          WINNING POINTS

          PRO BASKETBALL

          **PREFERRED
          Detroit over *Toronto by 8
The Raptors had to play the physical Pacers last night and now return home after
three consecutive road games, so focus could be an issue. The Pistons can match the
Raptors' physical line and have a talent edge at the wing and in the backcourt with
          Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings.
          DETROIT 102-94.

*San Antonio over Dallas by 8
The Spurs were 6-3 ATS in the second of consecutive games, which includes beating
Dallas on the road, 116-107, on Dec. 26.
          SAN ANTONIO 110-102.

*Brooklyn over Golden State by 4
Fatigue-laden Golden State concludes its road swing with its seventh away contest in
11 days. Brooklyn, though, has failed to cover in nine of its last 13 home games
          through this past Friday.
          BROOKLYN 106-102.

          **PREFERRED
          *Atlanta over Indiana by 7
The Hawks could prove dangerous catching the Pacers playing for the fourth time in
five days. Atlanta entered the last Sunday in December having captured five of its last
six. Paul Millsap has stepped up with Al Horford sidelined.
          ATLANTA 100-93.

*New Orleans over Washington by 6
Both teams played the night before on the road. The Hornets usually can be counted
on for a full 48-minute effort, which can't be said about the Wizards. Anthony Davis
and Tyreke Evans have been playing well since returning from their injuries.
          NEW ORLEANS 104-98.

          Phoenix over *Minnesota by 1
The Suns have a winning spread mark when playing on the second of back-to-back
nights and can take advantage of Minnesota's last-ranked defensive field goal percentage.
          PHOENIX 105-104.

*Houston over Los Angeles Lakers by 9
The Rockets could be in line for a big night having last played on Friday. The Lakers
nipped the Rockets, 99-98, at Toyota Center when the teams last met on Nov. 7. The
Rockets' poor free throw shooting killed them as they made just 33 of 52 from the
          charity stripe.
          HOUSTON 112-103.

          *Portland over Orlando by 13
Portland has been dominant against Eastern Conference foes entering January 11-0
          SU, 8-3 ATS against them.
          PORTLAND 105-92.

*Los Angeles Clippers over Boston by 12
The Clippers own a number of impressive home wins against much better competition
than Boston having defeated the Rockets, Thunder, Spurs, Nuggets by an average
of 17.7 points. The Clippers defeated the Celtics in Doc Rivers' return to Boston,
          96-88, on Dec. 11.
          LA CLIPPERS 103-92.

            WINNING POINTS

            COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Cleveland State* over Detroit by 4

Central Michigan* over Miami-OH by 4

            Connecticut* over Harvard by 7

            **PREFERRED
            Oakland* over Wisconsin-Milwaukee by 13
The visitor’s two leading scorers are 6’8” and 6’9” forwards. No guard averages more
than 12 ppg and the second kid off the bench averages only 3.5 ppg. They get only
34 rebounds per game despite playing a relatively weak schedule. At the tempo
Oakland likes to play, there will be a lot of possessions and plenty of opportunities to
get the Milwaukee bigs into foul trouble.
            OAKLAND, 82-69.

            **PREFERRED
Akron over Ball State* by 14
The Akron Zips’ Hawaii Hangover should be behind them, as they’ll have had a couple
of home game to work through it. Akron’s three most recent outings won’t look
like much, but playing three games in four nights in Hawaii sapped their energy and
then they were asked to fly to South Carolina with South Carolina, who had just beaten them in Hawaii. As if they were supposed to care about revenge 6,000 miles and only three exhausted days later (they lost by 33!)? Ball State, scoring only 64 ppg and with a -3 TO Ratio through a weak schedule, represents a huge drop in class.
            AKRON, 75-61.

Western Michigan* over Toledo by 5

            Delaware* over Hofstra by 22
            Hofstra…yeah…they’re not good. DELAWARE, 74-52.

            Northeastern* over NC-Wilmington by 12

William & Mary* over Drexel by 2

Penn State* over Minnesota by 8

Florida* over South Carolina by 20

Buffalo* over Northern Illinois by 9

Bowling Green* over Eastern Michigan by 3

Kent State* over Ohio by 1

Virginia* over Wake Forest by 10

St. Bonaventure* over Richmond by 2

            Duquesne* over Fordham by 5

Massachusetts* over St. Joseph’s by 11
Doesn’t seem like a good road match-up for St. Joe’s. UMass point guard Chazz
Williams can dribble-drive it past his old Hofstra teammate Halil Kanacevic and get
to the hole, or dish for a swish.
            MASSACHUSETTS, 80-69.

Villanova over Seton Hall* by 7
Seton Hall was gathering some injured players back into the fold and onto the floor,
but then big man Eugene Teague was carted off on a stretcher with a head injury, so
this team’s bad injury luck just continues.
            VILLANOVA, 84-77.

            Providence over Georgetown* by 1
Hoya defense suspect, and if Josh Smith gets into foul trouble, so is their offense.
            PROVIDENCE, 65-64.

            Oklahoma* over Kansas by 1
Is it time for a national TV court-storming?
            OKLAHOMA, 69-68.

Loyola-Chicago* over Southern Illinois by 1

Bradley* over Missouri State by 1

Indiana State over Drake* by 1

Northern Iowa over Evansville* by 2

Wichita State* over Illinois State by 20

            Missouri* over Georgia by 15

Kentucky* over Mississippi State by 24
The visitor hits only 29% of three-pointers. Therefore, let the rout begin.
            KENTUCKY, 70-46.

Texas A&M* over Arkansas by 1

            Wisconsin* over Illinois by 12

Colorado over Washington State* by 2

Oklahoma State* over Texas by 14

North Carolina* over Miami-FL by 11

            UNLV* over Nevada by 15

Colorado State over San Jose State* by 9
Moving to the Mountain West Conference will bury San Jose State farther into
            College Basketball’s landfill.
            COLORADO STATE, 74-65.

Fresno State* over Air Force by 13

New Mexico over Wyoming* by 6

            Washington* over Utah by 1

San Diego State* over Boise State by 5
All three meetings, two won by the Aztecs here and in the MWC Tournament, were
            close. How close? 1, 4, 6 points.
            SAN DIEGO STATE, 70-65.

Senators at Avalanche: What bettors need to know

Ottawa Senators at Colorado Avalanche (-142, 5.5)

Captain Jason Spezza is expected to return to the lineup on Wednesday as the Ottawa Senators vie for their season-high fifth consecutive victory when they visit the Colorado Avalanche. A hip injury has made Spezza a spectator during the winning streak. "I've been out of the lineup before and we've won some games and I've been out and we've lost," Spezza said. "But when I've been out before we were able to maintain it when I came back and I just hope to add to the group."

Clarke MacArthur scored 58 seconds into overtime on Saturday as Ottawa posted a 4-3 victory over Montreal to snap a four-game road losing skid. Colorado was attempting to increase its winning streak to four games before suffering a misstep in a 4-3 setback to Calgary on Monday. Top overall pick Nathan MacKinnon tallied twice for the second consecutive contest, but an ankle injury clouds his status for Wednesday's tilt.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, RSNE, TVA (Ottawa), ALT (Colorado)

ABOUT THE SENATORS (19-18-7): After representing his home country in a pair of world championship tournaments, high-octane defenseman Erik Karlsson was named to Sweden's Olympic hockey team on Tuesday. "Obviously very proud and something that I've been looking forward to for a long time," Karlsson said. "You know, ever since you were a kid you've been dreaming about this day and it's going to be a great experience and hopefully be something good for us." Karlsson has collected 10 goals and 29 assists to put him in the thick of the scoring race among blue-liners.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (26-12-4): Captain Gabriel Landeskog recorded an assist for the third straight contest and has scored three goals and set up five others during his seven-game point streak. Landeskog, who will join Karlsson on Team Sweden, collected a goal and an assist as Colorado cruised to victory in the last meeting between the teams - a 7-1 triumph on Oct. 13, 2011. Paul Stastny followed his two-assist performance versus San Jose on Saturday by scoring a goal and setting up two others against the Flames.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Senators are 0-5 in the last five meetings.
                  * Senators are 4-0 in their last four overall.
                  * Avalanche are 5-2 in their last seven home games.
                  * Under is 5-1 in Avalanche last six vs. Eastern Conference.

                  OVERTIME:

                  1. Ottawa G Craig Anderson has yielded 12 goals en route to dropping both career contests against Colorado since being traded from the latter during the 2010-11 season.

                  2. The Avalanche are 3-1-1 on their seven-game homestand, which comes to an end Friday against the New York Islanders.

                  3. MacArthur has scored in three straight games overall, but has been yet to tally in five career contests versus Colorado.

Illinois State at Wichita State: What bettors need to know

Illinois State Redbirds at Wichita State Shockers (-17)

Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall doesn’t want to talk about the sixth-ranked Shockers’ chances of going undefeated this season, but that hasn’t kept others from buzzing about the possibility. Marshall’s squad began the week as one of six unbeaten teams in the country, and the Shockers enter Wednesday’s contest against visiting Illinois State riding a school-record 15-game winning streak. The Redbirds could provide a test after winning seven of their last nine, including a six-point win over Dayton.

Point guard was a question mark for Wichita State entering the season, but sophomore Fred VanVleet has exceeded expectations while posting a 4.28 assist-to-turnover ratio. The 5-11 VanVleet was named Missouri Valley Conference player of the week after averaging 19.5 points on 61.9 percent shooting in Wichita State’s two wins. “He wants to win as much as anybody that I've ever coached,” Marshall told USA Today. “He’s very wise beyond his years in terms of a lot of things, not just basketball.”

                    TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN3

ABOUT ILLINOIS STATE (8-6, 1-1 Missouri Valley Conference): The Redbirds feature a four-guard lineup with 6-9 forward John Jones or 6-10 center Reggie Lynch providing some height inside. Daishon Knight averages a team-high 14.2 points and Zach Lofton (11.7) is coming off an 18-point effort in last Saturday’s 66-48 victory over Southern Illinois. Lynch has a team-high 31 blocked shots for the Redbirds, who are ranked last in the conference in shooting (40.6 percent) and rebounding margin (minus-3.3).

ABOUT WICHITA STATE (15-0, 2-0): The Shockers are outscoring teams by an average of 15.2 points and considered a heavy favorite to win the conference following Creighton’s departure to the Big East. Forward Cleanthony Early leads a balanced attack with a team-high 16.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, and nine different players average at least 12.9 minutes. The Shockers have plenty of depth inside, with Darius Carter, Kadeem Coleby and Chadrack Lufile each sharing time at center.

                    TRENDS:
                    * Under is 6-0 in the last six meetings.
                    * Redbirds are 2-8 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
                    * Shockers are 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine home games.
                    * Under is 19-7 in Shockers last 26 home games.

                    TIP-INS:
                    1. VanVleet has averaged 15.5 points with 21 assists and one turnover over the last four games.

                    2. Illinois State leads the all-time series 37-36, with Wichita State winning nine of the last 10.

                    3. Marshall needs one win to tie Gene Smithson for second on the Wichita State all-time list at 155.

NCAAB betting: Undefeated Wichita State is No. 1 at betting window

College football has dominated the past few weeks, but now that the BCS Championship Game is in the books, college basketball can take hold.

Sports Illustrated college hoops maven Seth Davis recognized that not too many people have been paying attention to the hardwoods, so he offered a primer on 63 teams to either buy, hold or sell.

Buy, sell or hold? Assessing 63 teams with annual Stock Report - College Basketball - Seth Davis

That said, sticking with a team as a fan and sticking with it at the betting window are two very different things. But several of the teams Davis recommended buying/holding are indeed worth betting, including the top three spread-covering units in the nation and six of the top 10.

♦Wichita State, which is 15-0 SU, is No. 1 in the land at 9-2-1 ATS.

                      ♦Utah (12-2 SU) is No. 2 at 7-1-1 ATS

                      ♦Harvard (13-1 SU) is No. 3 at 7-1 ATS.

♦Creighton (12-2 SU) is fifth nationally with a 9-3 ATS mark.

♦Top-ranked Arizona (15-0 SU) is No. 8 ATS at 10-4.

♦Iowa State (13-0 SU) is No. 9 at the betting window at 8-3 ATS.

The Olympic hockey picture got a little more clear Tuesday as the final eight countries - including Canada, Sweden, Finland and Russia - announced their 25-man rosters for February's Winter Olympic earlier Tuesday.
