McAllister set to rejoin Indians' rotation
    By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

CLEVELAND -- A new face is ready to join the Cleveland Indians' frequently altered rotation.

It qualifies as an old face, too.

Right-hander Zach McAllister will be recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Saturday, and he will start that day against the Chicago White Sox. He is taking the place of right-hander Justin Masterson, who landed on the disabled list Tuesday due to an inflamed right knee.

McAllister started the season in Cleveland's rotation, but after he went 3-4 with a 5.89 ERA in 10 starts, he was placed on the disabled list with a lower back strain. When he was healthy again, he was optioned to Columbus, where he pitched so well he has earned a return to the major league club and a spot back in the rotation. In six starts at Columbus, McAllister went 5-0 with a 2.23 ERA.

The two candidates to replace Masterson in the rotation were right-hander Danny Salazar and McAllister. Salazar is also at Columbus, where he is apparently pitching better than his numbers. In eight starts with in Triple-A, Salazar is 3-5 with a 4.93 ERA, but Cleveland manager Terry Francona said the reports from Columbus are that Salazar's last two starts were outstanding.

Although he got bypassed for this opening in the major league rotation, Salazar likely will be back on the big league club before the end of the month. The Indians have a doubleheader scheduled for July 19 in Detroit. They will need an extra pitcher that day, and Francona indicated that it probably would be Salazar.

Hendricks the latest Cubs pitching prospect to arrive
      By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

CINCINNATI -- When Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel were traded to Oakland, it created a buzz among the Chicago Cubs' minor-league pitchers.

Right-hander Kyle Hendricks, who arrived at Great American Ball Park on Wednesday, the day before his scheduled major league debut, said his teammates at Triple-A Iowa were energized by the news.

"As players, we talked about who's going to go up, what's going to happen," he said. "It says something about the guys we have down there that any of them could come up and fill the spot. I hope they're giving me a real opportunity. That's what you want."

Hendricks went 10-5 with a 3.59 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 102 2/3 innings. His success this season has been bolstered by the improvement in his four-seam fastball, which has become a go-to pitch.

"I usually throw mostly two-seam," he said. "I've been using my four-seam with more velocity to both sides of the plate. It's been a real key for me."

Hendricks said he'll have 15 friends and family members in attendance Thursday for his first start.

Chicago's youth movement is well under way, with No. 7 prospect Arismendy Alcantara making his debut and right-hander Dallas Beeler making his second start Wednesday.

"We all know that those young guys are there," manager Rich Renteria said. "Any time there (are) the beginnings of change it sends a ripple effect throughout the minor league system. For them, it opens up opportunities. They still have to go out and perform."

Game of the Day: Pirates at Cardinals

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals (-117, 8)

The St. Louis Cardinals look to complete a sweep when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of their four-game series on Thursday. St. Louis opened the set with a pair of walk-off victories before posting a 5-2 triumph on Wednesday. Matt Adams collected three hits and two RBIs while Kolten Wong added a solo homer a day after belting the winning blast in the ninth inning.

The news was not all good for the Cardinals as All-Star catcher Yadier Molina suffered a sprained right thumb while sliding into third base in the second inning and exited the game in the following frame. Neil Walker recorded two of his team's six hits, including a solo homer as Pittsburgh suffered its fourth straight road loss. The Pirates, who are 2-for-25 with runners in scoring position over the first three games of the series, are 5-7 overall against the Cardinals this season and 1-5 in St. Louis.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

LINE HISTORY: The Cardinals opened as -122 faves and now sit -117. The total has held at the opening number of 8.

POWER RANKINGS: Pirates (-158), Cardinals (-174)

INJURY REPORT: Cardinals: C Yadier Molina (Questionable, thumb)

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "Central Division rivals take the field today in St. Louis as the Cardinals host the Pirates. Both teams are battling to get into the wild card race and catch the Brewers for the Central Division lead. The Cardinals send Shelby Miller to the mound to try and complete the four-game sweep of the Pirates. Shelby is 0-2 with a ERA of 7.32 in his last 4 starts. With all-star catcher Yadier Molina questionable tonight the Cardinals are a -120 favorite, while we are dealing even odds on the Pirates on the money line and they are seeing 58 percent of the action. On the 1.5 run line all the action is on the Cardinals to cover the spread. The 8 run total is seeing 76 percent of the action on the over, as the last two games have combined for 16 runs." Michael Stewart.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Edinson Volquez (7-6, 3.88 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Shelby Miller (7-7, 4.15)

Volquez posted his third straight victory on Saturday, limiting Philadelphia to one run and four hits over seven innings. The 31-year-old Dominican has allowed a total of two runs in 21 frames during his winning streak and has held the opposition to fewer than two runs in four of his last five outings. Volquez has not fared well against St. Louis, going 3-6 with a 5.58 ERA in 13 career starts.

Miller escaped with a no-decision against Miami on Saturday, when his winless streak reached five starts after yielding three runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old is 1-5 over his last nine outings, with the victory being a shutout at Toronto on June 7. Miller lost his first five career starts against the Pirates before posting victories at home on April 25 and in Pittsburgh on May 11.

        TRENDS:

        * Pirates are 0-4 in the last four meetings.
        * Cardinals are 5-0 in their last five vs. National League Central.
        * Cardinals are 1-4 in Miller's last five home starts.
        * Over is 18-7-3 in the last 28 meetings in St. Louis.

CONSENSUS: 56.42 percent of wagers are on the Cardinals.

                  15* San Francisco Giants +112

This game features the 57-34 Oakland at the 50-41 Giants. Giants are in a free fall but had a much needed win yesterday. Motivational advantage for the Giants here as they need this win far more then Oakland does. 66% of the public backing the road Oakland here has really pushed this line up I'm still liking the Giants for a 15* play
