Dodgers favorites in Greinke's return from broken collarbone

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke will start his first game against the Washington Nationals Wednesday since breaking his collarbone in scuffle with the San Diego Padres back on April 11.

Oddsmakers have Greinke and the Dodgers priced as -140 home favorites versus the Nationals, with the total set at seven runs. Washington counters with left-hander Ross Detwiler and is a +129 underdog.

"He feels like he's ready," L.A. manager Don Mattingly told MLB.com. "His stuff kind of tells us he's ready. He wants to pitch."

Greinke, a right-handed pitcher, suffered the injury on his left side and made just one minor-league tuneup start during his speedy recovery, which was estimated to take at least eight weeks. He says the fracture isn’t completely healed but doesn’t expect it to hurt his performance Wednesday. The team will limit him to between 80 and 100 pitches.

"I'm sure there's a lot of risk every day," Greinke told the media. "If it makes sense, you do it. If I didn't feel ready, I wouldn't do it. If it was 50/50, you don't do it. I say it's well worth the risk we're taking. If everyone in baseball had the same feeling I have, everyone would be playing. It's nothing superhero-ish. If you felt what I feel, you'd do the same thing."

The Dodgers bullpen could be called into early action if Greinke struggles in his return. Los Angeles’ relievers own a collective 4.47 ERA – fourth worst in the majors – and a 5-10 record with five blown saves.

Greinke is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA over two starts for the Dodgers. He’s 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 15 career innings versus Washington.

Grizzlies on pace to be the best NBA playoff bet ever

The Memphis Grizzlies ride a 10-game ATS winning streak into Wednesday’s Game 5 showdown with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Oddsmakers have tabbed the Grizzlies as 4.5-point road underdogs, holding a 3-1 series lead in the Western Conference semifinal.

Memphis, which is 7-3 SU in the postseason, hasn’t fallen short of the spread since losing to the Los Angeles Clippers, 112-91 as a 5.5-point underdog, in Game 1 of its opening round series on April 20. Grizzlies backers are no strangers to winning bets, with the team going 46-34-2 ATS (against the spread) during the regular season - fourth best against the spread in the NBA.

This current ATS march has Memphis flirting with some of the most profitable playoff teams in the past 22 years. The 2008-09 Denver Nuggets opened the postseason with 12 straight ATS wins before going 1-3 ATS in their final four games and getting eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference finals.

The 2000-01 Lakers, led by Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, were a dominant bet going 12-3 ATS (14-1 SU) en route to their second of three straight NBA titles in the early 2000s. The 1994-95 Houston Rockets also posted a 12-3 ATS postseason mark (11-4 SU), knocking off O’Neal and the Orlando Magic in the finals.

The 2010-11 Dallas Mavericks finished with a 15-4-2 ATS count (16-5 SU) when they shocked the Miami Heat to win the NBA Championship, including a 3-2-1 ATS record in the finals.

The Chicago Bulls went 13-4 ATS (15-2 SU) in the 1990-91 postseason and knocked off Magic Johnson and the Lakers for the first of Michael Jordan’s six NBA Championships.

The most ATS wins in a single playoff run belong to the 2003-04 Detroit Pistons, who finished 16-6-1 ATS (16-7 SU) and beat Los Angeles in five games in the finals, going 4-0-1 ATS in that series.

The Grizzlies aren't the only moneymakers this postseason. The Golden State Warriors covered in eight straight games before going 1-2 ATS in their last three contests versus the San Antonio Spurs.
