                  Larry Ness' 10* Situational G.O.Y.-CBB (23-13 run w/CBB 10*s)

My 10* Situational Game of the Year is on Va Comm at 8:00 ET.
Shaka Smart is not short on accomplishments, in just his fourth season at VCU. He won 27 games and the CBI in his first season (2009-10), 28 games and made the Final 4 in his second and then won 29 games last year, with another NCAA bid. However, what he hadn’t done (until this year), was get his team into the top-25. In fact, that hadn’t happened at VCU since the 1984-54 season, before the Rams appeared in the poll two weeks ago. VCU opened this week up to No. 19 and entered Wednesday’s game at Richmond with a 13-game winning streak, having outscored its opponents by an average of 21.8 points. However, the Rams lost 86-74 in OT to the Spiders, despite owning a seven-point lead with 42 seconds remaining in regulation. It was a tough one to swallow, as Richmond made a three-pointer with 1.5 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Shaka Smart said he considered having his team foul to prevent the Spiders from hitting a tying shot but didn't and the rest is history. The Rams play four guards in Graham (16.2-5.1), Daniels (12.3-3.2), Brandenburg (11.1-3.1) and Theus (6.8-4.7 APG), plus the 6-9 Reddic (13.9-7.9). VCU leads the nation with 20.8 forced turnovers and 12.5 steals per game, holding opponents to a modest 62.6 PPG while scoring 79.0 PPG (10th). The Rams return home Saturday night to face LaSalle, which just ended Butler’s 13-game winning streak with a 54-53 win on Wednesday. The Explorers also feature a strong backcourt, with Galloway (16.4-4.7-3.2), Duren (14.4-3.1-3.4), Garland (13.6) and Mills (7.3). Up front, it’s the 6-8 Wright (10.6-6.2) and the 6-11 Zack (7.2-6.2). LaSalle’s win over No. 9 Butler was its first over a top 10 opponent since defeating No. 8 Notre Dame 62-60 on Jan 30, 1980. "It was a dramatic win for our players, our fans, our students. It was awesome," coach John Giannini said. "But am I going to tell you I'm shocked that we won? Absolutely not." La salle will have its hands full matching that intensity vs the rams, and I really believe this is a ‘flat spot’ for the explorers, while the rams “can’t wait” to get back on the court and erase the bad taste of their loss to Richmond, out of their mouths. While LaSalle improved to 9-1 at home by beating Butler, it hasn't been able to match that success in road games with losses in FOUR of its last five. That includes three straight defeats, 76-59 at Miami-Fla, 74-65 at Charlotte and 70-63 at Xavier. The Explorers averaged 62.3 points on 36.1 percent shooting during that three-game road slide and face a highly-motived VCU team, looking to win its 10th straight at home Saturday night, where the Rams are 10-1 (lone loss was 53-51 to now-No. 20 Wichita St which is 18-2, in the 2nd game of the season). The Rams are outscoring opponents on average, 78.3-to-59.5 PPG on their home court and this is clearly the WRONG place at the WRONG time for LaSalle (note: La Salle hasn't beaten ranked opponents in consecutive games since the 1952 NIT!). "I felt like we had it," guard Darius Theus said after the loss to Richmond. "We just let a few plays slip up. We just had a few defensive mishaps and they made a lot of plays. We just have to finish the game. Coach has been telling us all week, don't get comfortable with success," Theus said. "We got slapped in the face (by Richmond)." Tonight, it’s LaSalle’s turn to get ‘slapped!’
                  Good luck...Larry
                  Larry Ness' 10* Rivalry G.O.M.-CBB (23-13 run w/CBB 10*s)

My 10* Rivalry Game of the Month is on NC State at 7:00 ET.
North Carolina lost its entire frontcourt, Barnes (17.1-5.2), Zeller (16.3-9.6) and Henson (13.7-9.9) plus PG Marshall (8.1-9.8 APG) from last year (all 1st-round NBA picks). However, while the cupboard is never bare in Chapel Hill, this year’s Tar Heels can be had. The 6-9 McAdoo (14.7-8.3) is the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, with his most help coming from 6-7 swingman Bullock (14.3-5.8-2.9) and guard Hairston (11.9-4.2). Guards Strickland (7.9-4.0) and McDonald (8.4) returned from LY plus two freshman, the 6-9 Johnson (7.7-4.2) and guard Paige ((6.7-4.4 APG) are the top newcomers. That’s a core of seven players averaging between 6.7 and 14.7 PPG but McDonald will again sit out with a suspension). North Carolina is 13-5 but only its 79-73 win at home over UNLV (Dec 29) holds any significance. The Tar Heels have fallen to Butler (in Hawaii), at Indiana (looked hopelessly outclassed in an 83-59 loss) and embarrassed themselves in an 85-67 loss at Texas., while losing in ACC play at Virginia (scored just 52 points) and home to Miami-Fla. NC St is loaded and at 15-4 (4-2 in ACC play), may even be considered somewhat of a disappointment (Wolfpack come in ranked 18th). The 6-9 Leslie (15.3-6.8) the 6-8 Howell (12.6-10.9) and 6-8 freshman Warren (12.2) make up quite a frontcourt trio. The rest of NC State’s six-man rotation includes veteran guard Brown (12.8-4.5-6.9), freshman guard Purvis (9.9) and the 6-6 Wood (11.7). The Wolfpack were shooting 51.0% from the floor, 3rd-best in the nation, as well as averaging 79.2 PPG (9th-best). It looked as if North Carolina State was a serious contender for its first ACC regular-season title in 24 seasons but hose hopes have faded recently, losing by one at Maryland and then by two at Wake (with a unimpressive home win over Clemson in between). However, a win Saturday night over the hated Tar Heels would undoubtedly give the team a much-needed boost. NC State lost three times to North Carolina in 2011-12, falling 69-67 in the ACC tournament semifinals That extended the Wolfpack’s losing streak vs the Tar Heels to a series-worst 13 straight and 19 of the past 20! The Wolfpack haven't beaten the Tar Heels since Feb 3, 2007. However, ENOUGH is ENOUGH. NC State is 11-0 at home, outscoring opponents 84.5-to-69.1 PPG while the Tar Heels are averaging just 66.6 PPG away from Chapel Hill. If head coach Mark Gottfried can’t best this year’s VERY-BEATABLE North Carolina team here in Raleigh (and by a margin!), he, like Lucy, will have some ‘splaining to do!
