Game: Chicago Cubs @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Time: Thursday 04/03 12:35 PM Eastern
Pick: Chicago +155 (moneyline) at Bovada

It has been over a century since the Chicago Cubs last claimed a World Series Championship, and it certainly looks like one more year will be added to the drought. The Cubs have dropped the first two in this series. They now hope to salvage game 3 this afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs will go with Jason Hammels who was 6-3 on the road a year ago. The Cubs signed him as a free agent from Baltimore, where he was a winning pitcher over two years. Wandy Rodriguez gets the ball for Pittsburgh, and he has battled injuries coming off of last season. The Pirates had trouble closing out a series late last year, finishing 1-4 in series finales. They may have that satisfied feeling heading into today, and Hammels is capable of winning on the road. Go with the Cubs.

                Joe Gavazzi - 2% SMU

Analysis: NIT Final Minnesota vs. SMU (-3) 7:00 ET ESPN MSG 2* SMU (-3) CIT Finals Thursday features my Top of the Tickets Statistical Surprise Winner tonight. No knock on the Gophers, who have gone 7-2 SU since losing at Ohio St. February 22nd. The only losses in that timeframe have come to Michigan and Wisconsin. On Tuesday night, they held off a Florida St. comeback for a 67-64 win. Prior to that game, SMU authored one of their classic comeback victories in a 65-59 win, and cover, against Clemson. The Ponies, more than any other team, have used the NCAA snub as motivation for this event. As a team, they are highly motivated to win this event for their 2nd year veteran HC Brown, who sees this return to his NYC roots as a bit of a homecoming. A victory tonight would punctuate his long and storied career. Must respect the Gophers' pressure defense. But, SMU is an even better defensive team, allowing just 62/38/32 with a +4.7 rebound margin. Led by Hollins & Hollins (not a law firm), the Gophers may have more high-profile players. But, SMU has more offense from more sources. In using a 9-man rotation, the Mustangs average 48% from the field, 38% from the arc with 15 Assists per game. In addition, SMU has PG Moore, who is capable of breaking the Minnesota pressure defense contributing to transition baskets in the open court. Take the superior offensive and defensive team with the greater motivation.

                              3% Miami (-105)

For the 3rd straight day, we line up with the Marlins and their improved offense (have scored 19 runs in 3 games). Yes, I know it’s the Colorado staff. But, I continue to believe this will be a far better offensive Miami team than last season. The Rockies won only 29 road games each of the last two seasons. They were just 7-20 away, following a victory last year. That makes this the ideal spot for the Marlins to capture the series win. Morales is a re-tread that has returned to Colorado. In 110 games lifetime, he has a 5.06 ERA. Turner got off to a hot start last year, going 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA in his first 8 starts. Let’s hope he duplicates that type of beginning again today.

Yale at Murray St. (-7-) 7:00 ET CBC

                              4% Murray St. (-7-)

In Tuesday’s shocking result, Yale held VMI, the highest scoring team in the nation at 88 PPG, to 26 points below their average in a 75-62 victory. The win came at a price with a hand injury to their best player, Justin Sears. Not only is Sears the best player for the Eli, he may have been the best player in the Ivy League this year. That includes all the great Harvard players. Though his absence has been reflected in the line by 2 to 3 points, it will be hard for Yale to overcome his injury. Murray was a Top Play winner on this site for us on Tuesday with a 98-75 romp over Pacific. It lifted the Racers’ recent record to 16-5 SU. Using their up-tempo style, Murray averages 79 PPG on 48% shooting and 38% from the arc. With a victory Tuesday night, Murray is now 51-8 SU at home L4Y, including 15-1 SU this year. As home chalk to -8, Murray is a perfect 8-0 ATS this season.
