                    March 12, 2013

Atlanta Hawks vs. Miami Heat The Miami Heat (47-14, 32-39 ATS) won their 18th straight by putting up 105 points on the best defense in the NBA on Sunday, and next on their hit list are the Atlanta Hawks (34-28, 28-32-2 ATS) at American Airlines Arena in Miami Tuesday at 7:35 ET on NBA TV. Many thought that the Heat would face a stiff challenge from the Indiana Pacers on Sunday, a team that allows less than 90 points per game and is generally regarded as the biggest threat to Miami in the East. Instead, the outcome was never in doubt in a 105-91 Heat triumph in a game that was not even as close as that final score. The Hawks are actually in second place in the Southeast Division, but they are a very distant second 13 games behind Miami. More importantly for the Hawks at this point, they are tied with the Boston Celtics for the sixth seed in the conference and seem securely in one of the eight playoff positions with ninth place Toronto 8 games behind eighth place Milwaukee and a whopping 10 games behind the Hawks and Celtics. If Indiana could not stop the Miami offense, it is starting to look like no team in the league can. Facing statistically the best defense in the league, the Heat shot an amazing 55.9 percent from the field against the Pacers, including going 7-for-14 for 50.0 percent from three-point land. What made that performance more amazing is that Indiana's Paul George did his usual outstanding job of defending LeBron James as "King" has only 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. However, Dwayne Wade scored 23, Chris Bosh scored 24 and even Mario Chalmers stepped up to lead all scorers with 26. That only goes to show that although James looks like a slam dunk to win the MVP, the Heat still have so many other weapons that can beat you. James figures to bounce back here so it would be very surprising if Miami does not top 100 points again. After all, the Heat are fifth in the NBA in scoring at 103.5 points per game while leading the league in field goal percentage at 49.6 percent. With that said, there is always the possibility of a letdown after trouncing probably the second best team in the East, and that may show up with less intensity on the defensive end, leading to a potentially high scoring game. Now the Hawks are not an offensive juggernaut, ranking 17th in the NBA with 97.4 points per game, but if Miami does exceed 100 points as expected, then Atlanta basically matching that season average should be enough to push this contest 'over', and the Hawks could potentially reach 100 points themselves if the Heat have a bit of a post-Indiana hangover. After all, Atlanta's leading scorer Al Horford has been on fire as of late, posting four straight double-doubles and averaging 22.9 points on a terrific 62.3 percent shooting over his last 13 games. Horford has also excelled in three meetings with Miami this season despite the Heat winning every game, averaging 19.0 points on a blistering 65.8 percent shooting in those meetings. If the Miami defense does have a letup, Horford can certainly help with keeping Atlanta within sniffing distance while also helping to make the game higher scoring. The Hawks lost by 13 points to Brooklyn on Saturday and the 'over' is 7-0 in their last seven games following a straight up loss by at least 10 points. The 'over' is also 18-7-1 in the Heat's last 26 home games vs. teams with losing road records.
                    Pick: OVER 196.5

Game: Toronto at Winnipeg (8:00 PM Eastern)
                              Pick: Winnipeg -125 (moneyline)
The Winnipeg Jets have played inside out so far on the season, meaning that they have fared better on the road than at home. That should offer some value here, as anytime you can win on the road the wins are going to follow at home. The Jets' defense was pourous early on as they allowed an average of 4 goals per contest in their first eight games, but in their 16 games that have followed, only two teams have even reached 4 goals. Toronto is the team right now struggling on the defensive end. The Maple Leafs have lost two straight and over their last six games, they have allowed 4 or more goals in five of them. Toronto is also just 3-9 in their last 12 off two days rest. Play on Winnipeg.
