2 Unit Play. Take #544 Pepperdine -7 ½ over San Jose St (10:00p.m., Wednesday, Nov 20)
Here is two California teams that are going in opposite directions as San Jose open their season
0-4 and the Green Wave are a perfect 3-0. The San Jose Spartans are coming back from an
Illinois road trip where their last game they lost 66-79 to James Madison. Pepperdine gets this
game at home and if Stacy Davis and Brendan Lane have big home games the Green Wave win
this game by double-digits. San Jose St is 2-9 ATS following a ATS loss and the Green Wave are
8-2 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games.

1-Unit Play. Take #528 Georgia Tech (-7.5) over Dayton (7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 20)
Brian Gregory is hosting his old team, the Dayton Flyers, in a game that you know he is desperate
to win. Gregory is stacked with his best Tech team yet and you know he pushed them extra hard
this weekend to prepare for this game. The Flyers are a quality A-10 program. But they are a bit
in transition after losing do-everything point guard Kevin Dillard from last year's team. Dayton is 3-
0, but their competition has been weak and all three games were at home, where the Flyers enjoy
one of the most underrated home court advantages in the country. Further, Dayton is on its way
to Hawaii after this game to play in a Thanksgiving tournament. So this game strikes me as a look
ahead spot for this group. It is certainly not a look ahead spot for the Jackets. They have to
sense how important this game is to Gregory and I expect a max effort from the home team here.

2-Unit Play. Take #529 Northwestern (-4.5) over Illinois-Chicago (8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov.
20)
I am not jumping ship on Northwestern. They lost badly at Stanford last week. But Stanford is a much more talented team, that was a true road game, and the Cardinal had a minor touch of, not
revenge but something, after a battle last year. It was just a bad spot for them. The loss to
Illinois State was unforgivable though. But I think we will catch the Wildcats in a nice bounce
back situation here. And it is almost better that they are on the road because I think they will be more focused. Illinois-Chicago has been one of the worst programs in the country the last six or
eight year. They jumped up and had a nice season last year, but that was mainly due to having a
load of upperclassmen and striking gold when UCF transfer Josh Crittle fell into their laps. Three of
the five starters are gone from last year's team and UI-C sucks again. They were blown out by
Eastern Illinois and they lost to Drake. Northwestern is better than both of those squads. The Wildcats also have revenge for a loss to the Flames last year and this is a city rivalry game so
you know it will be somewhat of a battle. But Northwestern has more talent. Chris Collins will
figure out a way not to blow this one. (And I hope he figures out soon that Dave Sobolewski is
pathetic and should be coming off the bench - if he plays at all - because the kid is not a Big
Ten-caliber player.)

2-Unit Play. Take #549 Manhattan (-2) over Illinois State (8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 20)
I'm still looking to bet hard against Illinois State this year and I think we have them in a good spot
here. They are coming off a huge upset win over Northwestern. And beating a big Chicago team
from the Big Ten like that is a highlight of what will be a down year for the Redbirds. Illinois State
lost its best six players from last year's team and they are trying to piece things together with
spit and glue. They have some talent in the form of junior college transfers. But these guys don't
play well together and they are still learning the ropes. Manhattan is a quality team. Unlike Illinois
State they have everyone back from last year, including stud scorer George Beamon, who is back
after a season lost to injury. Playing a true road game isn't going to bother Manhattan. They
already have two true road wins over LaSalle and Columbia, two teams that are better than
Illinois State. The Jaspers are quality. And they will prove it here by dispatching a disorganized
Illinois State team.

2-Unit Play. Take #545 North Dakota State (-3.5) over Western Michigan (7 p.m., Wednesday,
Nov. 20)
I am looking for a bounce back effort from North Dakota State. This team is better than its record
indicates and better than this very young Western Michigan team. WMU is starting two freshmen
and a sophomore, and they have two more underclassmen in their eight-man rotation. That is
young. And I don't know if they are ready to battle the way that this veteran, talented NDSU
team is. North Dakota played St. Mary's tougher than the final score indicated and they were
trading blows with Southern Miss this week. Those are two excellent mid-majors and the Bison
were on their level. Somehow WMU beat New Mexico State. But beyond that its last two wins
have been uninspiring. I'm not 100 percent sure where this team is. But they are shooting a ton of
3's early in the season. And if this game turns into a shooting competition then I guarantee you
NDSU is going to get the better end of that deal. I think the talent is pretty close, with an edge
to the Bison negated by the home court advantage. But in the end it is the No. 23 most
experienced team in the country vs. the No. 263, and I give the visitors the edge by having the
better go-to player in Taylor Braun.

6-Unit Play. #549 Take Manhattan (-2) over Illinois State (8 p.m., Wednesday, November 20)
Note: This is our Game of the Month
Here we have a big mismatch of two programs going in opposite directions this season. Manhattan
is a team we are very fond of. The Jaspers have four starters back from last season, including
swingman George Beamon. He led the MAAC in scoring in 2011 before losing essentially all of last
season to an ankle injury, and obviously that setback derailed the season for Manhattan. Thus far
he has had a dream start to his final collegiate season, scoring nearly 29 ppg. Seven players
average 20 minutes or more for the MAAC program, and this team has a really nice balance to it
beyond their top man. Forward Shane Richards shot 40 percent from three-point range last
season as a sophomore and already is hitting over 54 percent of his three balls this year. Rhamel
Brown was the conference defensive player of the year in 2012. So really, there are parts all over
that are capable of making plays on both sides of the court. Manhattan has a veteran-laden
squad with the experience and expectation for 20+ wins and a possible NCAA birth. On the other
side of this match-up you have an Illinois State team with limited expectations. And actually, we
already cashed in on those limitations when we hit our 5-Unit Game of the Week with Drexel over
these same Redbirds last week. We appropriately fade them again here. The obvious is that Illinois
State graduated too much talent and doesn't have the holdovers to have anything other than a
regression this season. No one player who earned playing time last season for the MVC school
averaged more than 4.5 ppg. Illinois State is scoring 65 points per game early on this season.
Manhattan is putting up over 81 points per game. If this game was in Manhattan on the Jaspers'
home court, the spread would be close to double digits. Because it's in Normal, Illinois perhaps
oddsmakers feel as if that's a big enough difference in terms of the line. I do not. Respectfully,
the books are wrong. There is not enough of a warranted swing for this spread to be this low, and
therefore this is a huge value play on the superior team. I had my eye on this match-up well over
a week ago and pegged this number around five or so. As you can see it's a much more favorable
backing the Jaspers. We have the best player on the floor in Manhattan's Beamon along with the more experienced and balanced squad as a whole. Last week we faded Illinois State justly with
our GOTW on Drexel. We again step out in another ideal spot to bet against the Redbirds, and it's
Manhattan who come through here with a comfortable victory and a 6-Unit winner for us in the
process, 75-65.
