Cutcliffe was originally hired in 1982 part-time and eventually worked his way up to Tennessee quarterbacks coach in 1990. Three years later Cutcliffe was promoted to offensive coordinator where he mentored one PEYTON MANNING. He eventually landed with as Mississippi head coach and recruited ELI MANNING. In a second stint with Tennessee in 2006 he helped Erik Ainge to a top-25 national ranking in pass yardage. Cutcliffe became Duke’s head coach in 2008 and immediately began a strength and conditioning program which basically has revolutionized a once moribound program. Tonight’s total has been kept in check since Duke scored only seven points in an ACC Championship game loss to Florida State, while the Blue Devils recently suspended lead rusher Jela Duncan due to a major rules violation. In addition Duke quarterback Anthony Boone is a virtual unknown on the national level. Of course his counterpart tonight Johnny Manziel is a national sensation and even in a down year he both passed-and-rushed for 41 touchdowns. The elusive star signal caller averaged 5.2 yards per “rush” during the campaign and the Aggies tonight are going with a new PLAY CALLER which will boost an offense that in the final pair of regular season contests on the road produced only 31 combined points on the scoreboard. Prior to the late season slump Texas A+M’s attack scored 40+ points in a ten-game span. As mentioned earlier in this analysis the Aggies spent a fortune to hold on to a hot coaching commodity in Kevin Sumlin who used to run a high-octane spread offense with the Houston Cougars. Sumlin in his early years was actually TURNED DOWN for an assistants job while Cutcliffe was with Tennessee which creates “head coaching intrigue”. In the past two years after covering the spread 4 times in a five-game span Duke has gone 6-0 OVER the total.
