-- Louisville lost its last two games after 16-1 start; they force turnovers 28.4% of time, but scored 68 or less points in three of last four games, their three lowest-scoring games of season. Georgetown won last three games vs Louisville by 10-3-3 points; Cardinals lost last two visits here, both by three points. Big East home teams are 2-16 vs spread in games where spread is 6 or less points; home dogs of 6 or less are 1-3.
-- Iowa State is 1-4 vs top 50 teams, beating BYU on Dec 1; Cyclones-Kansas State split last six meetings, after K-State had won its previous seven series games. Wildcats' 72-70 loss here LY snapped their 5-game win streak in Ames. 15-3 K-State scored 57 or less points in all three of its losses; they're 3-1 on road, losing by 16 to Gonzaga in Spokane. Big X home favorites are 6-7 against the spread.
-- Minnesota lost its last three games after 15-1 start; they turn ball over 22.1% of time, not good. Gophers lost last three games vs Wisconsin by 8-7-7 points; they're 1-6 in last seven visits to Madison, losing last two by 8-7. Badgers lost last two games, scoring 66-47 points, losing by a hoop at home last game, shooting 29.7% from floor, 7-18 from foul line. Big Dozen single digit home favorites are 4-5 vs spread.
-- New Mexico beat San Diego State 68-59 in MWC title game LY, after road team won both regular season games; Lobos lost three of last four visits to Viejas, with losses by 6-10-11 points. Aztecs lost last game at home to UNLV after winning in OT game before that. New Mexico is 4-0 in MWC, with three of four wins by exactly 5 points- they won in OT at Boise, in only road game. MWC single digit home favorites are 5-3.

-- UCLA won four in row, 13 of last 16 games vs Arizona State; they're 6-2 in last eight visits to Tempe, winning by 1-9 points last two years. Bruins won 11 of last 12 games overall, winning Pac-12 road games by 4-3-11 points. ASU won in OT Thursday; they're 4-2 in league, with a couple of wins in OT. Pac-12 home underdogs are 6-2 vs spread; dogs are 15-4 in league games where spread is 5 or less points.
-- Temple beat Syracuse on neutral court, lost by 7 at Kansas, but also lost at home to Bonnies and struggled with Penn during week, so they're liable to struggle vs well-prepared Butler, which is 3-1 in A-16- their last two games were both decided by a point- four of its last five games were decided by 6 or less. A-16 home favorites of 8 or less points are 10-5 vs spread. Bulldogs are expected to get starting guard Clarke back here.
-- Oregon is 6-0 in Pac-12, with three wins by 4 or less points; they've won league home games by 4-3-7 points. Home side won 14 of last 19 Washington-Oregon games; Huskies lost last two visits to Eugene by 5-25 points. U-Dub lost last two games, scoring 65-66 points, but they do have three league wins (Utah/both No-Cal schools). Pac-12 single digit home favorites are 9-18 vs spread. Huskies are 6-3 vs top 100 teams.
-- NC State is better than North Carolina this year, but Tar Heels won last 13 games vs Wolfpack, winning last five visits to Raleigh by 14-17-14-12-12 points. Wolfpack lost two of last three games (all three were decided by 4 or less points); they're 3-0 at home in ACC, winning by 8-13-4 points. Tar Heels won last three games after 10-5 start. ACC home favorites of less than 6 points are 2-6 vs spread. Pressure on State here.
-- VCU led by 7 with 0:40 left Thursday, lost in OT to crosstown rival Richmond; Rams looked tired at end, now face LaSalle squad that upset Butler last game. Explorers lost last three road games, by 17-9-7 points. VCU forces turnovers on 29.6% of time, #1 in country, but LaSalle has quality guards, will be hard to turn over a lot. A-16 double digit home favorites are 2-4 vs spread. I question VCU's energy level for this one.

-- Utah State is down two starters to injury, so normal home court edge in Logan doesn't exist; they lost last three games, by 13-11-7 points, and lost to UTA at home last game. Louisiana Tech is 8-0 in WAC; four of last six wins on road- they upset Utah State 62-60 in WAC tourney LY, ending a 6-game series losing skid; Bulldogs lost last seven visits here, with five of seven losses by 14+ points. WAC home dogs are 3-7 against the spread.
-- North Dakota State won 11 of last 13 games vs South Dakota State; in first meeting this year, Bison won 65-62 at home, making 70% of shots inside arc, as they grabbed early 19-6 lead, then outscored SDS 13-6 over last 4:56. Jackrabbits won last four games, are 3-0 at home in Summit, winning by 15-7-26 points. Summit League home favorites of 8 or less points are 1-6 vs spread.
-- Belmont is 7-0 in OVC, with three road wins, by 11-1-31 points; they beat Eastern Kentucky 83-76 nine days ago, grabbing early 29-12 lead, but they trailed by 4 with 6:39 left. Having seen EKU's offense once is a big help, but that is EKU's only OVC loss- they force turnovers 26.9% of time, are 4-0 at home in OVC. Colonels made 78% of 2-point shots in first meeting. OVC home dogs of 8 or less points are 2-7 vs spread.
-- Montana won six of last eight games vs Weber State, beating Wildcats in last three Big Sky tourneys; Weber lost last four visits to Missoula, by 14-19-15-19 points. Montana star Cherry is shooting under 30% on arc, under 40% inside it, as he returns from broken foot, but team is at 39.1% outside arc, #17 in country. Weber had its 8-game winning streak ended Thursday at Montana State. Big Sky home favorites of 7 or less points are 13-4 vs spread.

Teddy Covers in conjunction with ESPN Insider

Every Friday during the college basketball season, Ted Sevransky (better known as Teddy Covers) will provide ESPN Insiders with his picks on Saturday's biggest games, along with a few under-the-radar matchups. He'll give a projected point spread and pick for each.

Maryland Terrapins at Duke Blue Devils

Projected point spread: Duke -12 to -14
The knee-jerk reaction among some bettors is to look to support Duke off a loss. However, a hard look at the data shows that the Blue Devils have been long-term money losers against the spread following an ACC defeat over the past 15 years. Four late free throws got Duke backers the money following their last loss in a 16-point win over Georgia Tech as 15-point favorite.

But the Blue Devils' 27-point blowout loss earlier this week was different from their competitive defeat at the hands of N.C. State -- it was a confidence shaker. Seth Curry, Quinn Cook and Tyler Thornton combined to shoot 1-of-29 from the floor against Miami's stout defense, and Maryland ranks No. 2 in the country in defensive field goal percentage.

The Terps' Alex Len can bang with Mason Plumlee in the paint, and the Terps' slow pace could give the Blue Devils fits. I certainly don't see Duke losing this game, but Mark Turgeon's squad hasn't lost by more than 10 points against anybody all season. That makes them a clear choice as double-digit dogs.

                                The ATS pick: Take Maryland

                                Washington Huskies at Oregon Ducks

Projected point spread: Oregon -11 to -13
Oregon is a smart basketball team. Washington? Not so much. The Ducks aren't the lone remaining unbeaten in the Pac-12 by accident, despite the fact that half the teams in the conference have as much or more talent than they do. But Dana Altman's squad defines the term "good execution."

Oregon takes high-percentage shots on offense -- its five leading scorers all average between 10 and 12 points per game -- so there's no way to shut one or two guys down and stifle their production. The Ducks hit the glass hard, ranked in the top 10 in the country in rebounding margin. Defensively, Oregon doesn't blow many assignments, holding foes below 40 percent shooting for the season.

Washington is coming off back-to-back confidence-sapping losses to Pac-12 bottom-feeders Oregon State and Utah. Leading scorer C.J. Wilcox and point guard Abdul Gaddy might be the two best players on the floor, but the Huskies jack up bad shots, struggle with turnovers and don't rotate well defensively. Against a team like Oregon, that's a recipe for disaster.

                                The ATS pick: Take Oregon

                                Louisville Cardinals at Georgetown Hoyas

Projected point spread: Louisville -2 to -4
Even after back-to-back losses to the Syracuse Orange and Villanova Wildcats, I still view Rick Pitino's Cardinals as the team to beat when March rolls around. But Louisville has two fundamental flaws that could doom its chances. First, the Cardinals don't counterpunch very well when their opponent makes a big run. They can get flustered, particularly on the offensive end of the court. And secondly, these guys seem to tighten up, as a group, late in close games.

Those two flaws are exactly what doomed them in their Final Four loss to the Kentucky Wildcats last March, and they are exactly what doomed them when Georgetown snapped their 20-game home winning streak with a 71-68 upset victory the last time these two teams met.

The Hoyas' primary offensive threats, forward Otto Porter and guard Markel Starks, are both high-percentage shooters. But Georgetown's three losses in their last six games have all followed a similar script. The Hoyas' defense doesn't force turnovers, and when they face a strong defensive squad themselves, John Thompson III's Princeton offense seems to grind to a halt. Look for the Cardinals to bounce back strong here.

                                The ATS pick: Take Louisville

                                Oklahoma Sooners at Kansas Jayhawks

Projected point spread: Kansas -11 to -13
Kansas was jacked up to play K-State earlier this week, feeding off the energy of the hostile crowd in Manhattan in a hard-fought four-point win over the Wildcats. Much like Syracuse's subpar showing at home on MLK Day against Cincinnati, it's difficult for any team -- even an elite team -- to match that same level of energy and intensity in back-to-back ballgames.

Kansas annihilated Oklahoma twice last season, including a 22-point win here in Lawrence. But that was a much less confident Sooners team in the midst of a season-ending free-fall.

This season's Oklahoma team is in a very different mental state than last season's sub-.500 squad. Lon ******'s top six scorers and top four rebounders from last season all returned, joined by impact freshmen Je'lon Hornbeak, Isaiah Cousins and Buddy Hield. The Sooners are playing for a piece of first place in the Big 12, and while I'm not calling for the outright upset, I do think they'll battle to the end.

                                The ATS pick: Take Oklahoma

North Carolina Tar Heels at North Carolina State Wolfpack

Projected point spread: N.C. State -4.5 to -6.5
North Carolina has gotten back on track with three straight wins and covers since the Heels' ugly losses to the Virginia Tech Hokies and Miami (FL) Hurricanes to open up ACC play. But none of the teams they've beaten are better than .500 in conference -- it's not like the Tar Heels have bounced back with a series of signature victories.

This game features an intriguing point guard matchup between North Carolina freshman Marcus Paige and N.C. State junior star Lorenzo Brown. Paige isn't much of a shooter, just 9-of-36 from the floor in conference play, and, like many freshmen, he's been struggling with turnovers. Brown, on the other hand, has dished out at least 10 assists in three of the Wolfpack's last five games, and is averaging 12.8 points per game on the season.

The Wolfpack have yet to lose a game in Raleigh this season, despite the fact that Mark Gottfried's rotation only goes seven players deep right now. Roy Williams is going to try to use the Tar Heels' depth to wear down N.C. State, and we shouldn't forget that Williams beat Gottfried in all three meetings last season. This is a tough one to call, but the better teams are beating UNC by margin away from home these days.

The ATS pick: Take N.C. State

Kansas State Wildcats at Iowa State Cyclones

Projected point spread: Iowa State -6 to -8
Both of these squads are coming off frustrating tight losses earlier in the week. But I expect their reactions to those losses to be completely different, leaving them with very different energy levels here. The Wildcats gave everything they had at home against No. 2 Kansas, but came up four points short. Quite naturally, the team was completely deflated after the game.
Iowa State completely overlooked Texas Tech and lost the game by five.

The Cyclones haven't lost a home game all season, and they average 79 points per game. The loss against the Red Raiders was a real wake-up call, and they've got the right opponent at the right time on the right floor to bounce back here. This is one I feel strongly about.

The ATS pick: Take Iowa State

                                Temple Owls at Butler Bulldogs

Projected point spread: Butler -8 to -10
Butler is coming off a pair of frantic finishes: first, a last-second, one-point win over Gonzaga, then a last-second, one-point loss at LaSalle. Both games ended with raucous on-court celebrations. The Bulldogs could get leading scorer Rotnei Clark back following a three-game absence (he is listed as "questionable" for the game as of this writing). Clark's presence on the floor (or lack thereof) will definitely move this point spread.

Temple is no pushover, even in a hostile road environment like Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Owls handed Syracuse the Orange's only loss of the season, and led at Kansas for a good portion of the second half before falling short in a spread-covering defeat. Khalif Wyatt will be the most dangerous scoring threat on the floor for either team in this game, and the Anthony Lee/Scootie Randall/Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson trio can bang the boards effectively against Butler's low-post duo of Andrew Smith and Roosevelt Jones. I'm not calling for the outright upset here, but I wouldn't be shocked if we got one.

                                The ATS pick: Take Temple

New Mexico Lobos at San Diego State Aztecs

Projected point spread: San Diego State -3 to -5
New Mexico has a problem with scoring droughts against good defensive teams. We saw that on display in the Lobos' last loss, at St. Louis, and we saw it again earlier this week when the Lobos nearly blew a 22-point lead at home to Colorado State. Leading scorers Kendall Williams and Tony Snell both shoot right around 40 percent, as does combo guard Hugh Greenwood. When the Lobos can't feed their bigs in the low post, they're vulnerable.

Steve Fisher's Aztecs lost to UNLV in their last game on this floor, and followed that up with a miserable game at Wyoming. The Aztecs aren't as big or dominant in the paint as they've been in recent seasons, but their sharpshooting guard duo of Jamaal Franklin (the reigning MWC player of the year) and Chase Tapley are as good or better than any guard duo in the conference. This should be a great game to watch, but it's a tough one to bet on. I'd rather have the home favorite in a game the mainstream media will be calling an upset, despite the fact that San Diego State will be the favorite here in Vegas.

The ATS pick: Take San Diego State
