Study Group: Thursday's Top 25 NCAAB Betting Notes

Ohio State Buckeyes at Northwestern Wildcats (+10, 122)

Ohio State has slipped to the fringe of the Big Ten race as it visits struggling Northwestern on Thursday. The No. 15 Buckeyes are in fifth place in the bunched-up conference, two games behind first-place Indiana with three games remaining. Ohio State is just 3-3 over its last six games and a visit to Indiana looms after playing the Wildcats. Northwestern has lost five straight games and seven of eight. The Wildcats averaged 41.7 points over their last three defeats.

Northwestern’s closest loss in the five-game skid came during a visit to Ohio State when it lost 69-59 on Feb. 14. Since then, the Wildcats have lost by 21 to Illinois, 28 to Wisconsin and 31 to Purdue last Saturday. The Buckeyes have won seven of the last eight meetings in Northwestern’s home building. Ohio State is 3-5 on the road this season with its most recent away win coming against lowly Nebraska on Feb. 2. The Buckeyes delivered an impressive 68-60 victory over Michigan State on Sunday.

Duke Blue Devils at Virginia Cavaliers (+2, 135)

Duke has a showdown with first-place Miami looming on Saturday, but first the No. 3 Blue Devils face a tough contest when they visit Virginia on Thursday. The Cavaliers have won 15 consecutive home games and sold-out John Paul Jones Arena figures to be rocking at the sight of Duke. The Blue Devils have won eight of their past nine games but are just 4-3 on the road. Virginia is tied for third in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Cavaliers know their next victory will be No. 20 and would like it to come against Duke, the only ACC program Virginia hasn’t beaten in Tony Bennett’s four seasons as coach. “I’m really looking forward to the challenge,” senior point guard Jontel Evans said. “I know it’s going to be a battle.” Duke is bracing for the upcoming return of senior forward Ryan Kelly, who has missed the last 12 games with a foot injury. “I’ve been doing most of my running in the pool, but I feel really good about it and my foot’s feeling good,” Kelly said. “As this week progresses, I think I can become more and more a part of practice.”

Gonzaga Bulldogs at BYU Cougars (+6, 146)

Despite a slew of accomplishments over the past 15 years, Gonzaga has never been the top-ranked team in the nation. The second-ranked Bulldogs may have a chance to climb atop the rankings if they win at Brigham Young on Thursday and finish the regular season by beating Portland on Saturday. Top-ranked Indiana lost to Minnesota on Tuesday, setting the state for the Zags to claim the top spot with back-to-back solid victories.

Brigham Young badly needs an upset of Gonzaga to bolsters its resume in terms of a possible NCAA tournament berth. The Cougars notched an 83-73 home win over the Zags last season but were routed 83-63 when they visited Gonzaga earlier this season. BYU has lost three of five games, including a 64-57 loss to Saint Mary’s in its last West Coast Conference game on Feb. 21. Gonzaga coach Mark Few said it is an honor for the Bulldogs to be ranked second this late in the campaign. “The polls mean a lot more this time of year than they do in November and December, even January, so all of us are being judged on the true body of work,” Few said. “It’s definitely rewarding.”

Betting the Bubble: Teams Fighting for Their Tournament Lives

The Minnesota Golden Gophers’ upset win over the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers Tuesday should quiet all doubters that didn’t have Tubby Smith’s squad making the NCAA tournament cut.

The Gophers’ 77-73 win is not only damaging to the Hoosiers’ bid for the top seed in the NCAA but is crushing to those programs balancing on the tournament bubble, hoping to slide in front of a struggling Minnesota team.

Plenty of schools are still fighting to have their names announced on Selection Sunday, which can offer some added value when it comes to covering the spread. Here are four NCAA bubble team bettors should keep an eye on as the regular season winds down:

Tennessee Volunteers (17-10 SU, 15-10 ATS)

Key wins: Florida, Wichita State, UMass

The other big upset on Tuesday’s card was the Volunteers’ 64-58 home win over Florida. Tennessee is one of the hottest teams in the land, winning six in a row SU and ATS, and the victory over UF puts it in the bubble conversation.

The Vols don’t have the best overall resume but when it comes to the selection committee, it’s like Janet Jackson: What have you done for me lately? Tennessee runs the risk of a huge letdown spot at Georgia this weekend, then plays at Auburn and hosts Missouri in the finale.

Villanova Wildcats (18-11 SU, 16-9-1 ATS)

      Key wins: Marquette, Syracuse, Louisville

A bad loss to Seton Hall all but erases a victory over Marquette last week, leaving the Wildcats bouncing on the bubble heading into their final two games. Jay Wright has had the entire week to prepare for Sunday’s clash at Pittsburgh, which thumped Villanova in their previous meeting.

That game against the Panthers could be the deciding factor on whether or not the Wildcats go dancing. Following that crucial matchup, Villanova wraps up the schedule versus Georgetown at home on March 6. Win or lose Sunday, the game with the Hoyas stinks of letdown.

Virginia Cavaliers (19-8 SU, 16-7-1 ATS)

Key wins: Wisconsin, Tennessee, North Carolina, N.C. State

The Cavs have been the best bet in the ACC in recent weeks, building a 5-1 ATS count in their last six games. However, when it comes to making the field of 68, success against the spread has nothing to do with it.

Virginia missed opportunities to boost its NCAA resume versus Miami and UNC, and now a win over Duke at home Thursday may be its only hope. The Cavaliers’ win over Tennessee gained some shine after the Vols’ upset over UF. The deciding game for Tony Bennett’s kids could be the season finale versus Maryland, another ACC bubble team.

Baylor Bears (16-11 SU, 10-12 ATS)

      Key wins: Kentucky, St. John’s

Baylor is mired in a three-game losing skid and its tournament bubble is on the brink of bursting. The only things that can stop it are wins over Kansas and Kansas State in its final four games. Luckily for Baylor, both of those matchups come in Waco. The Bears haven’t been great bets at home but will be leaving it all on the court versus the Kansas schools.

Baylor does come with a warning, having dangerous lookahead/letdown spots against West Virginia and Texas on the road. The trip to Morgantown Wednesday takes them 1,300 miles from home – BU’s longest conference road trip ever.

Slowing the Fastbreak Key to Covering NBA Spreads

There are plenty of fingers flying in La-La Land, directing the blame for the Los Angeles Lakers’ disappointing season. That latest, according to the Los Angeles Times, is pointing at the Lakers’ inability to slow down opponents in transition.

Los Angeles sits dead last in the NBA in fastbreak points allowed, watching teams run the floor for 16.3 points per game. The Lakers were rolled by the Denver Nuggets’ transition offense in a 118-109 loss to the Denver Nuggets Monday, getting outscored 33-3 on the fastbreak.

"You have to almost overexaggerate getting back on defense. Literally, nobody can go to the offensive boards," Los Angeles guard Kobe Bryant told the L.A. Times when asked for a solution.

All those easy looks and layups being scored by the Lakers’ opponents have led to a dismal 23-34-1 ATS record. And L.A. isn’t alone when it comes to poor transition defense spoiling success against the spread.

The five worst transition defenses in the NBA – L.A. Lakers, Sacramento, Milwaukee, Charlotte, Minnesota – all have ATS records in the red and have a combined ATS mark of 117-159-6 heading into Wednesday.

Here’s a closer look at those five teams getting beat by the fastbreak:

Los Angeles Lakers (28-30 SU, 23-34-1 ATS) – 16.3 fastbreak points allowed

Sacramento Kings (19-39 SU, 24-32-2 ATS) – 16.1 fastbreak points allowed

Milwaukee Bucks (27-28 SU, 26-29-0 ATS) – 15.3 fastbreak points allowed

Charlotte Bobcats (13-44 SU, 20-36-1 ATS) – 14.5 fastbreak points allowed

Minnesota Timberwolves (20-34 SU, 24-28-2 ATS) – 14.2 fastbreak points allowed

Note: The best teams versus the fastbreak – Indiana, Miami, Philadelphia, New York/Washington (tied), Toronto – have a combined ATS mark of 176-151-5 and only the 76ers and Knicks own sub .500 ATS records.

Clippers at Pacers: What Bettors Need to Know

Los Angeles Clippers at Indiana Pacers (-2, 187)

The Indiana Pacers will be without center Roy Hibbert when they seek their sixth straight win Thursday at home against the Los Angeles Clippers. Hibbert was ejected after a brawl with Golden State on Tuesday, and received a one-game suspension. Star forward David West, who also picked up a technical for his role, managed to avoid any discipline. West had a team-high 28 points in the 106-97 victory, which kept Indiana six games behind East-leading Miami.

Like the Pacers, the Clippers are still hoping to chip away at the top spot in their respective conference. Having won six of seven, they entered Wednesday 4 1/2 games behind front-running San Antonio in the West. Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, who could have field days with Hibbert out, combined to go 17-for-20 from the floor in a 106-84 rout of Charlotte on Wednesday. Chris Paul had 13 of Los Angeles' season-high 34 assists.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), Fox Sports Midwest (Indiana)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (41-18, 33-26-0 ATS): The easy win over Charlotte came without two key reserves. Super sub Jamal Crawford, who ranks second on the team to Griffin in scoring, missed the game after his wife gave birth to a daughter Monday in Seattle. Fellow guard Eric Bledsoe sat with a sore left calf. Crawford is expected to return against Indiana. Bledsoe, the top assist man off the bench, is day-to-day. Veteran Grant Hill was questionable Tuesday night with a bothersome back, but managed to play 21 minutes as the Clippers finished a 2-1 homestand.

ABOUT THE PACERS (36-21, 33-24-0 ATS): While it will be shorthanded up front, Indiana may begin to lean a bit more on swingman Danny Granger, who will be playing his third game since returning from a left knee injury suffered just before the season began. Granger, who led the Pacers in scoring the previous five seasons, has predictably struggled a bit since coming back. He is just 2-for-17 from the floor in a total of 38 minutes, but one of his makes helped Indiana keep its edge in the fourth quarter Tuesday.

          TRENDS:

          * Favorite is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
          * Home team is 6-0 ATS in the last six meetings.
          * Under is 11-3-1 in the last 15 meetings.
          * Under is 7-2 in the last nine meetings in Indiana.
          * Clippers are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings in Indiana.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. The Pacers are 30-8 all-time against the Clippers at home.

          2. Each of Los Angeles' last nine games have been decided by double digits. In that span, it has won seven games by an average of 15.7 points. The two losses have come by an average of 24.

          3. Indiana has won 19 of its last 21 home games.
