      WINNING POINTS

      COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Wake Forest* over St. Bonaventure by 7

      **PREFERRED
NC Charlotte over Florida State* by 3
The Seminoles have been mostly money when they’ve had a margin for error in the
pointspread. Here, they may need to win by as many as three treys in order to cover
the spread, against a Charlotte squad with six double-digit scorers. How do they do
that when they’ve been turning it over 17 times per game? We say that they don’t do
      that.
      NC CHARLOTTE, 75-72.

      Providence* over Yale by 5
Should be a struggle for the host Friars if still without guard Kris Dunn.

        THE GOLD SHEET

        ★★★ KEY RELEASES ★★★
CHARLOTTE by 3 over Florida St. (Tuesday, Dec. 17)

Pittsburgh over Cincinnati by 1 to 3—(at Madison Sq. Gdn.) 12-Cin +6
        70-61, Pitt +1 62-52 CABLE TV—ESPN

WAKE FOREST over St. Bonaventure by 4 to 6—12-DNP

        ★★★ Charlotte 69 - FLORIDA ST. 66—These two had a chance to meet a
few weeks ago in the Puerto Rico Classic before FSU lost in OT to Michigan in
the semifinals. The Wolverines would proceed to get dumped by upstart
Charlotte in the finale at San Juan. Three weeks later, as long as 49ers’ savvy
6-4 PG Pierria Henry (missed recent loss to Davidson, but returned for
subsequent win over App State) is 100%, see no reason fearless, well-balanced
(five DD scorers) Charlotte can’t trade points in Tallahassee until the final
buzzer. Henry’s presence as a true PG is key, but various options are available
to HC Alan Major in the Charlotte backcourt that has been bolstered by the
three-point threat of Tulane transfer Ben Cherry (44% triples). The Seminole
offense has bogged down since Puerto Rico, with G Devon Bookert struggling
(just 7 for 20 from floor past five games; 3.6 ppg after scoring 16 ppg in first four
        games). 12-Fsu +1 79-76

PROVIDENCE 60 - Yale 53—Not sure Yale is going to be an easy out for
Providence, especially with table-setting PG Kris Dunn (5 apg) now on the shelf
for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. It’s no coincidence, perhaps,
that the Friars haven’t covered a game in four tries since Dunn went out,
including very choppy efforts vs. modest Fairfield and Rhode Island. James
Jones’ Eli can control the tempo and owns a solid 1-2 scoring punch with F
        Justin Sears (18 ppg) & G Javier Duren (14.1 ppg). 12-DNP

        OKLAHOMA over Texas-Arlington by 12 to 15—12-Okla -9' 63-59

Washington over TULANE by 1 to 3—12-DNP

Toledo over ARKANSAS ST. by 6 to 8—12-DNP

MARQUETTE over Ball St. by 16 to 19—12-DNP

Wichita State 73 - ALABAMA 66—Since undefeated WSU (pending
outcome at Tennessee Dec. 14) has already notched a noteworthy road victory
at Saint Louis, believe LY’s Final Four participant can topple inconsistent 4-4
Bama (thru Dec. 13), which has dropped 10 straight to Top 10 opponents (OK,
the Shockers are 12th in the AP at our presstime). Nevertheless, look for
WSU’s stifling defense to help fuel its transition game, considering that the
Tides’ vet PG Trevor Releford has more TOs (28) than assists (18). WSU’s
        high-motor, versatile 6-3 soph G Ron Baker (15.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3.6 apg, 1.8 spg,
1.1 bpg) doing everything but selling popcorn. 12-DNP CABLE TV—ESPNU

LOUISVILLE over Missouri St. by 13 to 16—12-DNP CABLE TV—ESPN2

Florida over Memphis by 4 to 6—(at Madison Sq. Gdn.) 12-DNP CABLE
        TV—ESPN

        LOYOLA-MARYMOUNT over Cal Poly SLO by 4 to 6—12-SLO -8' 63-60

                  **PREFERRED
                  *Cleveland over Portland by 5
Portland ranked as the second-highest scoring team with LaMarcus Aldridge and
Damon Lillard each averaging more than 20 points. However, the Trail Blazers could
be vulnerable playing their third road game in four days and then at Minnesota on
Wednesday in a Northwest Division matchup.
                  CLEVELAND 108-103.

                  *Charlotte over Sacramento by 2
Sacramento begins a four-game road trip with this matchup. The Kings were 8-3-1 in
their past 12 away contests through Thursday.
                  CHARLOTTE 100-98.

*Memphis over Los Angeles by 6
The Grizzlies swept the Lakers at FedEx Forum last season, winning the two games by
a combined 21 points. The Grizzlies also edged the Lakers, 89-86, at Staples Center
in mid-November despite missing 12 of their 13 shots from three-point range.
                  MEMPHIS 97-91.

Oklahoma City over *Denver by 5
The Thunder was outshot from the floor 48.2 to 41.9 percent, but still nipped the
Nuggets, 115-113, at home on Nov. 18 thanks to a combined 68 points from Kevin
Durant and Russell Westbrook. The Nuggets already have lost to the Cavaliers and
                  Celtics this month.
                  OKLAHOMA CITY 110-105.

*Golden State over New Orleans by 6
The Warriors shaded the Hornets, 102-101, in New Orleans on Nov. 26 despite missing
                  Andrew Bogut and Andre Iguodala.

                    THE GOLD SHEET

                    PRO BASKETBALL

Portland 102 - CLEVELAND 93—Cleveland appears to be in the process of
righting its ship with wins and covers in 4 of last 5 thru Dec. 12. Although he had
a forgettable game against Atlanta on Dec. 6 when being blanked for the first
time in his pro career, Kyrie Irving has nonetheless tapped a rich vein of form in
past two weeks, culminated in 37-point, 11-assist outburst vs. Knicks on Dec.
                    10. Even with that shutout vs. Hawks, Irving is scoring 20 ppg last four prior to
Dec. 13 game vs. Magic. Cavs have also beaten Western contenders Denver
and Clippers in recent surge. But not sure we want to buck ascending Portland,
9-2 vs. line away (thru Dec. 13) after win at Utah on Dec. 9. 12-Por +1 118-117
                    (2OT-194), Cle +6' 93-88 (197)

Sacramento 105 - CHARLOTTE 102—Sacto in another transitional phase
as it completes the acquisition of Rudy Gay from Toronto. Eventually, this move
might prove a plus for Kings, who have been looking for a scoring small forward
to complement DeMarcus Cousins on the blocks and the vastly underrated
Isaiah Thomas on the perimeter. The thinking among several insiders is that
Cousins’ presence ought to open up more opportunities for Gay, especially on
his raids to the bucket, although, as always, there are delicate chemistry issues
with Kings, who seemed to be on a slight uptick before the trade. Charlotte’s
recent form has been surprisingly good, as recent 5-game cover streak
suggests, but home loss to lowly Magic on Dec. 11 confirms untrustworthiness
of Bobcats. Majority of Charlotte games also “under” (8-2 last 10 thru Dec. 12)
lately, but also compelled to respect Sacto’s recent “over” trends (five straight
thru Dec. 12), especially since and Gay’s presence should add to the Kings’
                    firepower quotient. 12-Sac -2 97-93 (204), SAC -7' 119-83 (208)

MEMPHIS 100 - LA Lakers 92—Memphis is now the shorthanded side in
this matchup, with Marc Gasol (who scored 18 in 89-86 win at Staples Center on
Nov. 15) sidelined into January with knee problems and Kobe Bryant having
returned to the fold for the Lakers. But Bryant’s return has temporarily upset the
balance for Lake Show, which lost and failed to cover first two with Kobe
available. While the onlookers pay attention to Kobe’s offensive stats, his
defensive acumen (or lack thereof) has not avoided shrewd observers who had
noted a downturn in Bryant’s stop-end efficiency even before his Achilles injury.
Whereas Phil Jackson once would regularly assign Kobe to the best offensive
threats on the opposition, Mike D’Antoni dare not do the same these days, and
Lakers were already a worse defensive team this season minus Dwight Howard
                    and Metta World Peace from LY’s team. 13-Mem -3' 89-86 (197); 12-MEM -4'
                    106-98 (200), MEM -4 106-93 (188), LA -2' 86-84 (190)

Oklahoma City 110 - DENVER 103—Rematch of earlier Nov. 18 thriller won
by Thunder (but covered by Denver) in 115-113 nailbiter at Ford Center. As is
often the case, Ok City was bailed out by Kevin Durant’s 38 points, although
Nuggets outshot Thunder 49% to 40% and Ty Lawson (scored 29) almost
matched Russell Westbrook (who tallied 30) point-for-point Mention of Lawson,
however, is important for Denver, as Nuggets’ cause will be helped greatly if Ty
is available after dealing with recent hamstring issues. If he’s in the lineup,
Westbrook’s normal edge is negated, but we’re not exactly looking for spots to
go against Thunder (12-1 SU last 13 thru Dec. 12, and covers in last four thru
                    same date). 13-OKC -9 115-113 (213); 12-OKC -8' 117-97 (209), DEN +1 121-
                    118 (OT-209), DEN +1' 105-103 (219), Den +9' 114-104 (217)

GOLDEN ST.105 - New Orleans 93—New Orleans hanging in there minus
key frontliner Anthony Davis, winning and covering 4 of last 6 thru Dec. 12. And
Pelicans have avoided further depletion with Tyreke Evans apparently able to
play through a recent sprained ankle. But New Orleans could miss Davis vs.
Golden State, against whom the ex-Kentucky star scored 14 and grabbed 11
boards in Warriors’ narrow 102-101 win in the Big Easy on Nov. 25. Although
Andre Iguodola still sidelined with hamstring problems, all other hands currently
on deck for Mark Jackson’s crew, which has a lot of ways to hurt foes, especially
with lethal Steph Curry-Klay Thompson-led three-point shooting hovering near
44% for the season. Warriors 4-1 vs. line laying 6½ or more at Oracle Arena.
