NCAA Basketball Play of the Day January 08, 2013 3:01 AM by GT Staff

Ohio State -7 at Purdue at 6 p.m. PT ESPN

This game will be the second half of the ESPN Tuesday night double header and pits the Ohio State Buckeyes vs. the Purdue Boilermakers. OU comes off a humiliating loss this past Saturday when getting crushed at Illinois, after that game coach went off on them so look for the big road effort tonight.

    OHIO STATE -7

Indian Cowboy's Picks For NBA Basketball

3-Unit Play. #504. Take Philadelphia -1 over Brooklyn Nets (Tuesday @ 7:05pm est).

I think the Sixers will step up in a big way here at home against Brooklyn. I almost made this a 5* selection but I wanted to see how Brooklyn continues to respond to their coaching change. Keep in mind that Philadelphia comes off a tough Western Conference road trip that featured 8 contests against the likes of San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Lakers, Blazers, Warriors and Grizzlies. Just before that Western Conference road trip started they faced the Nets on the road and fell short 92-95 but covered the 6 point chalk. As they return home after the tough road trip which saw them lose their last 3 straight up and ATS I like them here to step up at home in front of the home crowd. This team has revenge and the motivation of playing at home once again compared to the Nets who continue to surge upwards with the latest coaching change. But, I do think the Nets finally come back down to earth a bit here. Eventually the emotions calm down after a coaching change as there is always a surge initially. The Nets have won 3 straight and 5 of their last 6 but the wins were against Washington, Cleveland, Sacramento, Charlotte and OKC (but that was after getting hammered by San Antonio so the motivation was there). The Nets are 5-13-2 ATS in their last 20 games coming off a straight up win of 10 or more points and the Sixers are 8-3 ATS coming off a straight up loss of more than 10 points. This is a Philadelphia team that has beat the likes of Denver, Atlanta, Dallas, Boston and Utah at home and I can see them stepping up here with a big home win.

          Missouri (-8½) over Alabama

          7:00 PM -- Mizzou Arena

MISSOURI (11-2) -8 ½ over Alabama (8-5) Prediction: Missouri by 13-14 Played at Mizzou Arena (15,060) in Columbia, Missouri Starting Time: 7:05 TV: ESPN Comments: Missouri is loaded with blue-chip talent, including standout guards Phil Pressley (13.8 points per game) and newcomer Jabari Brown (11.8 points, 5.0 rebounds) and two top forwards, 6-8 senior Laurence Bowers (16.8 points, 7.0 rebounds) and 6-9 Alex Oriakhi (10.2 points, 8.8 rebounds, a deep bench and a home court bias that is as strong as any in the country. The Tigers are 8-0 at home this season, have not lost a non-conference home game (73 straight) since the end of the 2005-06 season, are 29-4 at home in conference play since 2008-09 and went 8-1 in Columbia in league games last year. Alabama is to be respected and will certainly come to play in this SEC opener but the Crimson Tide seems up against it in a big-time way tonight.

          5 Units

          Depaul (+9) over Connecticut

          7:00 PM -- Gampel Pavilion

DePaul (10-5) +9 over CONNECTICUT (10-3) Prediction: Connecticut by 2-3 Played at Gampel Pavilion (10,167) in Storrs, Connecticut Starting Time: 7:05 TV: SportsNet New York, Mid-Atlantic Sports Network Baltimore/Washington D.C., Brighthouse Network Florida Comments: These teams are more evenly matched than most know and that makes the -9 one would have to lay with Connecticut a bit much, unless one thinks the home court at Gampel Pavilion is worth that. My figures say this Big East contest will go right to the money and it would not surprise me one bit if DePaul won it straight up

4-STAR Miami -2.5 over INDIANA - A beatdown of a patsy opponent like Washington was exactly what this Miami team needed to get out of its funk. After this game they embark on a tough West Coast hike so look for the Heat to take care of business here before heading to the Pacific.
Miami locked Washington down defensively in that last game, winning 99-71. Even as a big dog, Washington scored 17.2 points less than expected. The Heat are 7-0 ATS (10.4 ppg) since February 10, 2010 on the road after a home win in which their DPA was minus 15 points or less.

They also got the benefit of some much needed rest from that game. Dwyane Wade played just 29 minutes in the win. The Heat are 7-0 ATS (8.6 ppg) since February 17, 2012 with at least a day of rest after a win in which Dwyane Wade played fewer than 30 minutes.

Indiana is coming off a 95-80 win over Milwaukee Saturday. They won despite having 10 shots blocked in the game. The Pacers are 0-9 ATS (-10.1 ppg) since January 31, 2010 after a game at home in which they had at least 10 shots blocked.

It didn't hurt them because they corralled most of those shots and several others with 22 offensive rebounds in the game. The Pacers are 0-7 ATS (-9.6 ppg) since February 09, 2007 after a game at home in which they had at least 20 offensive rebounds.

However they go to player struggled in that game with just eight points in 35 minutes. The Pacers are 0-12 ATS (-4.8 ppg) since April 01, 2011 with at least a day of rest after a win at home in which Paul George scored fewer than 10 points.

SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: Miami 99, INDIANA 85

                              3-Unit Play. Take #527 Ohio State (-8) over Purdue (9 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8)

I gotta tell you: if this number had held at the 6.5 that I saw overnight last night this would've been my Big Ten Game of the Year. Ohio State is going to demolish Purdue tonight. It really is the perfect storm against the Boilermakers. First, Purdue stinks. As I said yesterday when we won with Indiana - the Big Ten is completely split between four or five really, really good teams and then four really terrible team. Wisconsin and Iowa are the middle. Ohio State is coming off a really embarrassing loss at Illinois over the weekend. But I think that just pissed them off and they are going to want to take it out on the Boilermakers. Purdue upset Illinois last week, but that game was a fluke. Illinois played like a bunch of idiots in the second half and Purdue played way above itself. The Boilers had a little of that spill over into the first half of the game against Michigan State, but then they came back down to earth and were run by 23 in Lansing. Michigan State is not as strong as Ohio State. This Buckeye team hasn't won a big game yet this year. But they did nearly beat Duke in Cameron Indoor, which takes more than a smile. And their losses against Duke, Kansas and Illinois are nothing to sneeze at. They Buckeyes have won three of four in this series over the past two years and that includes wins by 17 and 23 points. The Buckeyes are more efficient on offense and their stifling defense is going to completely smother the pathetic offense that the Boilermakers have. Aaron Craft is going to get all over Terone Johnson and should neutralize Purdue's top scorer. That's going to shift the burden to overmatched D.J. Byrd. Not going to happen. Purdue is No. 329 in the country in 3-point shooting and I don't think you can upset a team like Ohio State - which has superior athletes and won't get thrashed on the interior tonight - if you can't bang some threes. This is a good bounce back position for the Buckeyes and I think they get the job done in a big way here.

                              1-Unit Play. Take #512 Connecticut (-9) over DePaul (7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8)

We got burned by DePaul over the weekend when they pulled the upset over Providence. They dominated that game against a Friars team that is completely off the rails. But I don't think they will be able to do that in Storrs tonight. Providence won on Saturday and has hung out in the Northeast for several days before tonight's game. I think it will be tough for the team to stay focused. The Huskies have won their last seven meetings with the Blue Demons, and most of them have been clear blowouts. They have won by 14, 26, 26, 20, 7, and 22. I don't think it will be that ugly tonight. But I do think that Connecticut will handle the press well tonight because Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright are two exceptional guards that will make the right decisions. Connecticut lost its first conference game of the season and I think that they are hungry to get that first 'W'. If they can get absolutely anything defensively out of their interior players - they have to at least slow down Cleveland Melvin and make DePaul shoot jumpers - then I think that they can get the job done here.

                              1-Unit Play. Take #529 Niagara (-5.5) over Brown (7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8)

We got burned betting against Brown with Providence a week or so ago. That was a fluke. This team is terrible. Brown is one of the worst teams in one of the worst conferences in the country. They have home losses to teams like Bryant and St. Francis and they have been blasted by bottom-tier teams like New Hampshire and Central Connecticut. Niagara is a good team. They are young. And that's the only reason this play isn't rated much, much higher. But their top four scorers are all guards and they are all much more athletic than the opponents this evening. Antoine Mason and Juan'ya Green combine to average 35.3 points per game and these four juniors and sophomore guards seem to be getting things figured out. They have won four of five games, including double-digit wins against a bunch of teams - Hartford, Vermont, Marist - that are better than Brown. Yes, those games were at home. But these guys won at Loyola, Md. - which is one of the top teams in the Metro - and they have played tough in some other tricky venues.

                              2-Unit Play. TEASER: Take #512 Connecticut (-4) over DePaul (7 p.m.) AND Take #527 Ohio State (-3) over Purdue (9 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8)

                              1-Unit Play. TEASER: Take #518 Missouri (-3.5) over Alabama (7 p.m.) AND Take #523 Illinois State (-4.5) over Missouri State (8 p.m.)

                              1-Unit Play. TEASER: Take #514 Drexel (-1) over Northeastern (7 p.m.) AND Take #525 Pittsburgh (+7) over Georgetown (9 p.m.)

For the record, the Ohio State game would've been 3.5-Unit Play under my old grading and the Missouri-ISU teaser would be a 1.5-Unit Play under my old grading. Just throwing it out there.
