Navy at San Jose State: What bettors need to know
Navy Midshipmen at San Jose State Spartans (-2, 59)
The quick-strike offensive attack the San Jose State Spartans used to build a four-game winning streak earlier this season has abandoned them recently. They'll look to get back on track Friday night as they host the Navy Midshipmen in their second-last game of the regular season. San Jose State looked overmatched in a 38-16 loss to the Nevada Wolf Pack last time out, while the Midshipmen used their nationally renowned rush attack to subdue South Alabama 42-14.
The Spartans had little trouble moving the ball through the air against the Wolf Pack, as quarterback David Fales racked up 326 yards and a score. But the rushing game managed just 58 total yards on the ground as San Jose State fell to 0-2 since stringing together four consecutive victories. Navy had no such trouble with its ball-carrying juggernaut against the Jaguars, finishing with 351 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the one-sided win.
TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2
LINE: San Jose State enters as a 2-point fave, with the total set at 59.
WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the low-50s with wind blowing diagonally across the field at 6 mph.
ABOUT NAVY (6-4): The name on the front of the jersey may be synonymous with the sea, but the Midshipmen are one of the most dangerous teams in the country when it comes to ground-and-pound. Navy ranks sixth in the FBS at 308.9 rushing yards per contest, led by sophomore quarterback Keenan Reynolds (884 rushing yards, 19 TDs). He has had at least one passing and rushing touchdown in five consecutive games, and 26 combined scores on the season.
ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE (5-5): The Spartans averaged 39 points per game during its mid-season winning streak, thanks in large part to Fales. The senior QB has a whopping 3,202 passing yards on the season - second to Fresno State's Derek Carr atop the Mountain West Conference - and his 22 passing TDs are also second to Carr. Jarrod Lawson leads San Jose State with 646 yards, but the team has just seven combined touchdowns on the ground.
TRENDS:
* Midshipmen are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games vs. Mountain West opponents.
* Spartans are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 November games.
* Under is 14-3 in Navy's last 17 games on fieldturf.
* Over is 4-0 in San Jose State's last four home games vs. teams with losing road records. -

WINNING POINTS
PRO BASKETBALL
*Charlotte over Phoenix by 1
The Suns were giving up six fewer points per game than last season under new coach
Jeff Hornacek, but are playing for the third time in four days. Charlotte owns home
wins against Cleveland and Toronto and hopes to have Al Jefferson finally healthy.
CHARLOTTE 97-96.
*Philadelphia over Milwaukee by 3
Philadelphia already has beaten Miami and Chicago at home, but entering this week
the 76ers had yet to be home chalk. Milwaukee has failed to cover in eight of its last
10 Friday games.
PHILADELPHIA 97-94.
***BEST BET
*Toronto over Washington by 15
It's hard to go wrong fading Washington on the road. The Wizards have dropped five
of their first six road contest giving up at least 103 points in all except one. Rudy Gay
is having a big year rebounding, getting steals and blocking shots and his shooting percentage is bound to go up. Underrated point guard Kyle Lowry can match up against John Wall.
TORONTO 107-92.
Indiana over *Boston by 11
As if the Pacers didn't need more help, Danny Granger could be back by now. The
Celtics aren't going to be able to penetrate against Roy Hibbert, who was leading the
NBA in blocked shots. Boston was 1-5 ATS at home versus foes with a winning road
mark.
INDIANA 96-85.
Atlanta over *Detroit by 3
The teams just met on Wednesday. The Hawks entered last weekend ranked fifth in
field goal percentage while the Pistons were last in defensive field goal percentage and
third-from-last in 3-point shooting.
ATLANTA 98-95.
San Antonio over *Memphis by 3
This is the Grizzlies' first game back from a four-game road trip that ended
Wednesday. The Grizzlies fell, 101-94, in their opener against the Spurs.
SAN ANTONIO 96-93.
***BEST BET
*Minnesota over Brooklyn by 16
It's not enough that Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio are healthy and putting up big numbers.
But they are freeing up Kevin Martin for a huge season and unsung Corey
Brewer is coming through with his finest season. So it's no surprise the Timberwolves
were averaging 108 points per game during their first nine games while ranking No.
2 in fastbreak points. The Nets have yet to come together under first-year head coach
Jason Kidd with Deron Williams, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce off to agonizing slow
starts. Brooklyn was 1-5 SU during its first six road contests, including losses to the
Cavaliers, Magic, Wizards and Kings.
MINNESOTA 110-94.
*New Orleans over Cleveland by 7
Aside from Anthony Davis, the Pelicans lack consistent players. But the Cavaliers have
been brutal away from home losing and failing to cover in six of their first road
matchups. The Cavaliers have lost by 15 or more points in four of those defeats.
NEW ORLEANS 101-94.
*Dallas over Utah by 11
Balanced scoring and improved defense have made the Mavs a viable playoff contender. Utah is off to its slowest start since 1974-75. They last in scoring entering last weekend averaging fewer than 90 points per game. Dallas, on the other hand, rankedin the top-five in scoring at nearly 107 points a game.
DALLAS 107-96.
*Portland over Chicago by 4
The Bulls haven't played with the same defensive intensity on the road like they have
at United Center and they had to play in Denver's high altitude last night.
PORTLAND 100-96.
Golden State over *Los Angeles Lakers by 5
Steve Nash is out. Pau Gasol is shooting a career-worst from the field. Kobe Bryant
hasn't been in uniform. The Warriors have the firepower to take full advantage.
Golden State proved that in its opener blowing out Los Angeles, 125-94, at Oracle
Arena.
GOLDEN STATE 112-107.Comment

Providence over Vanderbilt by 18
Friars’ head coach Ed Cooley is on a hunt for an SEC pelt to bring back to Rhode
Island and frame on his wall next to Mississippi State from last year. They’ve already
beaten Boston College of the ACC this season, and Boston College can actually put
the ball in the basket. Vandy? They’ve got plenty to prove because their two home wins were against skinny-minnies who weren’t going to get in their way. Nor did they have a guard capable of leading a power-conference in scoring, which is what Providence has with Bryce Cotton.
PROVIDENCE, 75-57.
2K CLASSIC DETROIT

Detroit is sporting some awful shooting numbers so far and they’ve never been much
of a defensive team under this head coach McCallum.

*South Alabama over Southern Miss by 2
The hosts were pretty tough at Texas in a 84-77 defeat. They led by 14 points at the
half, and canned 13 three-pointers. Anyone capable of hitting that many 3s, and has
an inside scorer like Augustine Rubit, seems dangerous to go against.

Seton Hall over Oklahoma by 11
North Texas’ 6’10”, 250 junior forward Keith Coleman had a 14 and 10 night in
Norman, OK recently. The Sooners were able to weather that production, but this
should be a good night to be Seton Hall’s 6’10”, 270 Gene Teague, and 6’9”, 235
Patrick Auda. Also, North Texas didn’t have a game taker-over like Seton Hall guard
Fuquan Edwin.
SETON HALL, 81-70.
Michigan State over Virginia Tech by 15
Virginia Tech will be coming off a game against VMI, a lean team that likes to run
around as fast as they can and shoot 3s. It ain’t the best way to prepare for a Michigan State team that loves to practice in football pads and helmets.
