See spot. See spot bet This week's best NHL spot bet opportunities
Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.
Sean Murphy points out the best spot bet opportunities on the NHL schedule this week.
Letdown spot
The Toronto Maple Leafs will head into Monday's trip-opening stop in Phoenix fresh off a big win over the rival Canadiens on home ice on Saturday. That marked the Leafs fourth straight victory, but three of those came at home, and two by way of a shootout.
The Coyotes are a force at home, where they're 14-7-3 on the season. Phoenix has righted the ship following an ugly stretch, notching back-to-back wins over the Canucks and Devils. Staying home works in the 'Yotes favor against a 'fat and happy' Leafs squad on Monday.
Lookahead spot
The L.A. Kings have been playing a rather uneven brand of hockey lately, and they'll find themselves in a difficult spot on Tuesday, as they head to Columbus for a non-conference date with the red hot Blue Jackets.
The spot is made even tougher thanks to the game that the Kings have on deck two nights later. That's when they'll head back out west for a matchup against an even hotter opponent, and a rival at that, in the Anaheim Ducks. Don't count on a Tuesday night game in Columbus drawing the Kings full attention.
Schedule spot
It's going to be a tough week for the Ottawa Senators, as they pack their bags and hit the road for three games in four nights. After falling in blowout fashion against the Rangers on Saturday, the Sens will make the trip to Washington for a game against the Capitals on Tuesday night.
After enjoying a day off, they'll be back at it in Tampa on Thursday before facing the Hurricanes in Carolina on Friday. We could see a drained Sens squad taking the ice by the time Friday rolls around, and the Canes are never an easy out at home, where they're 11-9-5 this season.
After the Pacers lost to the Hawks, they have won four straight by margins of 27, 24, 28 and 14 points. Their starters are well rested and their bench has had a lot of court time. The Pacers are so tough to beat because they make their free throws and any number of players can be their leading scorer. In their last two games, Indiana shot 21-of-23 and 21-of-22 from the free throw line.
Roy Hibbert played about 26 minutes in each of their last two - on Thursday and Saturday - and this is a positive sign. Indiana is 16-0 ATS when Hibbert played less than 30 minutes in each of their last two games and they had at most one days rest between those games. The SDQL text is:
0=20130118
Note that eight of the games are from THIS season.
In addition, Indiana is 9-0 ATS THIS season after a game in which George Hill was on the floor for fewer than 30 minutes. The SDQL here is:
0=2013
During their four game winning streak, Indiana has allowed an average of 38.7% shooting and 84.8 ppg. As a team, the Pacers are 16-0 ATS as a rested favorite after a double-digit home win as a favorite of more than three points in which they allowed less than 43% from the field. See for yourself with this SDQL text.

Golden St has not been playing well recently. They are 2-3 their last five, beating only the Celtics 99-97 at home and the Pelicans 97-87 - who were on a seven-game losing streak. In general, New Orleans shot terribly, with Eric Gordon, going 3-of-17 from the field. The Warriors are 0-9 ATS (-9.67 ppg) at home with at most one day of rest after a game in which they allowed less than 40% from the field.
The Pacers have a lot left in the tank and should get the job done here.
