      Diamondbacks Bust Under Streak

The Arizona Diamondbacks (+139, 7.5) used a big ninth inning to end a lengthy Under streak in a 10-2 win over host Pittsburgh. The Diamondbacks racked up seventh runs in the ninth after it appeared they were headed to their seven consecutive Under result.

      California Lows

Expect offense to be at a premium Friday when the San Francisco Giants (-116, 6.5) visit the San Diego Padres in the opener of a three-game series at Petco Park. The teams have combined to go 1-7-1 O/U in their nine meetings this year, a big reason for the Padres' 26-55-4 overall O/U mark.

      Here We Go Again

Cubs hurler Jeff Samardzija is still finding it hard to rack up victories as he prepares to take the hill Saturday against the host Washington Nationals. Samardzija has just two wins on the season despite a 2.83 ERA, and is 0-4 against the moneyline over his last four starts.

      Low, Low Price

Tampa Bay ace David Price has increased his trade value exponentially of late, recording seven straight quality starts while racking up 68 strikeouts against just nine walks over that span. It's no surprise, then, that Price is 1-6 O/U in that stretch entering Sunday's showdown with host Detroit.

      Pitching Notes

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw has been unstoppable of late, allowing just 11 hits over 24 scoreless innings while striking out 36 in his previous three starts. Kershaw carries a six-start winning streak into Friday's encounter with the host Colorado Rockies (+151).

Nights have been kind to Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez - at least, compared to days - as he gets ready to face the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Saturday evening. Jimenez is 3-3 with a 2.53 ERA under the lights compared to 0-5 with a 10.55 ERA during the day.

New York Yankees hurler Hiroki Kuroda looks to preserve his recent string of Unders as he takes the mound Sunday afternoon against the host Minnesota Twins. Kuroda has put together six consecutive Under outings, though he has just one victory to his credit in that stretch.

      Hitting Notes

Houston second baseman Jose Altuve had three hits in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Angels to increase his average to .347. Altuve has just four hits in 18 career at-bats against C.J. Wilson, who starts for Los Angeles (-175, 7.5) on Friday night.

Detroit designated hitter Victor Martinez belted his 21st home run of the season in the Tigers' 8-1 drubbing of Tampa Bay on Thursday. Martinez will face Rays right-hander Chris Archer on Saturday night; Martinez is 1-for-3 in his career against him.

Royals left fielder Alex Gordon went 0-for-4 in Wednesday's win over Minnesota and finds himself in the clutches of a 2-for-32 slump. Gordon may not find much relief Sunday, as he's just 4-for-22 with eight strikeouts against Cleveland probable starter Corey Kluber.

      Totals Streak

San Diego Padres (3-13-1 O/U): With most teams alternating Overs and Unders with at least some regularity, the Padres can be counted upon to provide a reliable source of low totals. The Padres are far and away the class of the league when it comes to the Under, going 26-55-4 to date.

      Injury Notes

New York Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia will visit Dr. James Andrews after an MRI revealed swelling in his injured knee. Sabathia is 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA in eight starts this season; New York is 3-5 S/U and 5-3 O/U in those outings.

Oakland Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson missed his second straight game Thursday with back stiffness. Oakland is 2-1 S/U, 2-1 O/U and +100 units with Donaldson out of the lineup so far this season; he has 18 homers and 61 RBIs on the campaign.

Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez expects to be activated from the disabled list prior to the All-Star break as he continues his recovery from finger surgery. The Rockies are just 10-23 SU, 18-11-4 O/U and a whopping -1,123 units with Gonzalez on the sidelines.

      Weather Watch

Wind at Progressive Field will blow in from right field at 9 mph for Friday's game between host Cleveland (-116, 8) and Kansas City. The Indians were a perfect 4-0 under similar wind conditions in 2013.

      Umpire Note of the Day

Under is 16-5-1 in umpire Angel Hernandez's last 22 home games behind home plate involving the Angels. Hernandez will call the balls and strikes when Los Angeles entertains Houston on Friday.

        _________________________________________________

MLB Betting News and Notes - Week #14
•Red Sox, Lester Ice Cold Vs. O's: In Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester's previous nine starts versus the Baltimore Orioles, the Sox are a paltry 1-8. Lester will try to reverse that trend when he takes the mound against the Orioles at Fenway Park (1:35 PM EST) Friday afternoon. BetOnline.com presently lists the Red Sox as -148 favorites with a total of 8.5.

•Rourk, Nats Cashing In For Under Bettors At Home: In Washington Nationals pitcher Tanner Rourk's last nine home starts, the Under is 7-1-1. Rourk gets the ball when the Nationals host the Chicago Cubs (11:05 AM EST) on Friday. BetOnline.com currently has the Nationals as -158 favorites on the moneyline with an Over/Under of 7.5.

•RHP Aceves Suspended 50 Games: New York Yankees minor league right-handed pitcher Alfredo Aceves received a 50-game suspension after a second positive drug test, the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced Thursday. The league said the suspension without pay is in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and effective immediately. Aceves is currently on the roster of Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre of the International League. He tossed 19 2/3 innings in the majors this season, posting a 6.52 ERA.

•Yangervis Solarte Sent To Triple-A: Rookie Yangervis Solarte, who was an early-season sensation for the New York Yankees, has been sent down to Triple-A Scranton, the team announced Thursday. Solarte, a non-roster invitee, seemingly came out of nowhere during spring training to beat out Eduardo Nunez for the 25th spot on the team. He then won the third-base job over Kelly Johnson, hitting .299 with six homers and 29 RBIs over the first two months of the season when he was arguably the Yankees' best offensive player. Since June began, Solarte's hit just .162 in 22 games. He will be replaced by Zelous Wheeler, a right-handed hitting utility infielder who was hitting .299 at Triple-A. The Yankees designated for assignment infielder Dean Anna to make room for Wheeler on the 40-man roster.

•Strange Challenge: The Toronto Blue Jays used a replay challenge to have their own runner called out in order to score a run Thursday. Toronto loaded the bases with one out in the second inning against the Oakland Athletics. Anthony Gose hit a grounder to first baseman Nate Freiman. Freiman appeared to tag Munenori Kawasaki as he ran for second base, but umpire Vic Carapazza ruled Freiman missed the tag and Kawasaki was safe. Freiman threw to catcher Stephen Vogt, who stepped on home plate for a forceout with Edwin Encarnacion, the runner on third, approaching. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons argued that Kawasaki was out and that Encarnacion should be allowed to score because there would have been no force play at the plate. After a delay of 4 minutes, 27 seconds, the call was overturned and the Blue Jays were given a run. The A’s played the remainder of the game under protest, but that was moot because they won 4-1.

•A’S To Stay At Coliseum: The Oakland Athletics have finalized an agreement on a 10-year extension to play at the Coliseum through the 2024 season. The deal was approved by the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority. The deal still needs to be formally approved by the Oakland City Council and Alameda County Board of Supervisors later this month. The deal settles all outstanding issues between the two sides, including a dispute of past rent owed by the A’s. The A’s will spend more than $10 million on a new scoreboard and the Coliseum Authority will pay for any structural improvements that will be in place by opening day 2015. The rundown Coliseum has had multiple sewage problems in the past year and an outage affecting the outfield lights on June 14.

•Cardinals Send Giants to 17th Loss in 22 Games: Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer, Carlos Martinez earned his second win as a starter, and the visiting St. Louis Cardinals beat the reeling San Francisco Giants, 7-2, on Thursday. Martinez also drove in a run for the Cardinals, who won their second straight after losing three in a row. Martinez allowed a run and five hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out six. Madison Bumgarner fell to 0-3 over his past four home starts, allowing five runs — four earned — and six hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out six. Bumgarner also drove in a run for the Giants, who have lost 17 of 22 and fallen out of first place in the National League West.

                      River City Sharps

We think the linesmakers are trying to sucker everyone into an easy Detroit play, but we're going to look the other way (which often works well) and back Cobb (3-6, 4.20) and the Rays tonight in Detroit against Smyly (4-7, 3.57) and the Tigers. Cobb has pitched really well vs. the Tigers in posting an 0-1 mark with a 2.41 ERA. Smyly really was hit hard in his last start vs. the Astros. While the Tigers got game one of this series on Thursday, the rays are currently getting some things together and are 6-2 on their current road trip. One trend line to consider here...the Tigers are 2-9 in Smyly's last 11 starts vs. team with a losing record. We think a smaller position with the road dog is more than advisable here. The Sharps say...

                      2 UNITS - TAMPA BAY RAYS +105

                          MLB

LAS VEGAS -- Happy Independence Day from all of us here at The Linemakers and thank you for visiting us on a day when so much is going on. Outside the 24-hour city of Las Vegas, most people have the day off and have stacked their itinerary around barbeques and gatherings with friends and family that usually end with some kind of fireworks celebration. And in many places around America, the best places to view those fireworks are at minor league and major league ballparks.

Baseball is about as American as anything we have to offer the world, so it's all too fitting that on the day we annually flaunt our patriotism with the most unity that we also get an intense schedule offering from baseball. There won't be a moment throughout the day's celebration that a game can't be on in the background, which also brings us to another great pastime -- gambling.

The games begin with Cubs-Nationals from our nation's capital at 11:05 a.m. ET and ending with the Astros-Angels from Anaheim at 9:05. In between, there are layers of start times that give bettors roughly four quarters of action throughout the day. That helps them structure their parlays and straight bets in a way that allows for a big day -- or else have a fall back plan if things start out slow. In that case, they still have a "get back" opportunity in the same manner like Monday Night Football acts for a week of games during football season.

To get the day of MLB wagering started, first identify a few of the possible sides that look attractive. Check out all the streaks going on in the game. There are currently seven teams that have winning streaks of three games or more (Orioles, Tigers, Mariners, Braves, Nationals, Cubs and Padres) and seven teams that have lost three or more (Red Sox, Rangers, Astros, Mets, Brewers, Reds, Rockies) heading into today's games.

The first game of the day has two of those streaking teams with Washington riding a five-game win streak against the Cubs, who have won three straight. The Nationals, behind Tanner Roark at -158, might be priced a little too high against Jason Hammel, who has allowed only two runs in each of his last two starts. It's either Cubs or no play, and stay away from the run-line on Washington if looking to get greedy with the favorite.

At Boston today -- one of the best places to celebrate the Fourth with the Freedom Trail, Paul Revere, Sam Adams and the Boston Pops -- the Red Sox are riding a three-game losing streak against the Orioles, who have won three straight. Jon Lester is a -155 favorite against Miguel Gonzalez. Lester started his career with a 14-0 record against Baltimore, but has gone 1-4 in his last nine starts against them, including a loss on March 31. Gonzalez, meanwhile, has won all three of his career starts against Boston. It's either Baltimore or a pass here.

In San Diego this afternoon, the Padres will try for a season-high fifth straight win, while the Giants are reeling in the midst of a 5-17 stretch. Matt Cain is a -115 favorite here and comes off his best outing of the season, but the Giants have still lost his last four starts. On the other side is Eric Stults, who has pitched well of late, but has lost his last six starts. Brandon Belt returns to the Giants lineup, but it's still not enough to pick the Giants. It's either the Padres or nothing, with maybe a look at UNDER 7 runs.

Cincinnati and Milwaukee have each lost three straight heading into tonight's big NL Central meeting, but Alfredo Simon at -118 is what makes the difference here. All the guy does is win and he's rewarded bettors more than any pitcher this season with +11.2 units of profit as the Reds have gone 13-3 behind him. Cincy has won six straight behind Simon and he allowed only one run in each of his last two. The play is on the Reds to keep it going behind Simon.

Ervin Santana had been struggling for Atlanta until his last outing broke a three-start losing streak. He's -145 tonight against the visiting Diamondbacks and Josh Collmentor, who has won his in last three appearances. Arizona ended a three-game losing streak last night at Pittsburgh, but have lost nine of their last 10 in Atlanta. The big key here -- beyond the starters -- is the Braves playing their best ball of the season as they're riding a seven-game win streak. Meanwhile, the Nationals have been matching them win-for-win the last six days. A case can be made for Arizona, but the Braves lineup has been producing too well to go against here.

TAMPA BAY RAYS +120 over Detroit

Both of these teams have been red hot with Detroit having won 8 of their last 10 and the Rays winning 7 of their last 9. We think the difference tonight will be Tampa hurler Alex Cobb who has been inconsistent but has outstanding stuff. His biggest problem has been lack of run support but with the Rays finally finding their bats over the last two weeks and Cobb sporting a 2.41 career ERA vs Detroit, we expect the Rays to roll.
