Rounding the bases: The best bets in the bigs

Every week we take a look at the hottest and coldest teams as well as the best over and under bets in Major League Baseball.

For the week of July 1-7

        Hot team: Tampa Bay Rays
        Last week: 5-1
        Season: 49-40
Upcoming schedule: vs. Twins, vs. Astros

Skinny: The Rays have won four straight and eight of their last nine to rocket up the American League standings. They’ll have a great chance to keep piling on the wins against the Twins and Astros this week.

        Cold team: San Diego Padres
        Last week: 0-7
        Season: 40-49
Upcoming schedule: vs. Rockies, vs. Giants

Skinny: The Padres have dropped nine straight games to fall out of contention in the NL West, but the Friars are favorites Monday night when they host the Rockies.

        Over team: Philadelphia Phillies
        Last week: 5-1 over/under
        Season: 50-38-1 over/under
Upcoming schedule: vs. Nationals, vs. White Sox

Skinny: The Phillies averaged five runs per game and allowed five runs per game last week, as they continue to be one of the better ‘over’ plays in the bigs.

        Under team: Baltimore Orioles
        Last week: 0-5-1 over/under
        Season: 41-43-5 over/under
Upcoming schedule: vs. Rangers, vs. Blue Jays

Skinny: Baltimore's bats went cold last week, averaging just 2.6 runs per game.

Padres losers of nine straight; faves Monday vs. Rockies

After fighting back to a 40-40 record following a 9-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on June 28, the San Diego Padres have dropped nine straight games to fall to the basement of the National League West.

Any $100 bettor would be up $584.48 if they had faded the Padres in each game of their current losing streak.

Though they have scored plenty of runs in their three most recent losses to the Washington Nationals, San Diego’s bats have really let them down. In the first six games of their losing streak, the Friars managed just seven runs. Even worse, they posted an average of .180 in those first six losses.

The Padres (-122) return home after a nine-game road trip to host the Colorado Rockies (+113) on Monday. San Diego is a better bet at PETCO Park, posting a 25-18 record to date.
