          (Cain/Hamels)

This Phillies team is finished. There is so much internal conflict behind the scenes and when it comes down to it just are not that good and clearly have given up. Hamels never gets any run support and until they prove otherwise why not go against them at this value? Take the Giants.

                        Hondo’s a day-tripper

Hondo lost with the Nationals yesterday afternoon but turned on the turbos last night, scoring big time with the Astros and Yanks to slash the deficit to 775 grotes. Today, Mr. Aitch will work the day shift with Harvey and the Metamucils in Miami as well as Masterson and the Native Americans — 20 units apiece.

Pitching stat: Chicago LHP Chris has dropped eight of his last nine decisions, a byproduct of receiving the least run support of any qualified starter in the majors (2.63 runs per start).

Batting stat: Players on Chicago's current roster are hitting just .221 in 289 at-bats against Indians RHP Justin Masterson.

Pitching stat: Royals RHP James Shields has been the victim of poor run support in his first year with Kansas City, as he has allowed three runs or fewer in six of his seven losses and eight of his 10 no-decisions.

Batting stat: The Royals improved to 10-2 since the All-Star break and 9-3 against Minnesota this season, hitting .295 with 12 home runs versus the Twins.

Weather: Temperatures in the high 70s with partly cloudy skies and winds blowing WNW at 7 mph.

Key betting stat: Royals are 16-5 in their last 21 games as favorites.

Houston Astros at Baltimore Orioles (-260, 8.5)

Pitching stat: Houston RHP Jordan Lyles, who last won on June 18, is 0-3 while yielding at least four earned runs in five of his last six outings.

Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox (-109, 8.5)

Pitching stat: Mariners RHP Felix Hernandez is 7-2 with a 3.13 ERA in 13 career starts versus Boston.

Batting stat: Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia homered and drove in three runs in each of the last two games - the first time in his career he has registered back-to-back games with at least three RBIs.

                                San Fran @ PHILADELPHIA
PHILADELPHIA -1½ +198 over San Francisco

The Giants have dropped five of Main Cain’s last six starts. Cain has made four consecutive starts at home and over that stretch he’s lasted just 15 innings combined and walked 12 batters. Cain was knocked out in the first inning against the Mets and he was knocked out of the third inning by the Dodgers in two of those four starts. Cain does not have a strong profile for a hitter-friendly venue like Citizens Bank Park. His 38%/22%/45% groundball/line-drive/fly-ball split on the year plays at a big risk at this park. Cain isn’t as bad as his numbers suggest but the Giants are a struggling ball club and it would appear that they have a completely different mind-set recently. San Fran has been in a pennant race for several years in a row. This season they are in last place in the NL West, 10 games back of the Dodgers. It’s not that they are 10 games back that makes it too difficult to catch up, it’s that they have to leapfrog over four other clubs that makes it near impossible and it’s simply not going to happen. Those pennant races and championship seasons require high intensity and focus and for the first time in many years, these Giants pitchers are taking a bit of a breather and who could blame them? Matt Cain is among that group.
Cole Hamels is 4-13 with a 4.09 ERA. That’s bordering on ludicrous because outside of a rough April, Hamels has posted ace-like skills since. Over his last five starts, Hamels has walked six batters and struck out 25 over 30 frames. Over his last 10 starts, he has an elite 1.09 WHIP. Hamels has started 22 games this season. If you throw out his first four April starts, 15 of his past 18 have been of the pure quality variety. Hamels has lost five games this season in which he held the opposition to two runs or less. Hamels surface stats are among the most misleading in baseball but underneath he is still an ace. This is a great buy-low opportunity and while we could lay a cheap 10 cents on Hamels, the reward of laying the runs is worth the risk.
