Warriors at Spurs: What Bettors Need to Know
Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs (-12, 203)
After jumping out to a hot start as one of the surprise teams in the league, the Golden State Warriors have hit their first rough patch. Friday's visit to the San Antonio Spurs, who have won 13 straight at home, is going to make it difficult to pull out of the slump. The Warriors have dropped four of their last five and hope to have Stephen Curry back from an ankle injury by Friday.
The Spurs own the best home record in the NBA at 17-2 and have won their last two at AT&T Center by an average of 19.5 points. Manu Ginobili will miss his second straight game on Friday due to a hamstring strain but the Spurs did not appear to miss their sixth man in a 103-82 won over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday. Golden State has lost back-to-back games but has yet to drop three in a row this season. To avoid that third straight setback, the Warriors will need to win in San Antonio for the first time since 1997.
TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, CSBA (Golden State), FSSW (San Antonio)
ABOUT THE WARRIORS (23-14, 20-16-1 ATS): Golden State has dropped 15 straight overall to the Spurs and 27 in a row at San Antonio. Curry, who stepped on a teammate’s foot and rolled his ankle in practice on Wednesday morning, is listed as day-to-day. Without their top scorer available against the Miami Heat on Wednesday, the Warriors went down early and were blown out 92-75 at home. Jarrett Jack moved into Curry’s starting spot, weakening what has been a very strong bench. The lack of offense has been a big problem during the recent slump as Golden State has failed to reach 90 points in three of its last four setbacks. The Warriors’ struggles are coming during a long stretch against top competition, with the Denver Nuggets, Memphis and Los Angeles Clippers marking the other three recent defeats. Golden State still has to face the Clippers, Oklahoma City and the Chicago Bulls as part of five games in eight days.
ABOUT THE SPURS (30-11, 24-16-1 SU): Four of the last five teams to come to the AT&T Center have failed to reach 90 points as San Antonio continues to improve its defense. The Spurs held the Grizzlies to 26.6 percent in the second half of Wednesday’s triumph and limited the Minnesota Timberwolves to 37.1 percent in Sunday’s 106-88 win. Ginobili is expected to miss up to two weeks with the hamstring strain but San Antonio has the pieces to cover a short absence. Stephen Jackson and Gary Neal each got over 20 minutes off the bench on Wednesday and Boris Diaw received some extra time as part of a bigger lineup. The Spurs are closing out a three-game homestand with the Warriors and will play three of their next four on the road beginning Saturday at Atlanta.

WINNING POINTS
NBA
Friday, January 18
*Orlando over Charlotte by 5
Orlando heavily relies on its perimeter shooting, especially with Glen Davis out and
Hedo Turkoglu back in the lineup. Charlotte ranked dead last in defense and was second from the bottom in three-point defense. But backing the Magic as a favorite has
been a money-drainer as Orlando is only 2-6 ATS laying points this season.
ORLANDO 107-102.
***BEST BET
*Philadelphia over Toronto by 16
Huge revenge spot for Philadelphia, which was embarrassed nine days by the Raptors,
90-72. The 76ers were dead tired in that matchup playing for the sixth time in nine
days and second in two nights. Now the 76ers are rested having been home all week
and idle since Tuesday, while Toronto is playing for the third in four days.
PHILADELPHIA 103-87.
*Boston over Chicago by 2
Carlos Boozer is playing his finest ball since joining the Bulls three seasons ago and
Chicago was 14-3 ATS when playing on Friday.
BOSTON 94-92.
*Indiana over Houston by 7
Indiana’s defense should trump Houston’s offense with the Pacers at home and ranking in the top two in scoring defense and defensive field goal percentage. The Pacers
were 7-3 ATS during their past 10 home matchups.
INDIANA 97-90.
*Brooklyn over Atlanta by 3
The two teams just met Wednesday in Atlanta. Brook Lopez is playing at a high level,
but Deron Williams’ health remains a concern. Brooklyn was 4-8 ATS in its last 12
home games through this past Sunday.
BROOKLYN 103-100.
***BEST BET
*Memphis over Sacramento by 22
Sacramento ranks among the bottom five rebounding teams. The Kings’ lack of board
strength is going to get exposed against the Grizzlies’ ace front line of Marc Gasol,
Zach Randolph and Rudy Gay. The Grizzlies buried the Kings, 113-81, on the road
just 11 days ago.
MEMPHIS 112-90.
*San Antonio over Golden State by 7
The surprising Warriors would like to prove they’re for real with a strong road showing in this tough venue. Golden State was 10-7-1 ATS during its first 18 road contests.
The Spurs, though, had covered 62 percent of their first 17 home games.
SAN ANTONIO 105-98.
*Denver over Washington by 9
Denver was 4-3 when laying double digits, but Washington is in a good situational
spot as this matchup is a Thunder sandwich for the Nuggets. The Nuggets take on
Oklahoma City on the road and then meet the Thunder again at home in between
this matchup.
DENVER 105-96.
Oklahoma City over *Dallas by 10
Dirk Nowitzki has finally shown signs of coming around, but the Mavericks have horribly regressed dropping 13 of their last 17 through this past Sunday.
OKLAHOMA CITY 107-97.Comment
