Sunday's Olympic hockey cheat sheet

Here's a look at Sunday's Olympic men's hockey action (odds courtesy Bet365):

Austria vs. Norway (-286)

Third place in Group B is at stake when the Austrians and Norwegians tangle in the first game of the day. Neither team has fared all that well so far, with Norway showing less of a propensity for giving up goals - surrendering a modest nine in losses to Canada and Finland - while the Austrians have scored twice as many goals - 4 to 2 - but have given up a whopping 14 to date. Austria boasts more firepower up front thanks largely to New York Islanders teammates Thomas Vanek and Michael Grabner, but have struggled mightily in their own zone.

Russia vs. Slovakia (+580)

The host Russians will be out for blood after dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 shootout decision over the United States in a game that essentially decided top spot in Group A. The defeat will make the path to gold that much tougher for Russia, but it gets a bit of a reprieve in its round-robin finale against a disappointing Slovakian side that has dropped its first two games by a combined score of 10-2. Neither Peter Budaj nor Jaroslav Halak has looked good at all in net for Slovakia, while the offense was virtually non-existent in its stunning 3-1 loss to Slovenia.

Slovenia vs. United States (-10000)

The Americans are riding high following the thrilling victory over Russia, and can complete a perfect round-robin with a victory over Slovenia. T.J. Oshie was the hero in the shootout, thanks to an Olympic format that allows a team to use the same shooter anytime after the third round of the sudden-death format. The Slovenians have already earned their "gold medal", having earned their first-ever Olympic victory with their triumph over Slovakia; they'll be hard-pressed to repeat the feat against a U.S. side playing the best hockey of any team in the competition.

Finland vs. Canada (-400)

The final matchup of the preliminary round will determine which team prevails in Group B. Canada took a while to get going, but rolled to an easy victory over the Austrians on Friday and has surrendered just one goal through the first 120 minutes of play. Finland has been just as impressive so far, tallying 14 times in easy victories over Norway and Austria. Expect both teams to roll with their top netminders for the must-win contest, with Tuukka Rask getting the call for Finland and Roberto Luongo favored slightly over Carey Price in the Canadian net.

The All-Star Game is in New Orleans this season which is why it made perfect sense that Anthony Davis was chosen to play for the first time in his young career. Davis, who plays for the Pelicans, is replacing Kobe Bryant. Bryant was voted to start in what would have been his 16th straight appearance in the game but a knee injury will keep him sidelined for indefinitely. Davis, playing in his home arena, could be a dark-horse pick to win the MVP of this game.

Chris Paul, who is playing for the Western Conference in this year’s game, took home last year’s honors with 20 points, 15 assists and four steals in the West’s 143-138 victory over the East. Potentially the star of the entire evening is Damian Lillard, of the Portland Trail Blazers. Lillard, who is playing in his first ever All-Star Game, will be a part of the Dunk Contest, Three Point Shootout and Skills Competition. Lillard is one of nine members of the Western Conference team who averages over 20 PPG in a game that will definitely come down to which team is capable of putting points on the board.

The team from the Eastern Conference has just four players who average over 20 PPG. Fortunately, one of those players is LeBron James. James is the most polarizing player in the NBA and has taken home the All-Star Game MVP honors twice (2006, 2008). This should be an exciting and fun game to watch, but the Eastern Conference will definitely be out to get some revenge as they have been defeated in three straight years. This year’s Eastern Conference team features three players who will be making their debuts in this prestigious game. John Wall, DeMar DeRozan, and Paul Millsap have all had fantastic seasons to date and have earned the right to represent in the game.

The East team has two of the top three scorers in the NBA in LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony. In last year’s game, Carmelo Anthony finished the contest with 26 points and 12 rebounds. LeBron James had 19 points and five assists. Dwyane Wade, who is starting for the Eastern Conference, could play limited minutes as he continues to deal with nagging injuries. Wade had a big game last year with 21 points and seven assists. Playing in his second career All-Star Game is Paul George, who got the nod as a starter this season after the fan vote. George is having a career year with 22.2 PPG and 6.4 RPG. Last season, the exciting young player had 17 points in his debut and he should bring some flare to the contest as he is one of the NBA’s best in-game dunkers.

Chris Bosh, who started in last year’s game, is a reserve this season and will definitely be looking to bounce back from a poor performance in last year’s game. Bosh had just six points (3-of-9 FG) and two rebounds in 23 minutes last season, but he has been outstanding this season for the Heat and should be in for a solid game. Joakim Noah, Roy Hibbert and Joe Johnson may not be the most exciting players to watch but in a game where most players are trying to put on a show, these guys provide the toughness and winning mentality that could allow the Eastern Conference to get back into the win column.

The Western Conference team is looking to continue their dominant stretch over the East with a win on Sunday night. The team has the leading scorer in the NBA in Kevin Durant (31.5 PPG) and he will be looking to top his performance in last year’s game in which he scored 30 points (13-of-24 FG) and grabbed six rebounds. Chris Paul had 15 assists on his way to winning the MVP honors last year and he should be able to repeat his performance with an abundance of superstars playing around him. One of those players is his teammate Blake Griffin. Griffin had 19 points (9-of-11 FG) in last year’s game and has only improved as a player since then. He should also be able to provide some jaw dropping moments with his dunking ability.

Stephen Curry (24.6 PPG, 9.0 APG) will be playing in his first career All-Star Game and nobody in the league is capable of getting as hot as Curry can. If he gets his stroke going, there’s no doubt that he is a serious threat to grab the MVP trophy. Also making his All-Star Game debut is Damian Lillard (20.7 PPG, 5.7 APG), who is also a deadly shooter who can make his presence felt in a hurry. His teammate, LaMarcus Aldridge, has been one of the NBA’s most dominant big men this season and will surely be out to prove that he should’ve been starting in this game.

Kevin Love is a stat-sheet stuffer who will surely be the most active player on the boards in this game. James Harden, Dirk Nowitzki and Tony Parker are all no strangers to this stage and their experience and ability to cause mismatches with whoever they are going up against will make the Western Conference a difficult team to beat yet again.

Majority of cash on Under in All-Star Game

When the NBA All-Star game gets underway from New Orleans Sunday, we don't really know what will happen. It's an exhibition in every sense of the word.

One thing we do know, however, is that there will be absolutely no defense. Which is why oddsmakers set the totals for this game fairly close to 300.

Despite that, and also the fact that the O/U record in the last seven games is 5-1-1, bettors are backing the Under this time around.

Books opened the NBA All-Star Game with the West as faves at either -4 or -4.5 and a total of 292.5. Up until now, action has been behind the underdog Eastern Conference squad and the Under.

"We opened the West -4 and have gone to -4.5," says Mike Perry of Sportsbook.com. "No sharp action as we are just moving with the market here. Seventy percent of bets are on the East and 73 percent of bets on Under."

No. 15 Michigan hosts No. 21 Wisconsin Sunday

Two of the best teams in the Big Ten due battle on Sunday as No. 21 Wisconsin visits No. 15 Michigan.

The Badgers and Wolverines played in Madison on January 18, and it was Michigan stealing a rare road victory against Wisconsin, winning 77-70. In that game, SG Nik Stauskas scored 23 points as Michigan was able to win in this series for just the second time in 14 tries (6-8 ATS). The Wolverines connected on 55 percent of their shots that night, while also making 7-of-13 from the three-point line. Michigan (12-9-1 ATS overall, 4-5 ATS on road, 8-4 ATS in Big Ten) has been on a tear as of late, winning 12 of its past 14 games (9-4-1 ATS). The Badgers appear to have gotten things rolling again with three straight wins following a stretch of five losses in six games. Wisconsin (11-12-2 ATS, 5-8-1 ATS at home, 4-7 ATS in Big Ten) has done a very good job against ranked teams this season, going 4-1 with the lone loss being a one-point defeat to Ohio State on Feb. 1. In Wisconsin’s most recent victory over Minnesota on Thursday, the Badgers went 30-of-36 from the free throw line. Bo Ryan has as much offensive talent as he has had in recent memory, but his club must become better at sharing the ball with each other. The Badgers had only eight assists on 21 field goals on Thursday, as they try and go one-on-one too much. While it worked against Minnesota, the Michigan defense will not be that easy to score on.

The Badgers enter Sunday's game ranked 124th in the nation in scoring (73.0 PPG), 248th in assists (11.9 APG) and 268th in rebounding (33.2 RPG). But they still rank second in the nation in turnovers (8.6 per game) and limit opponents to a mere 53.0 PPG on 42.3% FG and 32.8% threes. Wisconsin has a balanced offensive attack, as four players average double-figures in scoring. SF Sam Dekker (13.4 PPG, 47% FG, 6.0 RPG), SG Ben Brust (13.2 PPG, 40% threes, 4.7 RPG), C Frank Kaminsky (12.5 PPG, 41% threes, 6.0 RPG) and PG Traevon Jackson (10.7 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.9 APG) all are capable players that can contribute in many different ways. Dekker is one of the most difficult matchups in the Big Ten. At 6-foot-7, the small forward can score off the bounce, but will take a smaller defender in the post. As a team, the Badgers shoot 37.1% from the three-point line. SG Josh Gasser (8.7 PPG, 4.0 RPG) is the best long-range shooter on the team (42% threes), and is just another shooter that the Wolverines will have to worry about. This starting five scored 63 of the 70 points when these teams met on Jan. 18 with Gasser scoring 16 points (4-of-5 threes), Brust and Kaminsky netting 14, Dekker posting a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards and Jackson shooting poorly (3-of-11 FG), but still contributing seven points, five assists and three rebounds.

Michigan has 75.5 PPG (78th in Div. I) this season, shooting the ball at a 48.2% FG clip (20th in nation). This club is one of the best three-point shooting teams in the country, hitting at a rate of 39.3% (26th in Div. I). However, like Wisconsin, it has really struggled on the glass (33.0 RPG, 274th in nation). A big portion of that is because of the injury to PF Mitch McGary (8.3 RPG), who was lost for the season with a back injury. Although the Wolverines don’t generate many blocks (2.8 BPG, 270th in Div. I) or steals (5.4 SPG, 265th in nation), they allow just 64.4 PPG (46th in Div. I) on 43.5% FG and 33.0% threes. SG Nik Stauskas (16.9 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 3.5 APG) has gone from talented role player to a guy that is capable of leading a team. He is still a devastating three-point shooter (45% threes), but he is also able to get to the rim and finish. That versatility in his offensive arsenal has made him extremely difficult to stop. With PF Glenn Robinson III (12.9 PPG, 4.3 RPG) and SG Caris LeVert (12.5 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 2.8 APG), Michigan has a trio of scorers extremely tough to contend with. Robinson scored 14 points (6-of-8 FG), but had zero rebounds in 31 minutes in last month's win in Madison, while LeVert piled up 20 points, seven boards, four assists and four steals in that victory. PG Derrick Walton Jr. (8.8 PPG, 3.0 APG, 2.7 RPG) is continuing to improve as a freshman point guard. He is shooting 41% from the three-point line, making defenses have to respect him from the outside. He is tremendous off the bounce, where he is able to finish at the rim, or hit the open guy for the perimeter shot. Both of these teams are able to knock it down from deep, but this game will come down to which one of these poor rebounding teams can take control on the glass.

Game of the Day: Villanova at Creighton

Villanova Wildcats at Creighton Bluejays (-3.5)

In its first meeting against Villanova on Jan. 20, Creighton drilled a Big East- and school-record 21 3-pointers while handing the Wildcats their worst home loss since 1980-81. No. 6 Villanova, which hits the road Sunday in a showdown between the top two teams in the conference, holds a half-game lead over the 17th-ranked Bluejays and has won six straight since their 28-point setback. "I think a lot of people watched that game and learned how not to play them," Wildcats coach Jay Wright said.

Wright suggested the Wildcats’ overall aggressiveness worked against them in the first meeting and perhaps no Creighton player benefited more than Ethan Wragge, who tied a school record with nine 3-pointers. Villanova began its three-game road trip with an 87-62 win over DePaul on Wednesday, but faces a difficult challenge against the Bluejays, who have won four of five since routing the Wildcats. Creighton, which posted a 20-win season for the 16th time in 17 years with Thursday’s five-point win at Butler, is looking for its 16th straight home victory.

WHY BET VILLANOVA (22-2 SU, 17-5 ATS, 15-7 O/U): The Wildcats took a page out of the Bluejays’ book in the win over DePaul, knocking down a season-high 15 3-pointers while leaving Wright pleased with his team’s focus. “I know they're going to concentrate on (Sunday), but for a team to go in and concentrate like they did against DePaul is impressive to me," Wright told the school’s official website. Villanova has also picked it up at the defensive end, allowing 61.4 points over its last five games after surrendering 96 to Creighton and 85 five days later at Marquette.

WHY BET CREIGHTON (20-4 SU, 13-9 ATS, 8-13 O/U): In addition to passing Allan Houston and Kevin Bradshaw on the NCAA's career scoring list against Butler, Doug McDermott delivered his second game-winning basket in the Bluejays’ last three games and third of the season after never having done so previously. Incidentally, McDermott’s go-ahead 3-pointer sparked a game-ending 7-0 run and gave coach Greg McDermott (Doug’s father) his 100th career win at Creighton. Greg McDermott needed only 134 games to do so, allowing him to reach the benchmark quicker than all but one coach in school history.
