4 Unit Play. #725 Take NC State -2 over Maryland (7 pm ESPN 2) We will bite on this since most of the public believes that NC State is due for a letdown after coming off a big win against Duke over the weekend. I do not believe that will be the case, as NC State is a veteran team that returns four starters off of their Sweet 16 performance last year. NC State can score points as will shooting over 50% as a team, but this may be their toughest task of the season, as Maryland can really defend. That being said, at some point NC State will go on a scoring run and I just do not believe that Maryland will be able to match it. NC State is 16-5 ATS in their last 21 road games.

5 Unit Play. #767 Take Southern Miss -3.5 over SMU (8 pm) Boy many of the teams in Conference USA have inflated records because they did not challenge themselves during the non-conference portion of the season. Houston, SMU, Tulane, and UCF all have crap RPI rankings despite having impressive winning records. Southern Miss does not fall into that category, as they are 11-4 and have a strong RPI ranking of 58 as of Tuesday. There four losses have come against quality teams (NMSU, U of A, Wichita State, La Tech) and they were not blown out in any of those four games. The Golden Eagles have not lost a game since 12/22 and all five wins since this date have been major blowouts. Granted they have not been against impressive teams, but they did beat Houston their last time out by 19 points. The 19 points final score result does not do justice to how big of a blowout this actually was. It was not like Southern Miss played outstanding on offense either; they shot 33% from the 3-point line and less than 50% from the field and free throw line. The Eagles are getting the job done on the defensive side of the floor by leading Conference USA in steals per game and allowing opponents to make just 28.7% of their shots from long range.

Moving over to SMU, they did make a splash during the offseason by digging up Larry Brown to coach their team. The Mustangs got off to a 5-0 start but things have gotten much tougher after that. SMU has now lost two straight home games and six of their last nine games overall. They did rebound to beat Tulane in their last game, but I expect to hear Coach Larry Brown gripe about things shortly. SMU needs to keep this game in the low sixties for them to have a chance and I just do not see that happening. SMU played one of their better games of the season last year against Southern Miss making 11 three pointers and still never led in that game.

If this game were played in Hattiesburg, the Eagles would be a 15-point favorite. Playing in Dallas will help, but the Mustangs just do not have enough talent to hang with the Golden Eagles for 40 minutes. USM will go on a big run at some point in this game and that will be all she wrote. USM already has 5 true road victories on the season. SMU is 5-11 ATS in their last 16 conference games. USM is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games.

4 Unit Play. #798 Take Washington State -7 over Utah (9:30 pm PAC-12 Network)

8 Unit Play. #793 Take Purdue -1.5 over Nebraska (9 pm Big 10 Network) College Basketball Game of the Year. Both of these teams are defensive driven, but what this play really comes down to is that Purdue just have better talent than does Nebraska. The Cornhuskers lost four starters off of a team that finished in last place and their lone returning starter is Brandon Ubel, who is out for this game with a broken right elbow. Second chance points will be plentiful in this game since neither side shoots it very well from the field and it is hard not to favor Purdue in this department. Matt Painter team's always battle you each and every position.

Purdue seems to have been given a new life once Big Ten play began, as they are 2-2 on the season including a solid win against Illinois. Nebraska has played a brutal schedule to open up Big Ten play playing the 4 top teams in the conference. They did compete in three of those games and should have beaten Wisconsin had they been able to make a shot down the stretch. But they just cannot score points and they even struggled to put away numerous conference lightweights during the non-conference portion of the season. This will be their second game without Ubel and generally as the season goes on, things get much tougher without your big guy in the paint. Nebraska is averaging just 47 points during Big Ten Play and they will need at least sixty to have a chance to stay with a healthy Purdue squad. Purdue is just as strong on defense as is Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Michigan; they just are much streakier on offense. But expect them to find things much easier tonight especially without Ubel in the lane. Nebraska is 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games in the Big Ten. Purdue is 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games played on Wednesday.

In closing this will be a hard game to watch, since both teams struggle to score points, but this game reminds me a lot of the Purdue - Clemson game earlier this season. Purdue got off to a hot start in that game and never looked back. That is how I expect this game to play out. Purdue enters this game with much more confidence and will jump on Nebraska early with a quick run. Nebraska comes into this game with very little confidence and very little talent that was predicted to finish last in the conference. That shows up in a big way, as Purdue gets the job done on the road giving us a GOY cash.

The Rockets are coming to Dallas losing 4-straight and their defense has been their Achilles' heel giving up an average of 109ppg in their last 3 games. The Mavericks got great bench play in their game as Elton Brand and Vince Carter played well against Minnesota and tonight the bench will need to play well again if they want to win this home game. Dallas is getting healthier and Dirk Nowitzki is getting used to playing with O.J. Mayo so the more games these two get under their belts the better the Mavs will be and tonight the Mavs notch another home win. I'm still not really buying the 49ers yet. And with Chris Gaston in the line-up now for Fordham, this Rams team is much, much better. Fordham have been a cash cow of late with an impressive 10-2 ATS mark for backers. And right now Charlotte is not scoring at a high enough clip to make me think they can run away with this one. Go with the live dog here in Fordham, as this will be their fourth cash in the past five v. Charlotte.

LSU should not be laying double digit points to anyone right now. And it's not like South Carolina is all that bad either. Not only has the road team in this series covered seven of the last eight, but the underdog is 7-2 ATS in the last nine as well. Seems again like another underdog that can step up in this match-up. Four of the last six between these two have gone to the road team. I don't know if the Gamecocks can win this one outright, but a cover could and should be the result.

This is a young Boilermakers team, and really an 8-8 record isn't as bad or mediocre as it may seem in the standings. And when you considering Purdue had to start is Big Ten schedule with ranked Illinois, Ohio State and Michigan (the latter two on the road, and the first a win over U of I), their record looks even better. Add to that a winner last time out against Penn State to even their conference mark at 2-2, and they have momentum going into a road game against an Nebraska team struggling at 0-4 in the league. And for as poorly as Purdue played in some stretches for the first month or two of the season, the fact that oddsmakers have installed them as a road favorite here says everything. Purdue keeps plugging away with another win here.

The Brooklyn Nets travel to Atlanta and the Nets bring back Joe Johnson with them. Joe Johnson was a key contributor to the Atlanta Hawks success the last few years but over the summer Joe Johnson took his talent to Brooklyn. The Hawks will want to give an unwelcome road loss but tonight I believe the Hawks again will struggle on offense. Atlanta is coming home after a horrible showing against the Bulls which they only scored 58 points (9-points in the 2nd quarter). Another problem the Hawks will have tonight is that Josh Smith will be out due to a suspension and with him out of the lineup I have no clue who will step up for the Hawks tonight at home. The Nets have won 7-straight and the Nets are playing some great basketball since they fired Avery Johnson as head coach. Last night the Nets won at home against the Raptors have the Nets got big games for Deron Williams, Brook Lopez, and Joe Johnson and again I see all 3 of the, having big games but Johnson will look to light up his old team tonight. Nets win this game and the Nets will have 8-straight victories.
