Mid-major programs can play it two ways early in the season: They can build a decent record by playing other obscure teams or they can take on the iron, bring some money into the athletic department and toughen up for the league season. Long Beach took the latter road this season and was hammered early on, suffering a nine-game losing streak including getting whacked by the likes of Arizona, Kansas State and Michigan. But LBSU is now a contender in the Big West and the 49ers have six straight covers (5-1 SU in that stretch). The Big West is wide open and with everyone healthy and playing well, Long Beach figures it has as good a shot as anyone come tournament time. Up next: UC Santa Barbara Thursday.
ATS losing streak
Denver Nuggets
Any team that gets offed by the Knicks by 27 points has issues, and the Nuggets have some serious ones as they stagger though a road swing against primarily Eastern Conference opponents. Denver has covered only once in the last seven games and was whacked by a ticked-off Pacers team coming off a loss to Orlando Monday. On Saturday night, the Nuggets lost to the Pistons, and Detroit was so unimpressed that it fired its coach despite the win. Life gets no easier for Denver, with three of the next four on the road. Up next: at Minnesota Wednesday
Over/under streak
Northwestern Wildcats
It’s been a vanilla season from the get-go for the Wildcats, who are 12-12 overall and 5-6 in the Big Ten. But in an up-and-down year, Northwestern has built a solid eight-game Under streak – in no small part due to its lack of offensive options. The Wildcats failed to score more than 50 four times in the stretch, and in a 54-40 loss to Michigan State had only 13 field goals. Yuck. Up next: at Big Ten leader Michigan State (20-4) Thursday.
