★★★HOUSTON 121 - LA Lakers 102—Nothing seems to be going right for
Los Angeles squad that is apparently drifting through a lost season. The Lakers
are way out of synch, and have only rarely beaten beaten good teams, as their
1-8 mark as an underdog shows, and only Phoenix has allowed more points on
the road than the half-hearted Laker defense. Now C Dwight Howard is out with
a torn labrum in his shoulder, and there are rumors of discord between Howard
and Kobe Bryant surfacing. L.A. F Pau Gasol is likely out of this one as well with
a concussion. Houston has won and covered last 3 against L.A. at the Toyota
Center, and the home team (and favorite) won and covered first two meetings
this season between the Rockets and Lakers. Houston Gs James Harden and
Jeremy Lin have had a rough time against L.A. this season, shooting a
combined 26% vs. the Lakers, but the Rockets overcame Kobe Bryant’s 39 pts.
Dec. 4 in this building. The potent Houston bench outscored the Laker reserves
59-20 in that game. L.A. PG Steve Nash missed first two against the Rockets,
but the Lakers are just 3-6 SU and vs. the points with Nash running the show.
"Totals" note: Houston “over” 8-2 last 10, and the Lakers “over” in last 4 road
games.
