Kansas City extends winning streak to nine games

The Kansas City Royals continue their winning ways as they have extended their winning streak to nine games.

The Royals defeated the Minnesota Twins by a score of 7-2 Thursday afternoon, completing a three-game sweep of their American League Central division rival.

The pitching staff has been excellent throughout the course of the winning streak. Royals' pitchers own a 1.50 ERA during the nine games.

The nine-game winning streak is Kansas City's longest winning streak since 2003 when they began the season 9-0. They have not won 10-straight games since 1994.

Any $100 bettor would be up $879.36 if they had backed Kansas City in each of the previous nine games.

The Royals will open a three-game, interleague set with the New York Mets Friday. KC owns a 5-6 interleague record on the season.

Wade Davis is scheduled to get the start for the Royals.

Three MLB teams books don't want to win the World Series
        By JASON LOGAN

There are two months left in the MLB regular season and sportsbooks are beginning to sweat when it comes to a few teams making a postseason push.

We talked to oddsmakers in Las Vegas and online about which clubs pose the biggest hit to the World Series futures book if they went on to win the Fall Classic. Here are three teams books are cheering against this summer:

        Los Angeles Dodgers

World Series odds: +1,000 (Open), +4,000 (June 24), +600 (Currently)

The Dodgers’ about face in the National League West is quickly becoming a thing of legend. Los Angeles was the worst bet in all of baseball back in June and watched its World Series futures bloat to 40-1, as injuries to its stars stacked up.

Then, Hanley Ramirez returned and rookie sensation Yasiel Puig caught fire, sparking L.A. to a 19-6 run in July. Nevada books always take extra action on California teams and the Dodgers’ turnaround has forced many spots to juice their World Series odds in order to cushion the blow of a potential L.A. World Series win.

“The Dodgers look to be very, very real to me,” Michael Stewart, an oddsmaker for CarbonSports.ag, told Covers. “They're the hottest team in baseball and their only issue might be they're hot at the wrong time of the year because there's no way they can sustain that level of play.”

“The Dodgers can easily navigate their way through the NL playoffs and find themselves in the World Series, setting up a disastrous situation for us.”

        Cleveland Indians

World Series odds: +10,000 (Open), +3,000 (June 24), +2,500 (Currently)

The Tribe were the wiseguys’ pick when it came to season-win totals but no one thought Cleveland would be in the World Series conversation come August. The additions of Nick Swisher and Ryan Raburn have helped spark the offense and a steady home record of 37-19 helps Cleveland in the race.

The Indians ride an eight-game winning streak into Thursday and sit second in the American League Central, two games back of the Detroit Tigers. Following a three-game road series in Miami, Cleveland has a showdown with Detroit at home starting Monday.

        Baltimore Orioles

World Series odds: +4,000 (Open), +1,400 (June 24), +1,200 (Currently)

The Orioles were the red-haired bastard child of the American League East, living in the shadow of the Yankees and Red Sox and failing to keep pace with the talented Rays and big-spending Blue Jays this offseason. Books didn’t expect much, even though the O’s made the postseason cut in 2012.

Baltimore picked up where it left off and is currently chasing Tampa Bay and Boston, sitting third in the AL East at 59-49. The Orioles, however, are stumbling following the All-Star break, going 6-6 heading into Thursday. Their odds could be in need of adjustment after an 11-0 loss to the lowly Houston Astros Wednesday.

Ti-Cats at Eskimos: What bettors need to know

              Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Edmonton Eskimos (-3, 53)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are reeling after back-to-back losses to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in which they were outscored 69-20 and surrendered 298 total rushing yards. On Friday, quarterback Henry Burris and the Tiger-Cats will try to recover when they visit the floundering Edmonton Eskimos. Burris leads the league with 1,510 passing yards, but Hamilton has only managed 99 points - tied with Edmonton for lowest in the league - because of its lack of a running game.

The Eskimos’ only win came against Hamilton in heavy rain at the Tiger-Cats’ temporary home in Guelph, Ont., in Week 2. Quarterback Mike Reilly was pulled briefly after a poor start in last week’s loss to the Montreal Alouettes, but returned to bring Edmonton within one yard of winning on a long final drive. Reilly has completed only 72-of-128 passes and has thrown more interceptions (six) than touchdowns (five) in his first stint as a CFL starter, but the Eskimos are short on options to replace him as they look for their first home win of 2013.

              TV: 9 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (1-4): Running back Lindsey Lamar appeared to have solved Hamilton’s running issues with more than 100 total combined yards in a little over one quarter of action last week before he was injured by a high hit during a kickoff return. Lamar, who has 564 return yards as a rookie, was on the sidelines at practice Monday, along with newly signed linebacker Brandon Isaac. Veteran wide receiver Dave Stala caught two passes for 33 yards in his season debut, which was delayed because of injury.

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (1-4): Running back Hugh Charles had his strongest performance of the year in Edmonton’s 30-20 victory over the Tiger-Cats. Charles ran for 119 yards, including a 70-yard dash that resulted in his only touchdown of the season. The Eskimos defense has 10 sacks, while linebackers Damaso Munoz and JC Sherritt lead the team in tackles with 34 and 31, respectively. Slotback Fred Stamps leads the team with 315 receiving yards and slotback Cary Koch returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown filling in for injured kick returner Joe Burnett last week.

              TRENDS:

              * Tiger-Cats are 0-6 ATS in their last six games overall.
              * Over is 9-2-1 in Eskimo's last 12 games overall.
              * Under is 4-0 in Tiger-Cats last four games overall.
              * Tiger-Cats are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings.

              EXTRA POINTS:

              1. Edmonton is 0-2 at home; Hamilton is 0-2 on the road.

              2. Burris, who is the only Tiger-Cats player with more than 100 rushing yards (139), is on pace to reach 5,000 passing yards for the third time in his career. The veteran pivot is fourth all-time in CFL touchdown passes with 308.

              3. Hamilton has surrendered a league-worst 158 points and is 0-3 against West Division opponents.
