is averaging 18.3 points and 10.1 assists at Barclays Center but 14.2 and seven away from it. Third-leading scorer Joe Johnson has had the same problems. Brooklyn is beginning a three-game trip at Boston.
ABOUT THE CELTICS (8-6, 5-7-2 ATS): Boston has never been a great rebounding team in this era of success, preferring to run back on defense instead of crashing the boards. While the Celtics still are last in the NBA in rebounding, they also have slipped into the bottom third in scoring defense recently. Boston needed overtime to squeeze out a 116-110 victory at the lowly Orlando Magic on Sunday and has allowed the opposition to reach the century mark in four straight games. Some of the problems on defense began on Nov. 15, when the Celtics dropped a 102-97 decision at Brooklyn.
TRENDS:
* Favorite is 3-0-1 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Home team is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
* Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
* Nets are 0-3-1 ATS in the last four meetings.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. Celtics PG Rajon Rondo missed the Nov. 15 meeting with an ankle injury. Rondo has recorded at least 10 assists in each of his last 37 games.
2. Boston had taken three straight in the series before dropping the first meeting this season.
3. The Nets have been at their best defensively in the fourth quarter of the last three games, holding teams to an average of 15 points.Comment

NBA Top 4: Bad Road Team, Good Road Bet
Road teams have the edge at the betting window to start the NBA season, posting a 101-96-6 ATS mark heading into Tuesday’s action.
That 51.27 percent success rate against the spread isn’t going to balloon up wallets overnight but there are a handful of teams showing excellent betting value when hitting the highway. And, to the surprise of some, those teams aren’t at the top of the NBA food chain.
Here are four teams with losing road records that have done just enough to meet the oddsmakers’ expectations away from home:
Cleveland Cavaliers (1-9 SU away, 6-4 ATS away)
The Cavaliers just went a big oh-fer on their recent three-game road swing, but managed to cover the spread in Orlando, Miami and Memphis. Cleveland was given a pile of points in South Beach (+15) and was an 11.5-point dog visiting the Grizzlies.
Despite missing star guard Kyrie Irving, the Cavs were a tough out in all three of those contests. Rookie Dion Waiters has been instant offense in place of Irving and center Anderson Varejao is playing the best basketball of his career. Cleveland is home to Phoenix Tuesday before heading to Atlanta Friday.
Washington Wizards (0-6 SU away, 4-2 ATS away)
A bad team can sink so low that eventually they come up on the other side as a value bet. This phenomenon usually doesn’t happen until late in the NBA season, but the Wizards are already there thanks to a 0-12 start to the schedule. And the best value with Washington has been on the road.
The Wizards are 4-2 ATS away from D.C. including back-to-back covers in their past two road games. Looking over the home/away splits won’t reveal much, as the scoring and defense remains around the same level no matter where Washington plays. Just those few extra points on the spread as the visitor are making the difference. The Wiz are home to Portland Wednesday before traveling to New York Friday.
New Orleans Hornets (2-5 SU away, 5-2 ATS away)
The Hornets went into the Staples Center and capped their four-game road trip with a shocker over the Clippers Monday, knocking off L.A. 105-98 as 13-point pups. New Orleans split against the spread during that trip, going 2-2 ATS with the other payday coming in Phoenix. The Bugs nearly knocked off Indiana as well but faded in overtime.
The Hornets offense is hitting its stride away from the Big Easy, averaging 100.3 points per road game (sixth in the NBA) while scoring an average of just 87.8 at home (30th in the NBA). Without shot swatter Anthony Davis guarding the hoop (out with an ankle injury) New Orleans is turning up the intensity and looking to outgun opponents (3-1 over/under on recent road trip). Bettors will have to wait until Dec. 8 (at Miami) to bet the Bugs on the road with a five-game home stand starting Wednesday.
Denver Nuggets (4-6 SU away, 6-4 ATS away)
The Nuggets are well known among NBA bettors for their home-court edge, welcoming foes to the thin air of the Pepsi Center. But while Denver is a solid play as a host, it has shown some value as a guest as well. The Nuggets have covered in three straight road games, including a 105-103 loss in Utah Monday that snapped a four-game winning streak in which the team was a perfect 5-0 ATS.
Denver is one of the best rebounding teams in the NBA, especially on the offensive glass. It leads the league in offensive boards (15.5 per game) and total rebounds (57.5 per game), getting great work from glass eater Kenneth Faried under the rim. The Nuggets play seven of their next eight games on the road, starting in Golden State Thursday and L.A. Friday.Comment
