Trail Blazers at Spurs: What bettors need to know

Portland Trail Blazers at San Antonio Spurs (-6.5, 205.5)

The Portland Trail Blazers went to overtime three times in the first round and needed a last-second jumper from Damian Lillard to avoid a Game 7. Their reward for such perseverance is a date with the top-seeded San Antonio Spurs, who host Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals on Tuesday. The Spurs went seven games with the Dallas Mavericks but left no doubt who was the better team with a 119-96 drubbing in Game 7.

San Antonio gave Portland a performance about which to worry on Sunday when it led by as much as 31 points and was never challenged in the second half. “I’m certainly glad it’s over,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters. “(The first-round series) kept many of us up, night after night, trying to figure (the Mavericks) out. We’re thrilled, and I think our best game was (Game 7).” The Trail Blazers echoed similar sentiments upon reaching the second round for the first time since 2000 and have the shooters to spread San Antonio out.

      TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS: Lillard was the hero with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in a 99-98 Game 6 victory but LaMarcus Aldridge came out of the first round as a star after putting up back-to-back 40-point outings to start the series and averaging 29.8 points and 11.2 rebounds in the six games. “It was a great series,“ Aldridge told reporters. “We feel like we got better from it … and we feel like we should be better for the next round.” Aldridge’s mid-range game will force Spurs star Tim Duncan outside the paint, leaving room for Lillard to drive and Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum space to spot up on the perimeter. Lillard averaged 25.5 points and 6.7 assists against the Rockets and went 23-of-47 from 3-point range.

ABOUT THE SPURS: San Antonio All-Star point guard Tony Parker won’t hoist as many 3-pointers as Lillard but will make the young Portland star work on the defensive end by attacking the paint and running the pick-and-roll with Duncan and Tiago Splitter. Parker put up 32 points in the Game 7 victory on Sunday and averaged 19.9 in the series. Duncan averaged 17.3 points on 58 percent shooting and 8.4 rebounds in the first round and Manu Ginobili put up 17.7 points in the series to cap a strong showing for the “Big Three.” The Spurs also got a boost from Danny Green, who struggled early in the series but came on with 16.5 points on 12-of-14 shooting in the last two games.

      TRENDS:

      * Underdog is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
      * Trail Blazers are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games.
      * Spurs are 1-8 ATS in their last nine games overall.
      * Over is 5-1 in Spurs last six overall.

      BUZZER BEATERS:

      1. Lillard averages 26.3 points in seven career games against the Spurs.

      2. The teams split four regular-season meetings, with each taking one game on the other’s home court.

      3. Splitter shot 61.9 percent in the opening round and should be well rested after playing only 15 minutes while dealing with foul trouble in Game 7.

        Tuesday's MLB betting cheat sheet

        Going Low

The "under" bet was a strong play Monday, with a 3-9-1 O/U mark representing one of the strongest single-day results all season. Only San Francisco's 11-10 win over Pittsburgh, Milwaukee's 8-3 victory over Arizona and San Diego's 6-5 triumph over Kansas City exceeded their respective totals.

        Diamondbacks Still Snakebitten

No team has returned worse value than the Diamondbacks, and that trend continued with Monday's loss to the Brewers. Arizona fell to -1,358 units for the season, and is installed as a +136 underdog for Tuesday's contest in Milwaukee.

        Home Favorites Abound

Bettors looking for some strong road favorites will be disappointed Tuesday. Only one team is listed as a road fave - San Francisco is at -112 against the host Pirates - although the Los Angeles Dodgers may be favored against Washington when those odds are posted later Tuesday.

        Pitching Notes

        * San Francisco Giants hurler Tim Hudson has been one of the most reliable starters in the majors of late, going 10-1 against the moneyline in his last 11 starts. Hudson is also on a three-game "under" streak, after putting together runs of 0-3, 6-0-1, 0-5 and 5-0 O/U last season.

        * Kansas City Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie is a sensational "under" play away from Kauffman Stadium, going 1-10-1 O/U in his previous 12 road outings. Guthrie and the Royals (+104, 7) face Robbie Erlin and the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.

        Hitting Notes

        * San Francisco Giants catcher/first baseman Buster Posey has six multi-hit efforts in his last eight games, raising his average 68 points to .292 while helping his team go 7-1 in that span. His surge hasn't done much for the Giants' totals, however; they're just 2-6 O/U over that stretch.

        * Minnesota Twins first baseman Chris Colabello has cooled off after a hot start, going just 5-for-40 with one RBI in his last nine games. Not surprisingly, the Twins - one of the hottest "over" plays in the first month of the season - have gone 0-5 O/U in their last five.

        Total Streaks

Seattle Mariners (7-2-1 O/U): The Mariners' offense has been firing on all cylinders over the past week, averaging nearly six runs to lead the club to a 6-1 record over its last seven games. Seattle is a +155 underdog Tuesday against host Oakland.

        Prop of the Day

Extra innings could mean extra cash for bettors with the stomach to make a bet on the Texas Rangers and Colorado Rockies. The teams are -1,400 to play more than nine innings - tied with the Houston Astros-Detroit Tigers matchup for the longest extra-innings odds of the day.

        Injury Watch

        * Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw is expected to return to the rotation after spending the majority of the season on the disabled list with a back injury. Kershaw has been a strong under play since the middle of last season, going 4-12-2 O/U in his last 18 starts.

        * Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie left Monday's game with tightness in his right hamstring and is questionable for Tuesday. Lawrie had gone 14-for-30 in his previous seven games, helping the Blue Jays post a 6-1 O/U mark in that span.

        Weather Watch

        * Fans at Progressive Field should expect partly cloudy skies and wind blowing in from right field at 9 mph for the game between the host Indians (-141, 8) and the Twins. Teams batted .247 in 16 games last season with the wind blowing in from right.

        * Wind at Angel Stadium of Anaheim will blow out to center field at 9 mph for Tuesday's game against the visiting Yankees (+126, 8). Teams averaged nearly nine combined runs per game in 49 contests in 2013 with the wind blowing out to center.

        Umpire Note of the Day

The home team is 14-3 in umpire Mark Carlson's last 17 games behind home plate involving the Padres. Carlson will call the balls and strikes when San Diego entertains Kansas City.

            Hondo -

Hondo slipped deeper into the red Monday night when the Royals succumbed in the 12th in San Diego to overwhelm his comeback triumph with the Marlins and push the filthy figure to 770 clendenons.
Tuesday night: Mr. Aitch will stick with the Marlins over the Metamucils — 10 units on Alvarez. Also, 10 apiece on Tillman to slay the Rays and Nicasio to show Ross who’s boss.

San Francisco Giants (Hudson) (-115) at Pittsburgh Pirates (Morton) 7:05 ET

                          4% San Francisco (-115)

We follow the momentum of two teams and two pitchers that are headed in opposite directions. Following the 11-10, 13-inning win last night on this field, the Giants are now on runs of 10-1 and 6-0. In their last 3 games at PNC Park, SF has scored 29 runs on 52 hits. Pittsburgh is 12-20 this season due to a recent 4-12 slide. In 16/32 of their games, they have scored 2 or less runs. It has been 9 games since a Pittsburgh starter recorded a quality start. The bullpen (closer Grilli on the DL) has a 115 index, among the worst in baseball and the largest decline (from 155 LY) of any team in MLB. Morton has no wins in his previous 12 starts. He is 0-4 this year, losing his last 4 starts with a 4.21 ERA YTD and a mediocre 25/14 KBB. Contrast that to Hudson. SF has won 5/6 Hudson starts over which time he has a 4-1 record with 2.17 ERA. In 45 2/3 IP, Hudson has allowed just 34 BR with a 31/2 KBB. Those peripherals are among the MLB leaders. Hudson has worked 7+ innings in each of his 6 starts, allowing 2 or less earned runs in 5/6. A pair of road outings have resulted in a 1.23 ERA. Follow both team and pitcher momentum for a Top Play victory!

NY Mets (Colon) at Miami Marlins (Alvarez) (-120) 7:10 ET

                          3% Miami (-120)

The Mets limp in with a recent 1-4 mark after falling 4-3 in the 9th last night at Miami. On a field where the Marlins are 15-5 for the year, Miami is recently 9-1, averaging 6.3 RPG. For the season, Miami has a .305 BA at home. Though Alvarez is just 1-2, he has a 3.28 ERA. In his most recent 3 starts, Alvarez has worked 21 innings, allowing just 6 runs on 16 hits with a 12/4 KBB. A trio of appearances against the Mets has resulted in a record of 2-0 with a 1.77 ERA. Though Colon has a 29/4 KBB, he has gotten ripped on the road. It is a reason for his record of 2-4 with a 5.65 ERA. In a trio of road starts, spanning 16 2/3 IP, Colon has allowed 16 runs and 27 hits for an 8.64 road ERA with a .365 BAA. In his most recent 4 starts, Colon is 1-3 with a 7.61 ERA. That includes his most recent start, a 7-4 loss at Colorado. In that game, Colon lasted just 4 2/3 IP, allowing 7 runs on 10 hits. Play the strong home field of Miami with a pitcher who is in far better current form.

                          Seattle Mariners (Elias) at Oakland A’s (Chavez) (-1 ½ R, +130) 10:05 ET

                          3% Oakland (-1 ½ R, +130)

Break up the Mariners! A 3 game win streak has lifted the Mariners to a recent record of 8-2, in which they have averaged 5.5 RPG. Elias has been a pleasant surprise for the Mariners with a 3.09 ERA. That has been even better in 4 road starts, where Elias is 2-1 with a 2.59 ERA. That all ends tonight against an Oakland team, who lost 4-2 on this field last night. Now Oakland, an outstanding 13-6 away, has dropped to 6-7 on this field with 4 consecutive defeats. Look for the bounce back by an Oakland team that is 8-4/loss this season. Oakland has won all 6 Chavez starts. For the season, Chavez has a 1.89 ERA with 41/8 KBB. This includes his most recent outing, a 12-1 Oakland victory vs. Texas. In that game, Chavez worked 7 IP, without allowing a run, on only 1 hit, with an 8/1 KBB. In 9 appearances vs. Seattle, the majority in relief, Chavez has a 0.53 ERA and .180 BAA. With that type of dominance, we choose to convert this to an underdog price on the run line. Note that 14/19 Oakland wins have come by 2 or more runs, while 4/6 of Oakland victories in Chavez starts have come by 2 or more runs. We risk the reward on this call for a reversal of current team form.

Texas Rangers (Ross) at Colorado Rockies (Nicasio) (-115) 8:40 ET

                          4% Colorado (-115)

Playing home field team momentum and pitcher form at a value price with a Colorado team that is 20-14 vs. a Texas team that is 17-15. Talk about Perception/Reality! The Rangers limp in with a recent record of 2-6, scoring 33 runs (14 of those in one game vs. LAA). Following a hot beginning to the season, Ross has faded rapidly. In his most recent 3 starts, Ross is 0-3, lasting just 14 2/3 IP, allowing 19 runs on 24 hits. Colorado has the biggest home/road dichotomy in MLB. The Rockies are 8-9 away, averaging 4.0 RPG with a .254 BA. But at Coors Field, Colorado is 12-5 with a .344 BA, averaging 7.4 RPG. With last night’s 8-2 victory vs. Texas, Colorado has recently won 7/8 vs. the Rangers on this field. The Rockies enter tonight on a 7-2 run, outscoring the opposition 70-39. Nicasio comes off an outstanding start in which he beat the Mets 7-4, working 7 innings, allowing no runs on 3 hits. Pure momentum play at a value price!
