Blue Jays expecting big bats in lineup this week
          Andrew Caley

The Toronto Blue Jays lineup will get a boost this week when Adam Lind and Edwin Encarnacion returning to action.

Lind, who is expected to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday, has been out since July 11 with a foot injury. He was betting .320 with a .389 on base percentage, along with four homers and 27 RBIs.

Encarnacion is headed to AAA Buffalo to finish off his rehab stint and is expected to return Friday against the Chicago White Sox. Encarnacion, the player of the month for May, has been sidelined since July 5 with a strained quadriceps. He was batting .277 with 26 home runs and 70 RBIs.

Preview: Red Sox (52-65) at Reds (59-59)

            Game: 2
            Venue: Great American Ball Park
            Date: August 13, 2014 12:35 PM EDT

It didn't take long for Yoenis Cespedes to make a powerful impression on the Boston Red Sox.

After hitting game-winning homers in back-to-back games, Cespedes will try to help the Red Sox sweep this two-game set from the sputtering Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.

Boston (53-65) is at the bottom of the AL East, and building toward 2015 with Cespedes as a cornerstone.

The left fielder has reached base in all nine games since being acquired in the Jon Lester deal with Oakland before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. He's batting .263 with seven RBIs and as many runs over that stretch, but has been particularly clutch in the past two games.

Cespedes hit his first homer for the Red Sox on Sunday, connecting for a three-run shot in the eighth inning of a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels. He followed that up with a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth of Tuesday's 3-2 win at Cincinnati, giving Boston back-to-back wins for the first time since a five-game streak from July 13-21.

His latest homer came one pitch after Reds reliever Jonathan Broxton forced him to duck out of the way with a fastball high and inside.

"A lot of times when pitchers throw high and tight, they think the batter backs off and gets flustered," Cespedes said through a translator. "That's not how I am. I get more focused."

The Red Sox, 8-1 all-time against Cincinnati (60-59) in interleague play, may be getting another glimpse of the future with Anthony Ranaudo starting in place of fellow rookie Brandon Workman, who is being skipped after going 0-6 with a 6.35 ERA over his last six games - five starts.

"We felt like he could use some extended rest," manager Jon Farrell told MLB's official website.

Ranaudo's impressive major league debut in a 4-3 win over the New York Yankees on Aug. 1 likely gave Farrell some confidence in his decision. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed two runs and four hits with four walks in six innings.

"I feel a lot more prepared now going out there and a lot more confident that I can just focus on the game and focus on pitch-to-pitch adjustments and executing pitches," Ranaudo said.

He went 13-4 with a 2.58 ERA in 22 starts for Triple-A Pawtucket this year, and he's facing a Cincinnati team that's hitting .213 while dropping three of four games.

Devin Mesoraco, however, is 7 for 14 with three doubles, two homers and eight RBIs in that span.

Mike Leake (9-10, 3.42 ERA) gets the ball after Homer Bailey's scheduled start was pushed back to Saturday at Colorado due to a sore elbow. Leake has won two of his last three starts, compiling a 1.31 ERA and a .176 opponents' batting average with 20 strikeouts in 20 2-3 innings.

The right-hander could've used some help from his offense Friday, when he allowed two runs and struck out seven over seven innings in a 2-1 loss to Miami.

The bullpen let Leake down in his only career meeting with the Red Sox on May 7. He allowed two runs and left with the lead after the seventh before two relievers gave up two runs in a 4-3 loss at Boston.

Leake has a 2.24 ERA over his last nine interleague starts, but he only has a 2-2 record to show for it since he's been backed by three runs or fewer in six of those outings.

Mets' pitching staff takes two more hits
              By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

NEW YORK -- No baseball team needs to be told about the fragility of pitchers. Unfortunately for the New York Mets, they received two more reminders last week.

Right-hander Jacob deGrom, who surged into the National League Rookie of the Year race by winning six of nine starts between June 21 and Aug. 7, came down with a sore shoulder after his Thursday start against the Washington Nationals. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday.

Fellow right-hander Jeremy Hefner's recovery from Tommy John surgery hit an unexpected road block Aug. 6, when he was pulled from a rehab start due to a sore forearm. Hefner was diagnosed with another tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow as well as a stress fracture. He is expected to undergo another Tommy John surgery.

"The doctors say there's no amount of innings, there's no amount of throws when all of a sudden something's going to happen," Mets manager Terry Collins said Tuesday afternoon. "No matter how hard you try to protect a guy from injury, if they're going to go down, they're going to go down. That's why you've got to have pitching in reserve."

The one thing the Mets have in abundance is young starting pitching. And while many believe the Mets should improve their anemic offense by trading homegrown hurlers such as Rafael Montero -- who took deGrom's place on the roster and in the rotation and absorbed the loss Tuesday by giving up five runs over five innings as New York fell 7-1 to Washington -- Collins cautioned Tuesday that trading pitching may cause more problems than it solves.

"There's a lot of talk about dumping our young pitching," Collins said. "Well, you better have some pitching down the road. Because when it starts breaking down and it's all gone, we're going to regret it."

                    Hondo

Hondo’s three-’dog night started with a “W” with the Fish Monday, but the fun ended there as losses with the Royals and Giants caused the debt to grow to 1,530 alstons.

Wednesday night: Mr. Aitch is counting on Hyun-Jin to provide some tonic in Atlanta — 10 units on the Dodgers.

                              'Pitching Mismatch'

The closing matchup of a mini two game inter-league series between Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies is Wednesday's baseball betting focus. According to the current betting odds, Los Angeles Angels are -$2.10 home favorite. That whopping nod by the oddsmaker is due to the overall success LAA has had vs Philadelphia (8-1) and to a greater extent the success of the Angel starter and slump of Philadelphia's hurler. The Angels send the team’s ace, Jered Weaver, to the mound. The right-hander hitting a rough spot the past three going 1-1 with a 6.35 ERA remains a solid 12-7 on the year with a 3.68 ERA. Despite the recent setbacks, Halos have won eight of Weaver's last ten starts, nine of his last twelve at Angel Stadium. On the other mound, the Philadelphia counters with A.J. Burnett. Over his last three, the righty is 0-3 with a whopping 9.23 ERA bringing the season mark to 6-12 with a 4.29 ERA. Phillies have dropped eight of Burnett's last nine trips to the mound. Backing a hefty favorite is always a risky proposition. So, the best choice is a Run Line -1.5, -$1.10.
